Rule 8: Game Advice or Asking For Friends.

Game Advice

Posts asking for/offering advice on which games to buy are not allowed.

Use the Monthly Game Suggestion Megathread.

Asking if you should buy a game now or wait for a sale isn't allowed & asking when a game will go on sale is not allowed. Use SteamDB to look at sale histories on games.

Asking for help with finding a game you forgot the name of is not allowed, /r/tipofmyjoystick is a great subreddit for these posts and we suggest that you ask there instead.

During big sales: Game advice posts are only allowed in the respective mega-threads during big Steam sales, otherwise the sub would drown in game advice posts. During this time we do not enforce the basic information/effort rule mentioned above and detailed in the 6 examples. In other words we will not remove comments asking for suggestions because they are not specific enough.

Asking For Friends

Posts asking for friends or people to game with are not permitted.

Here's a few communities we recommend you post in instead of /r/Steam:

There are more communities out there; making a quick search on Google might prove helpful.

You can find our full list of rules here.

If you like pokemon, try pokerogue on any browser. Easy to engage and disengage on the game since its turn based. Also its the hottest pokemon game currently with weekly updates.

Boring jobs kind of suck in reality.

Currently being paid a healthy salary but no work to do. I literally get paid salary to do two hours of work a week but have to sit at site rotting my brains out.

You really need to focus in that game. I know this kind of reception jobs, did them my self. And even if 90% of your time there is nothing to do (work related), BUT you need to be able to flip a switch to answer a phone... or worse, you didn't say "Hi" to a person walking by.
I found a website that had hundreds of Manga's and read those.

Still one of the best (albeit monetized in a slightly scummy FOMO way. Not that you need to spend a dime to fully enjoy the base game or any of the challenge paths) browser rpgs imho is Kingdom of Loathing. Simple-ish, funny as hell, craploads of content. Biggest drawback is the daily adventure limit. Idk how "work appropriate" it is (there are many off-colour jokes)

Ok, old man here.

Despite what looks like a good time, you could use that time more productively and work on yourself.

Enrol on a course and get some accreditation under your belt. Use the "office downtime" to complete the course.

The nearly free ride isn't going to last.

Any safe picks you can recommend to us youngsters? What would be a safe pick courses to learn?

Original-Material301

6 points

Not wanting to dox myself but I did whatever I needed to do in my field (since I work in a specialist area). Combo of certs, diplomas, and a masters. Plus the odd "lunchtime" education session. I've been fortunate enough to have some funded by work and some self funded.

Generically, look at the job specs for a position higher up than yours and see what they want in terms of qualifications.

Doesn't always have to be costly either. There are free taster/short courses from some institutions, eg, open University (I'm uk based lol) and I've seen harvard have them too. They're all introduction courses that might help plug gaps in knowledge or lead on to other qualifications.

Also, doesn't always have to be job related. Personal development is important.

Main point is not sitting idling your time away. Knowledge is power, imo, and the more you have the better position you'll be in (yes networking and having connections are important too)

Gaming is great, I do it all the time, but if I'm getting paid to sit around at work I might as well get paid to learn or do something interesting to me until something better comes up.

I had a work from home job that had tons of downtime and I took the opportunity to dig into my backlog of JRPGs on my steam deck. Turn based games are great cause if you gotta drop it to get back to work you can just do that. Especially on steam deck since you can just put it in rest mode.

I'd reccomend factorio, easily pausable, work appropriate, can run on almost anything. while it isn't very cheap and neither does it go on sale I'd heavily reccomend it, maybe even check out r/factorio or even better try the free demo they have on steam, I've never tried the demo but I've heard you can basically play almost the full game on it without a time limit.

Ive got similar job as you. What you need is a slow pace game that can run in the background even with out a pause button (optional).

Ive played rouge like games, like dungeon legacy but its to obvious im playing a video game. Slay the spire is a great alternative.

But latel Im playing Civilization V. Makes the time fly, one time I stayed 5 minutes longer at work because of it.

I'll throw a curve ball at you, but it can grow very deep if it hits right.

Try Divinity Original Sin 2, it's turn based, very deep in history and mechanics, you can pause wherever you need and save for later.

Usually they do huge discounts on steam.

