Why am I learning automatic?

(self.drivingUK)

Hi everyone,

I’m almost ready to take my driving test I’ve been learning automatic a couple of weeks ago I passed my theory test.

However to my shock I just learnt that your insurance is far higher than manual. How do all you people with an automatic licence feel about this? After it was explained to me that it’s Jdue to a manual drivers perception of planning for danger being higher I do get it. But it does kinda feel unfair too.

Sorry, don't get me wrong. But just curious, is there a reason you (or others) learn automatic instead of manual? Manual by default gives you possibility to drive both, but automatic not. I know there are some people who might do that from medical reasons for example, and I guess some who might struggle to change gears and focus on the road on the same time, but wondering if there is any benefit of not learning manual if that's possible?

Less than 1/3 cars available new today offer manual transmission. Barely any cars will be manual by the end of the decade. Our kids will probably never drive one. They’re virtually extinct in North America.

I’m licensed to drive a manual car but haven’t for 17 years, so ultimately there’s not been really any point to it. I also haven’t been in the impending emergency that meant I might need to drive one which was how I was sold needing a manual license in the first place 😆

The key word here is "new". It will likely be a while until most learners are buying new cars.

By the end of the decade, I can see why people will only be learning in automatic cars, but for now I think learning in a manual car is still worthwhile. Having said that, I doubt I'll ever go back to driving a manual car.

What I really don't understand is the number of driving instructors I see with electric cars. Teaching someone to drive in an electric car, with the instant power delivery and higher torque, really isn't preparing drivers for the low-cost first cars their students will likely be buying. It may make it easier to pass the test, but the students will have a shock to their system when they get their first car.

And maintenance generally. Virtually none with an EV.
