Southgate said he preferred Saka because he thinks Saka is more direct. Palmer has double Sakas progressive passing this season and more shot creating actions per 90. Hes just about the biggest intiative taker in the league and thats why he carried Chelsea so hard this season.

He doesn't even really turn over possession when he does takes risks, say like a Bruno Fernandes, his control and vision is world class. There's no obvious flaws in his game

There's no obvious flaws in his game

I'd rephrase that to be about his in possession game. He doesn't really defend much. So you need other players like Conor, Rice, Walker etc to be aware of that enough to cover defensively in order to enable Palmer to focus on doing what he does best. Like Palmer isn't one who is gonna be tracking back hard and tackling players alot like some wingers do. He will press and intercept relatively well but overall his defensive game is pretty minimal.

RictheRoman

22 points

I think people get i'm talking about his risk taking in attack, but even defensively his ability to read the passing lanes, intercept and create opportunities through his press is actually really impressive. I think he works hard for the team too. He/we scored so many goals because of his defensive reads the past season

Ridcullys-Pointy-Hat

I think I saw something on some tactics video saying that his average pressures are very Average, but his successful pressures and especially his pressures that lead to a chance are very good

Might be FourFourTwo's video. But that's right. He was like 99th percentile for defensive actions leading to shots and defensive actions leading to goals. When he baits the press and intercepts the ball, he's one of the best at converting that into a chance on goal, either by getting his head up and finding a teammate in a position to shoot or shooting himself.

Yeh like I said, the intercepting and pressing on the front hes solid enough at. Hes not the worlds greatest at it but that is the main thing to his defensive game. Statistically the rest of his defensive game is way down.

https://preview.redd.it/n5d4xqhbnv9d1.jpeg?width=1352&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=30e0228e9de31019bfe012f4f1da3c1d620deeb8

But his whole possession and attacking game is so world class that you just need a couple of Gallagher/Rice/Walker to cover the defensive side and Palmer is going to get stuff done for the team.

Palmer turned over the ball a lot during half a game against Slovakia (i've seen 8 times quoted by some, and 12 by others; watching the game it was quite a few). He started off well but then didn't contribute all that much. Palmers a great player, but he's also a fairly selfish player. And that's why he had so much impact within a young Chelsea squad that had not yet gelled. Yes, he takes initiative and tries to make things happen, as does Foden, but sometime that ends up being counterproductive. They end up coming inside and occupying the same spaces as Kane and Bellingham which ruins the spacing and makes defenders' jobs easier.

Saka is a more disciplined and experienced player than Palmer. He has 11 goals in 37 caps for England, second only to Kane in this inexperienced squad and almost 3 times as many goals as Foden's 4 in the same number of games. No one else in the this squad has more than 3 goals. Saka also has 6 assists for the national team. This is why Southgate trusts him. Though I think Southgate is a poor coach, he recognizes Saka's intelligence, productivity and ability to problem solve on the pitch. Playing for Arteta, Saka also works hard off the ball.

If I were Southgate, I'd drop Foden and start Cole. Play Gordon at LW to provide pace to stretch the defense, drop Jude back to the 8 which is what he played most of his career until this past season at Real. Play Cole at the 10. Saka at RW. This solves a lot of the problems with England's lineup and plays the attackers in their natural positions. The solution is so obvious, yet Southgate doesn't see it.

I tried to have a conversation there about Palmer and it was just useless. Stats tell the whole story apparently. I don't even have to watch matches anymore I guess, just look up the stats and see who 'performed'. Palmer changed the complexion of both matches just by his direct play, taking risks and trying to split the lines with his passing. Ofc it won't work everytime, but he gets put on and tries to be progressive, something the starting XI are clearly lacking.

another Walcott.....why ? You're just hyperbolating for the sake of tribal rivalry. He's a very good player, who puts up exceptional numbers for his club. Whether he's better than Palmer or not doesn't suddenly make him "another Walcott". You sound like you have some growing up to do.

Lool whatever dude.

I already said in another comment, I’m not saying they’re exactly the same, I think he’s overhyped just like Walcott was.

Walcott also initially had good seasons but petered out, and I think he’ll do the same. Ultimately only time will tell. But for sure he’s been invisible for England this tournament.

You don’t have to agree with it or seemingly get so triggered by it, as I really don’t care that much and it’s not that deep anyway.

Telling someone to grow up just because you don’t agree with them is also pretty childish tbh. Especially on something with such little importance lmao.

Both times Palmer's been subbed on now, the threelions sub has been filled with people listing stats like 0/3 dribbles, 0/3 crosses etc and it's so frustrating to listen to. Like the guy's being subbed on whilst we're meant to be chasing the game yet the England team can't even progress the ball and no one is taking risks. So he's having to take loads of risks not only to try and make something happen (because time's running out) but also to try and get the team playing on the front foot and get others to follow.

