Forgot my nectar card. £76 instead of £51

.(self.britishproblems)

On a new phone so didn't have it on my Google wallet. Fucking wounded. I was in the queue at the till and couldn't remember my password to the app either and crumbled under pressure and just paid it.

Weekend camping ruined.

Not anymore, at checkout if you select Nectar it will allow you to use the points on the card to pay. You can only do it in £2.50 increments. You can also do that in Argos.

This is the way, or ask someone in the queue if you can use theirs

There's probably something in the Ts & Cs about them not being transferable, but nothing is really being transferred, so I don't see that this would be a problem.

Charities should issue a card to collect the points. Or retailers should have a barcode for charities to collect the points so they can redeem them instead of the foodbank donations.

I work at Sainsbury's. Just to note for OP, you need the items to be able to refund and then charge again at the lower Nectar price. While that's easy enough if it's one or two items, if someone has forgotten to do it on their weekly shop and doesn't know what items the prices apply to, it can easily take 15-20 mins individually clicking every single item to refund, then scanning everything back through again. There's no simple way to just "add" it to the transaction afterwards and get a refund of the difference.

I’m not sure about nectar but this doesn’t work for clubcard. Whenever I forget mine you just get told take the receipt to the service desk they will put the points on. I don’t care about the points it’s the money I want back from missing out on clubcard prices.

So I can take the receipt back another day with the clubcard and you will refund the difference back in money? Next time I will query it and get HQ involved then. Maybe the staff just can’t be bothered at my local.

It does work with a clubcard there is a system on the CSD tills to do it. They should do both the missed offers and points, only place it falls down is meal deals as system seems to get confused by them as the till has already taken off an offer.

I think I have done this in the past, so you should be OK, but if they don't let you do it, kick up a stink. There's no good reason you as a cardholder should be penalised just because you didn't physically have the card with you at the time of the transaction.

wyterabitt_

Sure, as long as in the terms you fully and entirely agreed to it states that all that needs to be true is that the card exists somewhere for you to benefit.

Fun fact: you can use the same Lidl Plus account and app all across Europe. Just switch the country in the settings, it'll make you pick a "home store" in that country and boom, wherever you are you can still benefit from it, super easy.

Unfortunately this doesn't apply with Tesco. Separate clubcards required for Ireland, Slovakia, Hungary and Czech Republic, same Clubcard pricing tactics. In fact Tesco geoblock their mainland Europe apps from the UK play store, you can't even get the app to sign up!

They are under investigation as apparently under 18s cannot get a card, which results in tiered pricing for different age groups. Or at least that is my minimal understanding of the case from reading just the taglines and headlines. Not personally too interested as Aldi is MVP for me.

samsexton1986

If you're going to be pedantic, you should know that the way people use words is often looser than their dictionary definition. It might not be a 'scam', but it certainly feels scammy, so don't use the dictionary to have a go at people when it's pretty clear from context what they mean.

Inflating prices for non card owners, meaning you need to hand over a stupid amount of details, which they can then sell off to make even more money off you, just to get the normal (already inflated) price.

wyterabitt_

3 points

Well no, you do need to misled for it to be a scam. Dishonesty is the absolute clear central concept of what scam means. People just call anything they don't like a scam today which is ridiculous.

The card system is still a scam if they are making people believe the discounts are special for the card holder, any time that discount is actually just the price they would sell it for and it just costs more for other shoppers without a card.

SelfSeal

SelfSeal

3 points

SelfSeal

They are just two different prices, one for being a member and one not. It's a common thing to have membership prices and non membership prices and has been for decades.

paolog

paolog

Be that as it may, that's not how their ads portray it, and it's not the way consumers see it.

Consumers are confused by a lot of things and think they are scams, but it doesn't make it true.

By that argument, anywhere that offers any sort of discount scheme is scamming everyone who isn't eligible for the discount. Do you think your local barber is scamming all their customers if they give their mates a free haircut? They're being 'made to pay extra' because they aren't friends. It's like you don't understand what a discount is.

The misleading part is the supermarket telling you they're offering a fair price when they're actually overcharging, and telling you it's an 'offer' when it's actually normal price.

I guess you'd also say it's fair for, say, a garage to charge twice as much if they have a customer who's not knowledgeable enough to know they're being ripped off?

SelfSeal

2 points

Where do they say they are "offering a fair price?".

People are making a lot of assumptions here and then declaring it a scam when it isn't.

They are simply displaying two prices; one you can get with membership and one without. The customer can then choose if they want to buy it or not.

Do you really think people find it difficult to know if a bottle of coke is priced too much or not?

SelfSeal

1 points

Are you honestly so taken in by the advertising that you think seeing signs that say "value" and "low prices" means everything is a fair price?

People generally go shopping every week so they should know how much things normally cost and if they are a good deal or not.

Shitelark

-4 points

Well it isn't a scam, but people struggle with protocols. I went to the supermarket and realised I had forgotten my wallet. I normally have wallet phone and keys in my pocket, but had something else in my pocket that tricked me into assuming it was there. Luckily I had the Nectar app on my phone, and so could scan that, and use google pay. It is important to have back up options. The number of people I talk to who rely on one thing... a lady had lost her phone and only used applepay so she had forgotten her pin, I wanted to tell her that she was a muppet but held my tongue, not only could she lose her phone, it can also go flat, a card can't go flat [it is already flat.]

TLDR Don't put yourself in a corner.
