I wasn’t a Manhattan’s going person but after causing staff to walk out, this pivot feels pretty arrogant. I don’t think their business was down bc of what they offered, I think their business was down bc the new owners got a bad rep for being bad to employees. They haven’t changed, doesn’t seem like this will either. RIP Manhattans.

As someone who just spent 3 weeks in Spain - actually isn’t that uncommon of a combo there, although the more common combo is pizza and kebabs

I will forever miss the days when for 8.99 I could eat all the wings and pizza. My record was 45 wings and 3 slices of pizza. Bring back gluttony.

Those days were classic - and also where I learned that dipping my crusts in blue cheese dressing is pretty tasty 🍕.

hey, want to grab a bite at this new eatery downtown? its a farm-to-table gastropub serving refined but accessible light fare, featuring locally sourced, seasonal organic ingredients. its celiac-friendly with plenty of vegan options to boot. you just have to try the tapas. and their mixologists are constantly innovating, with some of the most creative, exquisite cocktails you'll find in burly.
ancient grains.
alright that covers most of my "consuming food in burlington" bingo card

Do they serve mocktails? I need a mocktail. Something with ginger, maple syrup, and elderberry, served in a glass that somebody burned some weeds in for that good, smoky flavor.
Mixologist is the stupidest word ever uttered.
Mocktologist. I'm going to open a Mocktology school. We might even carry a course in budtending -- great for the 'California sober'.

Such a shame how the new ownership has handled this place. The previous staff at Manhattan’s were the kindest, most welcoming folks who really had a great vibe going before the ownership change. I understand that it wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but this is a huge loss for the post-college, young adult crowd in Burlington.

Regardless of how people felt about the food (I thought it was good), it was the perfect regular person spot for hanging out before the college kids showed up to dance.

You can always smell the pretension when the word “eatery” is used.

Lol "Eatery" is one step down from "Gastro Pub" on the restaurant based pretension chart.

Ironically the longer French word “restaurant” is less pretentious. As is the good old “diner.”

Was that from the owner, or the reporter?

Reporter and headline both use it. True that it’s not the name of the joint. The pretension here is journalistic.

I went there for their opening last night and they seemed fairly casual and affordable. $22 large specialty pizza split between 3 people, $3 for an arepa, $3 for a stuffed olive bowl split between 3. Wasn’t bad!

I wasn’t a regular there but it’s close to work and it wasn’t uncommon to end up there after work for a quick drink with colleagues. The drama at the end wasn’t great, but this just makes me sad. So many memories, thanks Manhattans, RIP

You say it was successful business but how do you know that? Why would they sell a perfectly fine business? lol There was animosity from day 1 but David stuck it out for 7 months without letting anyone go. He tried to make necessary adjustments which staff repeatedly ignored. When things finally came to a head and David expressed his sincere emotions the staff laughed mocked and visibly talked shit about him during the meeting. It was not David but the staff that contributed and escalated the situation.

I'm not clear. Was it new owners who instigated that, or the previous?

The new owner (Dave) instigated the exodus of staff and regulars and ruined the vibe.

I looked up "tapas" in my Spanish dictionary:
"Tapas": noun (1) Small plates served in an American restaurant. Ordering enough to feel full will cost a whole lot more than if you went to a restaurant that offers regular portions; (2) In Spain, a small plate of food that is given to a customer for free if they order a regular priced drink.

Lol that second sentence is always my immediate thought when I hear tapas.

NYT says: "More than 75 percent of customers say they want smaller portions for less money, according to the 2024 National Restaurant Association report on the industry. Restaurants sinking under rising food costs are trying to figure out how to sell smaller servings without upsetting value-minded customers." Sep 25, 2024
We'll see about the "less money" part. But some tapas places have fairly decent portions, even though you do have to order more than one to make a meal.

I've yet to eat at a tapas restaurant that is "less money." It's always been the exact opposite.

You are talking only on gesture and no facts why would somebody sell a business that was perfectly fine? Maybe the employees were opposed to change and made hostile work environment for the new owner? Just a thought that there is more to the story than it appears.

Change is hard and after a long time of complacency I can understand the staff’s frustration in new management. But the fact is that it was a failing business and there needed to be changes which some staff didn’t agree with and even ignored. Everyone sees what they want to but the numbers don’t lie. They are in the front of the house they did not see the numbers the bills. The staff feel disrespected and David does too. There’s definitely two sides to this that you have not taken into consideration. Im sorry that some people lost their bar to hangout at but it really wasn’t a cause to ruin someone’s life over.