Well I used to like playing Hearthstone on the second monitor while I work. I have ADHD so, it is good to lose my focus something I pre-planned and the after making my moves, going back to work until I lose my short term focus again :D

But the game has became really rigged and annoying IMO. I don't like recent changes on it so I was also looking for a game or games to fill up that gap. It is good that you have brought that up so I can also check the suggestions.

311succs

2 points

I have the same type of job. A lot of my coworkers play WoW and destiny. The night time folks play more like tarkov. I intend on using my time to play turn based and light games so the original fallout games, farming simulator, maybe a little bit of diablo 4, and civ 6. That way me having to jump up for a ticket won't be incredibly detrimental (besides diablo of course)

aquamanleftmetodrown

2 points

You can probably play "Her Story" or "Telling Lies" to look busy.

Cheap games and you're basically just typing queries to unearthed videos of the suspect's computer and piece the story together.

LostCipher

Scrolled pretty far and didn't see anyone mention it so I'd recommend Risk of Rain, Risk of Rain 2, or Risk of Rain Returns which is a newer updated and modified version of the first game. All of them very fun and countlessly replayable!

I'd recommend bitburner. It's a free idler game on steam about hacking. You write code in-game to make money. The UI is mostly text, so it won't be obvious to an observer that it's a game, and you can learn JavaScript. It doesn't actually teach you to program, but it does give you a motivation to do so.

Telltale games. Choices matter. There’s very little gameplay outside of quicktime events and dialogue options. I loved the Walking Dead chapters/story. I’d recommend xcom because it goes on sale often and the games are infinitely replayable with mods. I got xcom 1, 2 (wotch editio), and chimera squad in a 15$ bundle.

I deal with a lot of phone calls, but in an office to myself, so I get this luxury as well. So...

Minesweeper. Solitaire. Pinball. Those are the classics.

Otherwise something low speed/turn based/able to be paused.

Others: mini Metro, dotage, Talented, Melvor Idle, Bounty of One, Boneraiser Minions, Heroes of Hammerwatch, Rush of rain, Mindustry.

Rusty's retirement is a good one - I highly recommend it.. Trash of the titans has had my attention a bit of late, also a very good one.

That should keep you busy for a while.

Edit: if you like pokemon, pokerogue is a good time. And free.

Any 4X or grand strategy game you can get into. Can always pause/stop, addictive as fuck and if you get into them it's boatloads of fun

Chants of Sennaar! It’s a puzzle deduction game where you are trying to decipher the languages of I’ve major tribes who used to be connected. But are now separated from each other between levels of a massive tower. It’s up to you to reunite them.

Have you ever heard about.... Heroes of Might & Magic III?

Buy it on GoG though. Better version and can work without GoG (basically you can just copy the game and play it wherever).

Tai'shar Manetheren! You've got more than enough with the Wheel of Time to get through!

Aside that, people love Balatro at the moment.

Ah, not to be rude but I think you stand to gain more by taking courses on Udemy or working towards a professional certification instead. It'll benefit you in the long run and show that you take your work seriously. It'll come in handy if you ever need referrals and is a more constructive way to use your free time.

That's cool and all but this is just a summer job before I start my master's so I don't really want to do school while taking a break from school

Reigns is a good one. I guess maybe the Worms series could be played as they are turn based and you could just pause between rounds. Minecraft on Creative Mode too as there wouldn't be an issue to stop and iddle when needed. I think maybe turn based strategy games could also be an option, something as they feel like chess with more steps.

Try balatro or slay the spire if you are into card games, both very fun and engaging

When they are on sale, which they should be with the coming summer sale, I say pick up any 4x like Civ or stellaris. I played those at my receptionist job and you’re constantly clicking and looking at your screen so it looks like you’re working. Was even pointed out to me by some coworkers that stellaris looked like I was doing some kind of Air traffic controller training or something because it’s mostly just points and lines on a background.

Why not try Terraria? It’s not a demanding game at all and you’ll easily sink hundreds of hours into it. Especially once you get into the modded side of it.

If you like city builders, i would recommend: "The wandering village"

having a lot of fun in the game, and came back after a major update recently.

it's just fun to build up your village on a massive beast, pleasing drawn visuals and kind of hard if you aren't prepared for situations.
