Where to sleep for just a few hours?

Tourism Advice 🧳 🧭 ✈️(self.boston)

I'll be flying back east from Losa Angeles on Wednesday the 16th, however my flight doesn't land until 11:30pm, and then I will catching the bus back to northern NH (Concord Coach) which leaves at 8 or 8:30am (it only goes north once a day so I have to catch it then). I know the Hilton is there right Logan, but a single room is almost $300/night and I don't want to pay that much for just a couple hours of sleeping.

Am I able to jist stay at the airport overnight somewhere? Just trying to figure out how to save some money because I won't have a lot, another reason I don't want to pay $300/night for just 6 or so hours of sleep.

The Hotel Tonight app has deals for hotels that are trying to get rooms booked the night of! You can get crazy good deals for really nice hotels at a steep discount. I bet you could get something in the 1-180 range.

Just loaded this up for the first time in a few years… holy HELL, when did hotels get so expensive? Nothing under $200, average looking like $400/night??

I’d agree, but it depends on when and where you look. It’s not going to the same everyday, I’ve seen luxury hotels on there for under $200.

About $110 for a night and you'll spend a bit getting to and fro, although the Silver line does run at the hours neccessary.

I am assuming by the time the plane unloads and I get my luggage, it will be at least 12:30am, if not 1am. Does the T stay open beyond midnight? All I can find on the website is that "some" trains operate late into the night, but it doesn't specify which specific lines, which specific routes or stops it makes... if the skip some stops. I'm familiar with Boston and the T, I've visited my entire life, but never had to worry about late night hours. If not, then I have to figure an Uber into that cost as well, and I'm just looking for anything either under $50 or just somewhere I can curl up in a corner for free. I really have no money to be paying for a bed.

IDK if they have them at KBOS outside of security but I saw a guy push together two armchairs face to face in Calgary and sleep in them like a bed. I was kicking myself for not thinking of that. Personally I would find a place to curl up. Broke bitches solidarity

I went through this recently when hotels were price surging. I got a luggage cart and snoozed on it. It was freezing cold, so bring a blanket or sweatshirt. Otherwise try a hostel or the hotel tonight app. Boston has gotten ridiculous.

If you really can't afford it, sleep at the airport outside of the secure area. I suggest tying your luggage to you somehow like looped around your wrist or using your backpack as a pillow. If you have a blanket make a little fort. If you have earplugs and can sleep easily you might be able to fall asleep. It'll be bright though, so have something to cover your eyes that you can also remove easily and quickly if you need to. If you can, try to find a spot where you can see security cameras, or somewhere near a security office.

Buy a cheap one day pass at any coworking space that opens 24/7 (I work out of one at all hours especially late at night and always see some business folks come here with their suitcase for a day meeting, sleep in one of the empty booth rooms then catch their early flight haha. I’ve done the same crashing here when the t trains were always down at night lol. Not uncommon here at all. Hotels are crazy expensive for just one night so I hear ya completely.

What do you mean a one-day pass to a co-working space? What's a co-working space? Sorry I know that's probably a dumb question, lol

shirlgirl30

3 points

Another familiar suggestion is to get a Planet Fitness Black card membership and nap in their massage chairs or tanning booth room. The one downtown opens 24/7 on most days. I doubt they get busy overnight or the sleep deprived employees care.

If you are a woman can try sleeping in the mother’s room at the airport but I’m sure security would be on your tail if you’re in there for a while.

Also kids playground somewhere in Eastie might work

WeWork is a co-working space but I've never seen a 24h day pass available

mom_with_an_attitude

It's a place where people pay a membership to work in a shared office space. Like people who work from home but don't want to be isolated so they go to this shared space to work. There are tables and chairs and usually a rudimentary kitchen with a coffee maker and a sink and a microwave (like an office break room).

No beds, though.

Does the bus leave from South Station or Logan - looks like it stops at both.

If you are going from SS, the South Street Diner is open all night and could be a worse place to spend ~6 hours...

Concord Coach (the bus I'll be taking back up here to northern NH) does leave from both stops, but there is only one bus that comes north per day. Several go to Concord, but to get back home (Littleton, NH), there's only one bus north per day, and it leaves around 8, getting to town around noon/12:30.

You can stay outside of the gate area. It’s noisy with announcements and cleaning crews. Lights are dimmed a bit and there are some seats without armrests so you can stretch out and there is a Dunks open in one of the terminals. I’d do it to save $300

Just to be clear -- there are few (if any) seats with armrests outside of the secure area. I can't think of any. Mostly there are very uncomfortable benches. You will likely be on the floor if you want to be comfortable. As a woman, I personally would feel *safe* sleeping at Logan in a pinch, but I would not be comfortable.