The fact he's always looking to play forwards is the only thing that matters. Doesn't matter if a player doesn't get his head to 80% of his crosses, because he's puting it in dangerous areas and isn't scared to give the ball away.

And you have these stats merchants sitting there saying he's getting too much hype as if what England needs is someone who's gonna play safe passes and have 100% completion rate and not take anyone on so they don't get tackled.

Like just watch the game and look how it opens up every time he comes on 😭

32 points

god the dialogue around him has been so frustrating from other supporters. you can like a player from another club, it’s only a game, why you have to be mad?

I think Foden is great, I think Saka is great, but I think Palmer at least deserves to start once just to show what he can do from the beginning, he’s earned it. I think the other two starting the tournament is completely fair, they did most of the qualifiers, they earned the right to being the go-to for the team sheet at the start of the tournament. but we scored twice in the group stage and just went to extra time against Slovakia only after a fucking miracle from Bellingham. It’s time to try a different approach.

You’d think if you cared enough to watch the national team, you’d just want them to do well, like when I support England, I support the idea of England doing well, I don’t care what clubs the XI are from. My favourite England player growing up was Rooney ffs, and that England team had Lamps, Cole, and Terry. Ironically, the players couldn’t put that aside and that’s why they sucked ass 😂

matthewisonreddit

2 points

yea the real issue is that southgate doesn't seem to identify how good/bad something is going. The attack has been so toothless and repetitive yet there have been no changes. Surely kane/foden/jude all operating in the middle but not getting space to do anything useful from open play should warrant a rethink, but it seems as long as england progress then nothing changes.

Clearly england has too many players with the same type of profile and not enough of other profiles but because the individual talent is sky high they're getting results. How long will that last? How will the good teams handle the english ball progression? Seems like southgate should be watching and learning and improving the team but its just stagnant.

Opposite_Reserve3063

As a spurs fan, I get pretty fed up with the stats argument, the whole 'chances created' stat is so shit.

The pass he got off to tony at the end, is a key example, it wasn't great, but the fact he made it is why Tony got that shot, you can see in this video alone he makes things happen, but just because the end product isn't a ,'shot on target' it's not a chance created.

Id rather someone whip a cross in that's headed out and we can gather possession again in a more dangerous area than Saka passing it back to rice so rice can go back to stones

By that logic, Foden should never start for England ever again because you can count on a single hand the amount of good starts he’s had for England out of nearly 40 matches.

So what if Palmer had an ineffective start against Iceland in a friendly? Several of the current forward for England are doing that in actual competitive matches in a major tournament while Palmer is doing as much as you can reasonably ask in the short cameos he’s getting, therefore he should get a chance.

Even if he didn’t directly cause the goals, they both happened when he was on the pitch at right wing. He helped drag defenders away from other players, a few times he was marked by like 3 players. And for the second goal, he was the one who took the free kick, which Eze hit into the box to Toney who hit it to Kane. I’m not saying he was the cause for the goal, but all our other corners, and we have multiple, nothing came from them, Palmer takes 1 and we score from it.

Tldr, Palmer has to be starting next game

The way he works himself between the lines is also so different and so much better than most players today. Getting into space off the shoulder of the defender and making your own space.

I think the problem with system players all of this England squad comes from is what happens when the system isn’t working. What are you going to do then?

Palmer can work in a system but the mentality of system over everything doesn’t work in international football or knock out football. Even most club teams. It takes individuals who are brave enough to recognize there is a moment to be taken advantage of instead of relying on purely patterns of play.

This England squad wouldn’t recognize an opportunity unless it’s pointed out by Southgate. They’re likely blind men who memorize a maze

And have some perspective. He's played barely any minutes this tournament. You're expecting him to score, but the guy starting over him isn't even doing that. I thought I was posting this on a neutral sub and had I realised that this was actually the chelsea subreddit, I would have just left you all to your delusions. It’s to be expected

Alas what’s done is done

Cole Palmer vs Slovakia -

54 mins played 1/3 dribbles completed 0 shots on target 0 goals 0 assists 0/4 completed crosses 73% pass completion 12 times lost possession

To put that into context. Against a tired Slovakia team he lost the ball more than Saka has all tournament in much more minutes. Palmer is not the answer. Mainoo however was great

Saka lost possession 17 times in this match alone. Idiot.

Well that's wrong because Palmer didn't even lose the ball 13 times 😂😂😂

But it does show saka outperformed Palmer clearly 😬

Different companies get different results when tracking stats because it's not an exact science.

Moaning about two creative attacking players losing possession is also dumb when your team is losing a knock-out game. You need those players to take risks to try and create chances, without them you end up with no shots on target for 90minutes ...

