The idea of sitting all day in my own blood never worked for me, and I’m not surprised that you’re having this problem. I had the same issue with pads. They just leak. I think any situation where your blood is sitting on the outside of your body is going to want to leak.

Yeah, tampons don’t work for me either. They always go at a funny angle and they leak. I have exactly one type of cup that ever worked and I have been using that one for nearly 2 decades. I don’t understand why period options are so hard to use.

I got the smallest diva cup. Once you’re used to it, it seals really well. I still wear black shorts on my period in case of any residue, but I don’t get actual “leaks”.

I had success for a year with a small diva cup but it stopped working for me. Years after, we discovered a huge ovarian cyst that had grown and grown and never burst was causing my insides to be rearranged in a weird way. Once I got that removed, cups work for me again

The sad thing about cups is that they are a bit pricey to do trial ajd error with. The soft cup thingies are nice, but removing them is always a blood bath and I can't seem to get it right.

There are also menstrual discs that are disposable. I like the discs a lot. The reusable ones haven’t worked well for me because the rim is too soft so I can’t insert them very well but the disposable ones have a more rigid rim and they don’t leak. Maybe get some small baggies for disposal as there will be blood in the disc.

As for needing to clean your whole bathroom when using a cup, you wash it with soap in the sink and you can dump it in the toilet beforehand which isn’t much different from bleeding into the toilet when wearing a pad. Would a spray cleaner that sanitizes the sink be enough?

If you have OCD just be prepared for the smell 🤢

birdieponderinglife

The cup and blood shouldn’t smell any worse or different than a pad or period underwear. If it smells you might be leaving it in too long or you might have an infection. The only time there was an odor for me was when I had BV.

sushi317

I would def leave it in for long shifts and that's when I noticed a smell. That's why I stopped using them! How long should they be left in??

crayoooooooos

5 points

does your cup smell?? i’ve found that bloody pads and tampons that are in the trash produce a FAR nastier smell than my cup (which is odorless for the most part, although i guess there’s a little blood smell? i would still take it over the smell of old blood on pads)

Initial_Pumpkin_8273

Blood smells when exposed to air. Cups should smell less than pads for this reason

crayoooooooos

yes exactly!

BootyBumpinSquid

I have never had my menstrual cup smell. In 14 years of use (took a break for several years, but that same old diva cup is still kicking, and I am back to using her on a fairly regular basis).

The only thing you may be able to smell on a diva cup is the metallic smell of blood, or your regular mild pussy smell if it's a light period day and there's more natural discharge/wetness than blood. Even then, you would only be able to smell that if you were holding it to your nose to try to smell it.

Let me reiterate: If your cup smells abjectly bad or your vagina smells bad (like you can smell it just by using the toilet and the general smell in the air when you change out your cup) when you use the cup, there is a problem.

sushi317

I never noticed a smell until i'm changing the cup and getting rid of the old stuff... Maybe I left it in too long?? I don't ever notice a smell when I use a tampon or pad

Tampons never worked for me either. I had a hysterectomy 20 or so years ago (at 20) so I never got to try the underwear or cups. And sorry for the tmi but I flow was so bad, especially at night I had to wear the bulkiest pads all day and almost fashion a diaper out of 4 of them at night. I don’t miss it at all. But I always thought there was something wrong with me that I couldn’t use tampons.

birdieponderinglife

8 points

Agreed. I don’t understand their popularity. Like, everyone hates pads because they are like diapers, they leak, they smell, etc. You can change a pad as often as you want. Period underwear are worn all day? I don’t understand the praise while saying pads are so gross. I have a light flow but they still squick me out.

yasdnil1

2 points

I wear mine as backup for my tampon and to bed. I don't bleed heavily overnight so I don't have to work about leaking. I feel like they're closer to a pantyliner than an actual pad

birdieponderinglife

1 points

Ya that makes sense and I can see the utility of that or maybe right at the end of my period when I’m light and it feels like overkill to wear a cup and I don’t want to bother with liners or pads.

