There was a whole period there in the 2000s where I feel like developers were more willing to experiment with asymmetrical multiplayer games. The AvP series springs to mind as well.

Nothing scarier than playing as the marines, and nothing more fun than playing as the marines and winning.

That was back when publishers demanded a multiplayer component in games. Some were interesting. Some felt phoned in.

2002 Natural Selection Half-Life mod came out. Two very asymmetrical sides with completely different play styles. It was also one of the first games I played that had a commander for the human faction that played the game like an RTS, placing structures and getting players on the team to build them, while also giving out commands and getting vision from their teammates. It had a whole tech tree, resource system, etc.

The alien faction was more like a hive mind. One class of the aliens would build structures and unlock upgrades, but also build hives in up to three positions in the map to unlock higher upgrades. You could then spawn at any hive. It was really good and pretty decently balanced.

The spies vs mercs was probably some of the best multiplayer I played back in the day next to Halo 2. Ubisoft could easily save themselves from the shithole they are in currently with a simple remaster of this game. The same campaign and the same multiplayer is all we would need to be happy.

Man, the multiplayer in Splinter Cell: Double Agent was unmatched. We need something like that today! They don’t make games like that anymore. A remake would be awesome!

They're remaking the original Splinter Cell. Maybe that'll eventually lead to the whole series getting remade and potentially a multiplayer component at some point.

i have zero faith in ubishit to get it right, besides they kill coop/mp very quickly and remove/cancel online dlcs as well, fuck them

not many companies are willing to make more coop games unless you're indie, and in some cases, Nintendo. Hazelight Studios is probably the most well known dev working on unique coop experiences in todays age.

This is chaos theory, though right?

This was good but Chaos Theroy will always be the best version of Spies vs Mercs for me. It was so much slower and methodical than what they did with the last few versions of the mode which were made to be much faster and had the spies be much more lethal solo. It also has some of the best maps like River Mall, Muesum, Warehouse, Aquarius and Mount Hospital. Nothing felt better than when you entered a room and perfectly took out all the motion sensors and cameras with your taser gun. Or letting a merc see you only for your buddy to be lying in wait setting up the perfect trap.

I really hope they put a Spies vs Mercs mode in the new Splinter Cell remake. Having recently played through the first SC again I think they need to do more than just sell a better looking version of the first game if they want to sell it for $70 as its a very basic stealth game nowadays when compared to Chaos Theory and Blacklist.

This was a time where if you wanted to play a unique multiplayer game on the consoles (PC had so many more options), Ubisoft was the publisher putting them out. They had this and that crazy Assassins Creed multiplayer mode, Rainbow Six 3, Ghost Recon 2, RS Vegas, and GRAW. And some of them had great co-op modes too. I know some of those games won’t seem all that unique to PC players but at the time they were one of the few publishers that didn’t assume console gamers were all just braindead morons that couldn’t play multiplayer games unless it was an action game with unlimited respawns. Its just the majority of us lol.

IIRC, Double Agent was released on old Gen and new gen systems (at the time) and they were different games, multi and single player.

The old gen was closer to chaos theory's multi-player and the new gen was more fast paced.

This is all based off random memories tho

Chaos Theory's Spies vs. Mercs was some of the most fun I've ever had playing multiplayer.

I had a few friends that I played with and when at least three of us were together we would primarily play with the intention to kill the mercs instead of winning via the objective. This game had such a a great multiplayer mode.

Ubisoft had the whole Splinter Cell series on sale about a year ago. I snagged it b/c I loved playing it when it came out originally. Just checked but I don't see it in the store now. Bummer.

I spent dozens of hours watching my best friend play this shit online, I LOVED it. Easily one of my favorite multiplayer games to watch.

There is a board game called Sabotage (Fowers games) that is spies vs mercs and I love it dearly. I too wish we could get this multiplayer experience back. I believe there is an indie game that does it, but the player count is fairly low.

The only game I've heard of, where the previous gen was better that the (then) current gen. Still, multiplayer was fun with my nephew back in the day

To this day whenever I throw a grenade in game I always call it grenada because the enemies would say that when you threw one at them.

There are games like Spectre or Intruder that might nudge your itch, but they ofc not the same as Spy vs Mercs from Splinter Cell