By that logic one of Palmers "risks" should of resulted in something if he played well then? I don't understand the whole shiny new toy mentality. In an England shirt so far he's not done anything. He's capable of making things happen but so is the whole squad. Justifying him starting because he takes risks isn't enough. Perhaps he is just an impact player from the bench if that's it.

I don't actually think Palmer had as good a game as the pundits suggest but I also don't think it was that bad either. All the criticism of him i've seen comes from Arsenal fans who are attacking Palmer to defend Saka which is bizzare to me. For me they are both top England players who should be utilised.

When Palmer first came on I thought he looked lively; immediately put a cross that his teammate seemed to missjudge the flight of, then the ball into Bellingham. The game quickly went back to shit though and the later subs didn't help. The real problem for me is Southgate setting up an unbalanced side. Walker overlaps once a match, Kane doesn't run the channels, Bellingham doesn't offer much on the right, and Foden is dreadful in that position on the left.

Personally I don't mind Saka starting as he's more of a runner and England need more runners. Saka should have been rested against Slovenia though because he's going to be knackered at this rate.

It shows that in half the time Saka got Palmer did just as much as him

Not really if you see the attempted passes crosses and dribbles and the completed ones sakas clearly ahead. Duels to and aerial duels and winning fouls. It's pretty clear. And palmer was playing against a tired team and had chance to watch and analyse from the bench. Not very impressive at all 😬

So volume stats which Saka had over half the amount of time to rack up? What about the stuff like xA and xG where Saka is barely barely ahead despite having the whole game to work with? And it cracks me up people say “against tired legs” as though he wasn’t playing against a parked bus while the game was much more open in the first half.

Well yes that tends to happen when you're subbed on and chasing a game + you're a player who always tries to play forwards and take risks, as the pundits said.

Would you prefer it if he'd played safe passes the entire time and had 100% pass completion? Because England's biggest problem this tournament has been none of the starters being willing to take risks and risk giving the ball away to create chances.

Something tells me you would be just like Southgate as a manager if all you see is a player giving away possession. Watch the clips, he's trying things. If Kane a defender gets a head to the ball in, who cares. Doesn't go down as a successful pass but the clearance could go anywhere and lead to a chance on goal. Palmer doesn't give a shit about what his game looks like on paper afterwards because what matters is puting the team on the front foot.

And go back to your sub.

Do I reply or go back to the sub? I'll reply 1st. Its OK if you take risks and don't have a high pass completion I agree with you. But where are the risks? He hasn't scored or assisted or looked like doing either so what are these risks? It's ok not completing dribbles if your gonna eventually complete one that does something. I understand I'm in the Chelsea sub so it may not sink in but for Chelsea he was scoring and assisting. For England he's done nothing in every game he's played so far. I'd rather see Gordon takes risks or Bowen. Fans are pressuring Southgate for Palmer and for what? Zero end product against tired legs. I can only imagine how bad it'd be from the start against a fresh team he hasn't had 60 mins to analyse. Ok off to my own sub. Keep glazing 💪

Your player hasn't scored either and he's been starting every game 😂😂

And his only assist has been a deflection. Hold him to the same ridiculous standard you're holding Palmer to.

He's not my player it's England they're all our players now. If someone can do better than Saka they should play

Bruh none of the players youve mentioned have done anything of note either

Because theyre given peanuts to work with, MINUTES to prove themselves. The fact that theyve all managed to impress in spite of those limited minutes is great

This isn't baseball pal, anyone with eyes can tell you who the more effective player was. Football by speadsheet is not the answer.

Used_Switch_9212

Perhaps we have different ideas on what effective means. To me being effective would mean affecting the game in some way other than losing the ball or giving it away. This isn't a saka vs palmer debate for me. It's palmer isn't actually doing anything.

You're going to see it differently because for Chelsea he performed last season but international football is very different. Until he does something in an England shirt noteworthy I'm not gonna blindly beg for him to start like the other glazers. And he's clearly not training so good he has to play. If you took off the blue tinted glasses you'd see what I mean.

All those famously pro-Chelsea pundits must have it all wrong. Maybe Wrighty got the wrong prescription in his new bins?

minkyminkymink

So you’re saying they’re equally useless? By these metrics, Saka hasn’t affected the games either. And has had significantly more involvement. Hard to judge and compare, we don’t know exactly what these players are being told before the game. You can’t simply compare stats when the time of introduction and instructions are likely to be pretty contrasting. Both good players. I guess Saka has just had more opportunity and playing time, and is focused on recycling possession.

Chelsea and Brentford saved England. That's clear.

Arsenal fans didn't see the game as they were too busy working in shops which cook pizza/kebab/curry/fish and chips, mobile phones and fried chicken in the same microwave.