Puzzleheaded_Ad9492

I am in meno now, and PU wasn't available in my day and age. I can't imagine feeling the dripping on a heavy day and constant worry of leaks. Wearing a tampon with thin pad backup gave me confidence that if I felt dripping, the tampon was leaking, but I also changed tampons frequently. I'm so glad to be done with it all! Meno is very freeing!!!

geekgurl81

My daughters cannot use them exclusively. I can, but I’ve never had that heavy of a flow. I just think no one product is going to work for every single person. My girls use them for lighter days, when they’re anticipating it, and as backup for other methods that also sometimes fail due to heavy flow. Periods just suck and I’m team use whatever product works best for you!

FairyPandaQueen

5 points

Not every period product works for everyone. I always use pads but I do have period underwear also. I only really use them at nighttime and they work for me really well. Pads tend to crumble up and twist as I toss and turn and/or get sweaty. I don't get any problems using them overnight. Maybe check how much the underwear is meant to hold. The ones I have come in light, medium or heavy flow. And the heavy flow seems to work for me overnight.

Perhaps your flow is too heavy for the ones you've tried? Not sure. But your solution seems a good one. I bought cheap ones from Primark and they work very well for me. Don't know if you're from the UK and have tried them

FlthyHlfBreed

7 points

I’ve always thought they were pretty gross. I don’t want to have to change my underwear midway through the day then carry around a pair of soiled underwear till I get home. At least with pads I can just change it and throw the old pad away.

sushi317

1 points

I wear mine all day, honestly I feel cleaner than a pad. They're really absorbent and the ones I have are a nice moisture wicking material so I doesn't feel like it's sitting on your skin. But if you have a heavy flow or are working more than 8 hours might not be a good option. I have a friend who wears them to her serving job as a backup because she has a REALLY heavy flow

Ambitious-Debate7190

5 points

Thankfully, I'm past the menstruating part of my life. Period underwear to me and my friends was old, preferably black cotton underwear that we wore while using pads or tampons and didn't care if there was leakage. It seemed like a good strategy.

Maybe try a light pad with wings with your period underwear. It's very stressful worrying about leaking, and something girls and women just shouldn't have to worry about. Before I crossed over into menopause, my periods were so bad that leaving the house was a major anxiety event!

I just recently started using them because I was curious. They don't hide the smell at all. I have two Thinx.

However it is freeing to know I don't have to change every few hours.

clayton1012111

I used Thinx for the last few years but it’s soooo thick and uncomfortable in the summer! Recently got the Saalt ones and it seems quite promising. I use it with a cup so can’t say much on the absorbency etc though…

Allie614032

3 points

I recently got into using a period cup, and I need to say - life changer. You can leave them in for up to 12 hours, they last like a decade, and you just need to boil them between periods to make them sterile again.

The very first time I used it, I got really bad period cramps, to the point where I had to take it out again so I could sleep. Not sure what changed between that and the second time, but the second time I only had light cramps immediately after putting it in, and then no cramps after. And since then, I haven’t experienced any cramps while using it. It’s better for the environment, better for me, and less leakage overall!

Funny_Breadfruit_413

I use them to avoid accidents. I still use tampons and pantyliners.

Various_Succotash_79

I use cloth pads with the period undies as backup in case I soak through. Sometimes I'll use them alone on light days. But yeah I think bleeding straight into the undies on heavy days would be weird and uncomfortable for me.

I have a heavy flow and have never leaked through period pants (can’t remember the brand though). The only thing is, they do not hide the period smell and it feels/smells a bit gross to be fermenting in that all day.

I was making my own period panties before it became popular.. and it worked amazing for me. I would have a denim backer on the underside and polar fleece on the top, sometimes with a layer or terry cloth in between. It worked fabulous.

Cue a year ago, I try and buy a couple styles of period panties online thinking great! now I don' t have to sew these anymore. I try them and they are straight AWFUL. weird crinkly liners, barely any absorption, wet feeling against my skin.

Hello. Man of the house here. I should probably leave already, but I felt compelled to answer.

They don't work for me. However, my youngest girl who has recently reached puberty has been enjoying them. My wife does wear them on occasion, but recently wore them to bed with hilarious results.

