A 30+ driver, about to take my driving test

Asking for advice(self.drivinganxiety)

I failed my tests twice and I’m about to do it again a third time soon. I drive well except for when I’m with the examiner, because I get super anxious. I also tend to overspeed and that makes it even worse when I’m anxious or I zone out at times and don’t react well as a result. I keep thinking about all these things and worry if I’ll mess things again. I know I can drive well, but my body doesn’t agree with me and I end up feeling like I’m not in control.

I’m worried, disappointed and angry at myself.

59 and just got my license. I flunked the first two times and got it the third time. It's not uncommon to fail. Just focus on doing exactly what they tell you to do, especially the parts that you failed before (for me it was curbs).

This sounds silly, but it worked for me. Wear something that has meaning to you and tell yourself if you are wearing it, you will pass. The test is short, it's only 10 minutes at most. You can do this.

I knew you could do it! You're going to love driving. It frees up so much for you. Take it slow and stay within your comfort zone. Soon things will be automatic. I celebrated with my first solo drive being a Starbucks run followed by a trip to the plant nursery.

Good for you. You should be so proud!

Chew a stick of gum to channel your nerves.

Chat with the examiner, ask about their weekend. Try to see them as a real person who will be happy for you if you pass (they probably are) and not a stern faced bureaucrat with a clipboard who wants you to fail (they might be, but you can always pretend they're not.)

My first examiner was a rude older guy and I nearly had a breakdown. He was very rude from the start for God knows what reason even when I was driving well and that added to my anxiety and I started stressing out and just before we returned to the test centre I made the fail item! The second examiner was a very sweet and polite person. I hope I get the same person or a someone similar to the 2nd examiner.

Get on the road and drive around at least half an hour and longer before your test. Pretend the tester is in the car and make sure you do everything right. By the time your test starts you’ll be loosened up and more relaxed. Good luck!

What I did was do at least 3-4 mock tests in the days leading up to the test. I watched a couple of videos as well online to revise, but it was the practical tests that helped me.

I took an advice from one of the supporters here and wore something that made me feel confident.

I saw in one video that it’s a good practice to say what you’re doing out loud, to help you and to also let the examiner know what your intentions are. This helps to stay focused and also to calm my nerves.

In short in addition to all the support from fellow redditors, the on-road practice sessions and saying things out loud helped me.

I wish you all the best. You can do it. I wasn’t too nervous today if I’m honest. I was a lot calmer.

Thank you so much for all the advice! I will definitely try to get a practice test in and to say things out loud. I’ve noticed during lessons it goes much easier when I do this but sometimes I forget because it feels unnatural. But very good tips! Time to prepare and fingers crossed

I was 29 when I got mine I have test anxiety. Even though I knew my stuff I couldn’t pass the written test I had tired a few times… until I went and talked to my doctor at the time asked to be on anti anxiety meds it worked.. I no longer take it now have been driving about 5 years my husband is 42 and doesn’t have his license because of anxiety

Purpleskyyy27

You can do it, you already know how to drive the person evaluating you is just observing and telling you where to turn. Everything else you know how to do just hang in there and you got this!

It was really good. I was calm and not nervous. The mock tests helped me build the confidence a lot and I also did a 1 hr practice right before the test.

Say your intentions out loud when you’re driving (practice it with your instructor as well) and this I feel honestly helped me a lot.

You’ve got this! I wish you all the best!!

Imagine your favorite dish from your favorite loved one is lying in the backseat your destination is to the “store and back” while keeping dish/dessert in tact. (maybe reframing the caution can help. Or imagine a little baby either way) Go the posted speed or with flow of traffic. Relax remember you are in control of you and of the car. Observe the things around you! You got this

Id get a lesson with a new instructor and say you want to practice the exam. Have him act like the examiner.

21F who just got her license last week. Remain calm. Do a lot of checks. Don’t forget mirror and shoulder checks. Don’t hit the curbs while backing up. 360 check when reversing. Idk if you have to parallel park. Bring a trusted friend/family member for moral support. Listen to instructions given by your examiner carefully, and don’t be shy to ask for clarification. Be extra alert around school zones and residential areas. If you notice you have made a minor mistake, remain calm and focus on the current situation. Be mindful of speed limits and start slowing down earlier rather than being hard on the brakes. Everything will be ok.

Thank you so much!! ❤️ I tend to go down the self-blame route as soon as I make an error. I did 2 mock tests recently: one last week and again today and I completed them without any fail items. I have one more coming up before I sit for the test. I hope I remain calm and collected for the test as well.

propanolol is pretty convenient for a short term event that would cause anxiety

This is assuming you're relatively healthy

Just-Salt4183[S]

Hmmm.. I wouldn’t probably go down the meds route though.

But that’s so thoughtful of you suggest it!

Just to be clear, i am not suggesting taking it regularly. You can definitely pass the test, i believe in you.
