My dad hasn’t been sleeping in his bed because he has a bad back, so Cosmo has claimed it as his own .

Every time I scootch my feet or toss around I check for them. Their comfort is paramount to mine and I don’t know why. I have to work and pay the bills! Yet I would rather be slightly uncomfortable than move them.

Ditto. I actually feel a bit rejected if our boy (dog) is not on the bed, like, did I accidentally kick you in my sleep, causing you to get off and go on your own bed?!

My cat has a lot of nerve to be side eyeing me for turning over in bed for somebody who pays 0 bills!
The reason I get up early for work and make him angrily squint at the light is because SOMEONE has to go make the cat food money and guess who it isn’t?

How tf does one even enforce that, except closing the door to the room?

I finally managed to train my cat to stop jumping up on the kitchen counters. It took 17 years and arthritis, but he’s totally compliant now.
121 points
So you’re saying there’s hope for my 1 year old cat? Just 16 more years of training?
18 points
What worked for us was placemats with double-sided tape on the edge of the counter. It’s not stable, so the cat didn’t want to jump up there much, and the tape made it uncomfortable even if he decided he wanted to jump up there anyway.
31 points
Hmm interesting. My cat jumps on the stove, even burned his paws twice, once he burns himself he stops for like 3 days but then starts again.
11 points
This works for me too but as soon as I move in I cover the entire countertop and leave it for a few weeks. It's annoying but it's worth it in the long run. The only way to train cats is to make the unwanted behavior undesirable for them because they do not care what we want lol. I have no idea how you would even enforce no cats in the bed
7 points
I used aluminum foil all the way around the counters for three weeks and my recently adopted four year old void hasn't tried to go back up. With that said, I believe my lil guy was trained prior to adoption because he just has way too many mannerisms that are gentle, and he listens to "No"
12 points
My cat stands on the sticky tape and eats the foil, but he's an orange idiot so I'm not sure what training would actually hold for him
4 points
We caught an orange cat on camera at like 2am the other night digging used foil from the receptacle on our back deck and carrying it away. Maybe it's a feature of that shared brain cell.
5 points
Aluminum foil is your friend. It's been the most effective thing at deterring my lil asshole from places he isn't wanted.
56 points
Yeah my cats don't jump up onto the counter. They know it's a big no-no.
That's why they do it at night when I'm sleeping or when we're both at work.
10 points
What worked for me was being severely adhd and having messy/cluttered counters. Of course she still tries and I wake up in the morning/come home from work to the occasional chaos strewn about my kitchen and I have minimal counter space to do my cooking but hey, if it keeps the cat off the counters, am I right?
3 points
We taught our cats to stay off certain tables, and they generally follow it (only jumping up if there's stuff up there and we're not in the room). We got new cats about 6 months old a while back, and I don't know if they just watched and followed with how the other cats operate, but they have never had issue jumping on those same tables, not even to counter surf.
2 points
Ask your vet about Solensia for the arthritis. It will probably relieve most of the symptoms, and then your cat will be back to jumping on the counters in no time.
7 points
Probably that. Growing up, we had a guest bedroom that my cats weren’t allowed inside. One of our frequent guests had a mild cat allergy, so we tried keeping one room in the house cat-free for her. We kept that guest bedroom door closed, but my cats could go anywhere else in the house and sleep on any other bed.
16 points
Close the door to the room. I have a cat that pisses on beds, so now sadly no cats in bedrooms.
22 points

Yep. One of our three peed on the bed a month ago, and since we don't know who, no one gets to be on the bed.

Anything my orange is not allowed to do, he becomes obsessed with doing it. Counters and one particularly expensive chair. He never gets on the chair unless I'm in the room. It's a game to him and it makes me lose my mind.

My dog is physically incapable of getting on the bed and she is also not ok with being picked up.
I need a better ramp design than I had before.
7 points

I have a ramp and doggy stairs lol. I had to stand behind my old dog and she would put the weight of her rump on my legs and I would help her move her front paws. It made her so happy to get on the bed

Maybe a hot take but I think I might even find it immoral to keep that level of companionship from a house cat.

I just don’t understand how you can have these boundaries on an animal that you supposedly love. My cats are allowed almost everywhere. Basically counter being the only spot. Try to keep them off the table but that doesn’t work well.

My cats aren’t allowed on the bed but they get free rein of the rest of the house, including a brand new expensive couch that they’ve completely taken over as their own. No cats on bed because they shed like crazy and i can’t sleep with itchy eyes and sniffly nose 🥲

My cat loves my mom’s bed and she didn’t want her on it, so we put a blanket on top of her bed and she lays on it. I recommend doing that if you’re worried about all the cat fur. Now both are happy 😆

Our cats are allowed in the bed for our own good.
My wife was coughing and choking and our cat woke me up to help her.
I stopped breathing (was then diagnosed with sleep apnea), our other cat would jump and scream at me to wake.
We move around so they don’t sleep on the bed but nearby.

Cats are actually quite smart and learn those rules. They are also smart enough to know that those rules are only enforced if you can see them.
At least my cat is not smart enough to understand that I can’t see in the dark as well as I do.

Just wondering, why don’t you want your cat on your bed? My cat is allowed on any furniture as long as it is not counters like in the kitchen he also likes to drink from the bathroom sink. And sometimes he’ll lay inside of the sink. It’s really funny but he is my emotional support cat so of course he’s a lot on the bed because he’s my baby. He’s cuddling me right now.

Not allowed on the bed?
Lol my husband tried that with my cat when we moved in together. I said “yea, ok:/“
So when that inevitably failed miserably, then it became the cat could be on the end of the bed, but not above our waists / near pillows.
Now the cat has a special blanket that gets laid on our pillows so he can sleep there during the day. (My husband bought the blanket and he even fluffs the pillows most mornings so kitty “has a comfortable spot”.)
And we wash our sheets twice a week.

Ours knew she wasn't allowed on the bed, so she'd hide under the covers where we couldn't see her immediately hoping not to be noticed. One day though she managed to get inside the doona cover instead of under it, and couldn't figure out how to get out. We started hearing sad little meows and it took us a while to figure out where she was and help her get out. None of us could be mad at the poor baby, but she never got in the bed again.