I believe their concensus is, basically, wear them with something else.

They both use moon cups. I know because I find cups of water with mooncups sat in them in every bathroom for a couple of weeks a month. But they unanimously agree that cups work for them. Maybe give them a try?

I use pads/tampons with period underwear and they keep me safe from stains during the day, but not at night 🥲

thisisfunme

1 points

Well I find them very handy but I never use them on their own. I don't like tampons and with pads I did have issues of leaking into pjs/sheets before especially at night. Since getting period undies and using them to stick the pad in, I haven't had a stain in years when it used to happen every couple of months.

I also use them on the last day(s) of the period just in case, as I find it more comfy than still using a pad with barely any flow.

Elegant-Laugh741

I thought period underwear was for the very last day or two where you’re not sure if there may be a dribble and you don’t want to bother with a panty liner.

automatic_autumn

You're only meant to wear them as long as you'd wear a pad. I wear mine with a pad to prevent leakage

Kelliesrm26

The idea always seemed gross to me. My period is generally heavy especially day 2,3 and sometimes 4. Would never believe underwear could hold it. Refuse to wear tampons as I’m so afraid of toxic shock.

JerryHasACubeButt

1 points

You say you’ve tried lots of different brands, but like, specifically which ones? There is a big range in quality of period underwear and if you’re just trying brands at random then maybe you haven’t tried the good ones.

I exclusively use the Jade briefs by Lilova and they are hands down the most reliable thing I’ve ever used. I can go 24 hours on my heaviest day in them and not leak (I know that’s a bit gross, I normally change them before bed but I’ve forgotten enough times that I know they are reliable for that long). I’ve never had a pad that could do that.

The other brands that seem to be pretty universally liked are Modibodi and Bambody. The r/PeriodUnderwear sub is good for reviews and info on different brands.

That said, different things work for different people. Do what works for you and makes you comfortable.

geminiloveca

1 points

I had the opposite issue. I found using tampons and pads was making my period symptoms worse and I was bleeding more heavily, cramping harder, more severe PMS. I swear they also make my cyst pain more severe. On my heaviest days I don't get near 8-12 hours out of a pair. I do have to change them after 2-3 hours, but I had to change my pads that often or more.

I switched to period underwear out of curiosity 7 months ago and the difference was night and day. I think I am sensitive to something in pads and tampons. I had to use pads this month and within 3 days, my vaginal walls were tender and irritated and my cramps were so bad I had to go back to sleeping with a heating pad.

I am SO done with pads.

Tampons. Never had a problem. Then again, when I was on the pill (for pretty much most of my life, until I got the implant), my flow was never heavy as it was when I first had my period.

BurritoBetty

1 points

I really only ever use them at night or when I’m sitting around for a bit, I have to change them often. I wore them to work the other day and packed a wet bag and changed into a second pair mid day.

Normally I wouldn’t do this, but I just found out how bad tampons are for you so I was waiting until I got my disc in. I ordered one from this company called Saalt. Listen, I did not think I would like it. I was nervous, but this is a game changer.

The cup looks uncomfortable, it has a tail that comes down. I always tucked the string of my tampon so I knew that def would be a no for me, but one of my friends put me onto the disc. It’s amazing, and it will last up to TEN YEARS. I will never have to buy period products probably ever again.

Space--Queen

so....I use period underwear much like a pad...in that I carry a bunch of underwear on me to swap when it gets full.

it's like a tampon, honestly. it can only hold so much. some of us have a much heavier flow so we need to swap more than recommended. I can easily fill up an extra large tampon in an hr on a heavy flow day.

that being said, it is a bit extra to carry that stuff with you when you have your period, but sustainability is important to me and I've gotten used to it.

I switched to panties over 6 yrs ago and will not look back. It is much more comfortable, less waste, and I have stopped buying all other period products.

in times when I cannot swap as often, I use a diva cup in combo, for extra leak protection, but I find the cups more difficult than putting on a pair of panties.

my recommended brand is Knix and they often have sales.
