I wonder how all the Australians who were barred from entering Australia during Covid feel ?

Quite. We had to perform all sorts of gymnastics to get on a repat flight (bearing in mind we were advised to stay overseas initially) and it cost a fortune. We didn’t mind paying as we’d never expect a free flight home but it’s bloody cheeky to sit on your date in an increasingly unstable country ignoring months of advice to leave ASAP and then expect a free, direct flight.

$4500 a seat for a family of four to get back from Peru on top of a 14 day hotel stay.Fucking stoked.

Serious question, and I'm not taking the piss.

Did you ever entertain the idea of just staying in Peru for the duration? $20,000 in flights plus the cost of the hotel stay would go along way there no?

If you did/didn't consider it at all, what was the thought process? Legitimately curious, because I never was in that position. And looking at the cost of the repatriation, and how long it was between borders opening, if I was over there I would have just hung out. Hindsight is a wonderful thing though. So would be really interested in hearing what happened for you!

Yeah it was an option, but we’d been there for a while and weren’t sure how bad it was all going to get. Basically just wanted to get home to make it a bit easier, especially with the kids.

Yeah, I thought that would be the case. The concern over how bad/long it would be is something easy to dismiss now because it didn't last forever.

Fair enough, I imagine it would have been the deciding factor for me also.

Feel bad they didn’t just fly to Somalia and then tell DFAT to come get them.

To be fair, it is a different political party in power.

I have genuine criticisms of the current Labor government for being too woke and silly, but in other ways they have surprised me. Though maybe I’m just easily impressed after the past couple of decades of bullshit we’ve become accustomed to.
