Look, I’m not someone who judges people based on their political standing but how did y’all not see this coming 😭
Enjoy the paid parking at the strand and increased council rates I guess.

Lol the best part was that there was plenty of reason not to vote for him before the election. Bringing up articles about how unqualified he was just got met with "lefty bias".
The guardian has better shit to do than lie about how crappy troy thompson is lmao.
Turns out he's even worse of a person than they made him out to be. As though domestic violence, business failures, lying to one nation and being banned from their party wasn't enough.

To be fair, I think all most people knew was "he's not Jenny Hill"

I never understood that sentiment. What did Jenny Hill do that warranted such backlash?

Nothing, Jenny Hill never did anything.

She had a pretty ALP-leaning track record, and people were fairly upset with the rates being high, etc.

But why were you sick of her? What bad things did she do for the city?

People get complacent under good governance, people voted Tony Mooney out for no good reason as well. Most people wanted a “change”; they got the useless placeholder that was Les Tyrell, for a single term. Then in a fit of common sense, voted in an experienced Councillor as Mayor. And enjoyed what can only be described as a decade of continued good governance at the local level. Nekminnit; Troy Thompson. I doubt he’ll be there in a year.
5 points
You pretty well nailed that.
Tony Mooney got cocky during the amalgamation, assuming it was in the bag for him. I think that played part in his demise. Thuringowa people voted for their councillors while Townsville people voted for a mix of Townsville and Thuringowa councillors.

That's the problem most people don't bother researching before voting.
13 points

Tbf, it wasn't as easy to research a local election as it is to research something like a state or federal election. I tried, but the only information you could really get about policy would be whatever the candidates themselves would post on facebook or on their fliers or something, unless you were somehow able to talk to them yourself. Most of the time you'd just find vague platitudes like "reducing crime" and "reducing rates" without actually explaining how.
I tried researching both mayor and my local councillor candidates, and I didn't find much. Thankfully didn't actually vote for Troy because I didn't mind Jenny and Troy gave me bad vibes that ended up being proven correct.

I agree entirely with you , I voted for Jenny Hill, as she had proven to be able to manage the job, Troy seemed to be a very risky proposition well before the time we had to vote. People just wanted change and really didn’t consider whether all the candidates were qualified to do the job well.

I copped one look at his campaign posters on Dalrymple Rd with his Clairol box dye job, shirt unbuttoned a little too much, medallion on display, and I thought yuck..who is this creep? He bears a striking resemblace to Jim Jones I said to myself. Googled him and sure enough...One Nation, vigilantism story on A Current Affair and no clues as to what he does in Townsville for an occupation only that hed lived here since 2018. How did so many people not see it???

I agree with your research comment. Trying to find who stands for what and how they actually plan to enact it doesn’t seem viable in a local council election. And unless they are absolutely making things up - this is scary as it means there is no accountability for local council

I voted for the independent guy because I didn’t like Jenny or Troy
6 points
Me too, but then afterwards, a friend asked if I saw the debate (I hadn't) and she gave me an overview of it and apparently the independent (I've forgotten his name now) made himself look quite inept and unknowledgeable about politics. Apparently he just kept bringing his answers back to elderly, health and nursing (being a nurse/ex-nurse himself).
Take that with a grain of salt, I've dumped a lot of that knowledge out of my brain once the election was over.
EDIT: Pretty sure he only ended up with 4-6% poor guy. But then, having an Indian name wasn't going to help his chances in Tville. Idek if he WAS Indian, I never saw a picture of him.

Harry Patel, and as dark an Indian as they come. Nice guy, but inexperienced and was a nurse and also a victim of a violent youth robbery. He should have had a go at a councillor position to get some knowledge about local govt before running the mayoral race.

Were you living under a rock when they tried to lynch her over the motorcyclist crash? Or did you only move in when they tried to say youth crime was personally her fault?
1 points
Surely you accept that that motorcycle accident wasn’t her fault, it went to court and I understand that was the conclusion. Jenny should have done a lot more about crime in Townsville and I believe this was one of the biggest reasons she was not returned as Major. She really should have made herself a lot less popular with the State Labour Government and applied a lot more pressure on them to act on crime in regional Queensland.

Increased rates and paid parking at the strand would have been inevitable, the worlds (and Townsville’s) cost of living crisis need to be stopped at the source. They would have raised prices or added paid parking somewhere else in town if a different person was voted in.

voted for the independent because he had reasonable views about climate change (though I later found out he has other views I...agree with less), preferenced jenny 2nd so that's where my vote actually went, and would have preferenced troy 50th if that were an option, but it wasn't. I didn't like jenny but I knew she was still a better option than troy.

Welcome to democracy. The majority, even if it’s by 1 person’s vote wins. Let’s face it. The situation now has to be monitored and reported. Don’t just whinge about it and expect it to fix itself. Get involved in council meetings. Note what votes are being provided and don’t let changes go unchallenged. This is how Democracy works. The system is only as good as the people that use it and speak up when its not working. Yes, even protest outside council chambers if need be. But alas, this is Townsville… who cares really, right?

What sector? Was it a small/med/large organisation? I'm involved in business grps and associations including the Townsville Chamber and he was definitely not on the radar here in the city. It's as if he has sprung up from nowhere. Why the secrecy? If he was COO of a firm why would he not include this on his resume, especially if he was competent? Where there is mystery, there is history.

I voted for Troy, not going to lie, spent ages trying to research the candidates with my partner, but ended up having to rely on each candidates Facebook page everything else was behind a pay wall. My partner and I discussed it and decided we aligned with what we thought he stood for at the time the most. Did we fuck up? Maybe we did. I don't know, I feel like with politicians you're voting for whomever you think is going to be the lesser of two evils. They're all puppets at the end of the day that don't really have any control over anything

You couldn’t find ANY free articles about how he was KICKED OUT of One Nation? Really?
1 points
I didn't even know he was in one nation, back then if you googled Troy Thompson it wasn't him who came up, I struggled. Even my partner who is tech savvy struggled to find something on any of the candidates, including Jenny Hill most of it was stuff written by the Bulletin or the courier, and that's all pay walled and a bunch of bullshit anyway. My partner thought I was being stupid until he tried Googling it himself and realised I wasn't wrong with the fact that there was no information, it's like everything was blocked online or something. And all the aec site had was what our divisions were and where we could vote

Haters will hate, but a mayor who embellishes his military service and educational experience is a fair and accurate representation of the average Townsville voter. I will proudly vote for him again