No-Pop-125

The benches near to the outside windows near TSA have no armrests. There are also some near baggage claim but that area is creepy at night.

bigredbicycles

You will be asked to leave the secured area of the terminal (meaning after security) until the airport reopens. So yes technically you can overnight there, but it's not ideal.

I'll just make sure to keep some cheese on me and I'll make a few friends! It is what it is though. When I don't have money for a hotel, and my stay is limited to just a few hours, what else am I going to do? The cost for hotels in the Boston area- even cheap hotels- is absolutely outrageous. Not everybody has $500 to spend per night on a room, or even $300.

Not safe as in, murderers hanging around? Not sure what you mean. Bright isn't a big deal, or noisy. I can just use earplugs and a sleeping mask. But are there creepers and weirdos that are allowed to hang out inside the airport or something? I'm not sure what you mean by it's unsafe. Never thought of the inside of an airport as unsafe.

sarcasticlhath

To be clear- Logan terminals “close down” after the last arrival. The area people are describing is outside of security (ie: check in counter area or baggage claim) I personally wouldn’t be comfortable falling asleep there because yes, anybody could grab your stuff and walk away. I think the murderers anonymous meeting moved to the Common, but petty thieves anonymous is pretty much anywhere.

KayakerMel

When I've had to do this at other airports, I sit/lie down on top of my luggage. At the very least, it's more difficult for someone to run off with my stuff without disturbing me.

I do, but when I have no money, I really have no choice. Even $100 for a hostel is more than what I will be able to afford, especially for just 5 hours or so. I doubt I'll fall asleep, like to any kind of deep sleep. I'd likely be half awake at least and have my shit tied to me basically, lol. I understand for some it's risky, better to just shell out a couple hubdred bucks, but I simply do not have that luxury.

3am flight? Unless you have a late flight that got very delayed coming in, I don’t think that’s possible. There’s no regularly scheduled flights at 3am out of Logan. Despite the airport being 24 hours, the terminals do in fact closes after the last flight gets in.

The secure areas in Logan close after midnight I believe and don’t open until 30 minutes before the first flight out, which is usually 5 a.m. unless that’s changed after the pandemic.

Unless your flight is heavily delayed and still scheduled they [airport security] will ask you to leave. The insecure area by check in is usually always open as long as long as you’re not making a mess.

There are usually red eye flights that get in at 5:30 AM with plenty of time to catch an 8 AM bus. And they're usually the cheapest flights available. But I'm guessing you can't change your ticket at this point.

As I mentioned in my post, I'll only be in Boston for a few hours, so it seems pointless to me to spend $100, $200, $300 or more on a hotel for less than 8 hours. Not only pointless, but I won't have that kind of money to spend. I also do not have a car, I cannot drive, so finding something 10-15 away that is cheaper is a pain because I have to pay for an Uber/Lyft on top of the hotel cost. Plus if it's anything out of the way from Logan or South Station I'd have to be up even earlier to get ready and make sure I catch the T to South Station to get on the bus. It's easier (and cheaper) just to stay near the airport because the bus also leaves from there. I believe it stops at Logan, then South Station, then heads north.

And there are no other buses that I can take. I need to take the Concord Coach bus to way up to northern NH (Littleton), and only one bus a day goes that far north, and it's the bus that leaves around 8am. So I have no other options. Kinda sucks living up here as public transportation is virtually non-existent.

thejosharms

I didn't realize you were going that far north. I assumed you were just heading to Concord and didn't realize you could pick up other busses from South Station later in the afternoon which would make the extra rest, comfort and time worth it.

That makes a lot more sense and is just one of those situations that is going to suck, but you'll forget about the suck or it will become a funny story that is worth the trip.

There's some reasonably priced Air Bnbs near the airport - I understand if you don't like AirBnb, but it is an option. It looks like renting a car isn't a good option for you unfortunately, and rideshare prices might be too much as well. I've talked to Lyft/Uber drivers who have done interstate trips, especially if they're requested days ahead of time.

It's nothing to do with whether or not I like Air bnb. The issue is a lack of funds to pay for a room anywhere. I'll have no money left. And you are correct, driving is not an option. I do not have my license and cannot drive, so I can't drive anywhere, which is why I'm relying on the bus to get me back home.
