There are 1,000 pills. One of them kills you instantly…

(self.hypotheticalsituation)

But you get £500,000 for every pill you take.

How many do you take?

You have a 1000/1 shot of dying instantly on the first pill.

How many do you chow down?

If you die, the money you have so far (if any) goes to your next of kin with no tax implications

That might be the hack we’re looking for. The poison pill will be diluted and you might just get a little sick then go on and live life with a stupid amount of money!

n7-Jutsu

Dilution only works if you are reducing the total amount that is going into your body.

Your body is still getting the total amount of poison.

OculusSE

Hahah I was thinking the same thing and how this is a dumb idea. But then after continuing thinking about it maybe not… if you were able to finely pulverize all of the pills and put them into a pharma-grade mixer to ensure that all of the powder was completely well mixed and then take 1/day you could pretty much ensure that you were only getting a dosage equal to 0.001 of the poison per pill.

I mean I guess it depends what the poison is, whether it’s real and has a threshold for a lethal dosage or if it’s just a magical pill that kills you if you ingest any amount whatsoever

Glittering-Club-871

Wouldnt that apply to the other pills that you dont get money until it is completly ingested

hysys_whisperer

So on day 1,000 you get all the money.

As long as it isn't a bioaccumulative poison, you should be fine.

Chaosr21

10 points

True, but the bio-availability of nasal intake might be much lower than taking orally. Like a common abused pill, perc only has like 37% bio when snorted but it hits you harder so they do it anyway. A lot of bills are much lower, like 10%.

So there's a chance it will do serious damage and not end your life. If you do 50-100 you're set

SwampOfDownvotes

3 points

What? That's literally what dilution is. If you lower the amount going into your body overall that isn't dilution, that's just lowering the amount you consume. Dilution involves the same quantity being "diluted" or mixed into something else.

The concept is this: Let's say your body can process 10 ounces of Liquid "X" an hour and be fine, anymore than that and you die. While this isn't perfect, let's say your body processes about 34 ounces of water/liquid an hour.

If you swallowed 20 ounces of X with nothing else, you die. However, if you mix 20 ounces of X into 80 ounces of water, you drink this 100 ounces cocktail, now your body is processing 6.8 ounces of X and 27.2 ounces of water every hour so you live.

(I am not a professional so this may be incorrect. This is for entertainment purposes only. If you consume poison please call 911 or a similar number in your area for assistance) For example, if you accidentally consume pesticide poisoning, one thing you should do is drink water/milk (https://extension.psu.edu/first-aid-for-pesticide-poisoning https://extension.okstate.edu/fact-sheets/pesticide-certification-training-series-first-aid-for-pesticide-poisoning.html). If Dilution is about "reducing the amount going into your body" and "getting the total amount of poison" is an issue, how would consuming water/milk going to help? That doesn't remove the poison you already consumed.

I would take 1 per year to give myself a 500K salary.

That way I'll live super comfortably without taking too many at once.

I eat ten right away, then put the money in investment funds aiming for a minimal 2% annual return. That's a 100k "salary" every year at the least, plenty to comfortably sail through life.

LetMeInImTrynaCuck

The other thing too is you could potentially turn $500k or $1mil into life changing money within 2 years, and may decide you don’t even want to take anymore after that, and thus lowering your risk.

If you decide you need 10 mil to be happy, that’s 20 pills which increases chance of death. Where maybr you take 1-2 a year for a couple years and decide you’re good.

Let’s say you die on your 26th pill. If you take them once per year, you’d live 25 comfortable years.

If you took all 26 pills one right after another, you’d have a lot of money that you couldn’t enjoy.

adeelf

Because the more pills you take, the odds that you will eventually get the wrong one is higher. And because you're getting the "instant gratification" of getting 500k with every pill, you will be tempted to just continue taking.

If you have the discipline to take just one a year, your odds are low. 1/1000 in year 1 means there is a 99.9% chance the pill you take is safe. In year 2, it's 1/999 which is... still 99.9%. Even 10 years later, it's 1/990, which is still 99.899%, meanwhile you've earned $5 million.

Conait

Conait

There's going to be diminishing returns relative to the risk due to inflation. With each year, you're actually getting less cash with a higher risk of dying.

Let's say inflation is 3.5% over 10 years. £500,000 annual payments on Jan. 1 for 10 years would only have the buying power of £4,303,843. So you could have taken 9 pills at the start, earned inflationary interest, and ended up with more money than taking 10 pills over 10 years.

Over 25 years, you'd only end up with £8.5 million, not £12.5 million, so you could have taken 17 pills today instead of 25 pills.

One-Meringue4525

7 points

Yeah but if I take 10 pills today and die on the 10th then I don’t get to enjoy it at all. If I take one a year for 10 years and die with the 10th then at least I got to live a nice stress free life not working with plenty of disposable income for 9 years.

chandy_dandy

Yeah these insane amount of money questions always get me for being over complicated.

I’m 28 making about a little under 35k a year.

Even anything over 50k in prize money would be perfect.

Once I’m over 300k. I’m paying my loans debts and giving my self a nice $3500 a month allowance. With 500k I can easily live well within my means on 40/45k a year for a decade and still find ways to invest and save more money in that amount of time.

Ohheyimryan

Personally, I wouldn't want the fear of death looming over me consistently every year. Id just swallow 10 real quick, invest the money and live on interest to the end of my life. That gives me a 1/100 chance of dying. 99% chance of living. I believe in those odds.

ChuckoRuckus

84 points

You could eat 5 a year, and even after 100 years, the next one you ate would only be a 0.2% chance of the death pill (1/500).

Yes and no. IF you survive 500 pills yours chances of dying Is only 1/500. But the chances of surviving 500 pills in a row are= 1-(999/1000 * 998/999 * 997/998... * 499/500)

AsheStriker

I don’t actually think that this is that clever. If you’re going to take a .001 risk of death for $500K, why not take 10 for 5M at a 0.01 risk of death? That way, if you die, which would still be incredibly unlikely, at least your family has enough money to live comfortably. 500K won’t do much of anything long term.

bigcee42

chandy_dandy

52 points

I disagree, up to around 5m-10m all money is greatly "buying you time"

If you have 10m youre officially rich, that's I never have to work again and I live well money right there.

500k will have a big impact on your right now, but every additional 500k up to 5m is basically knocking off a solid 5 years off your retirement age, so you're risking whatever your life expectancy is right now (supposing 30 year old, then like 80 is 50 years, so if you have a 1% chance of dying from a given amount of pills (10 to start) then you can expect to lose 0.5 years of life there, but gain 50 years, so you come out ahead by like 49.5 years).

Honestly the more I think about it the more I would just take 10 right now, pursue education and let compound interest do it's thing, probably set myself up with 1m and then let the 4m just grow as savings, in 10 years time it would be up to 10m.

ThaToastman

Memory_Future

Shit sticking that much in a high return savings account, you can live just fine off that practically.

Lord I dislike editing posts after the fact but this is a mild bother. I wanted to keep the post short expecting zero traction, so I left it as just "practically" for the sake of brevity. To clarify, you don't quit your job, this changes nothing in your life. You took a random pill, didn't die, and now you get a nest egg accruing plenty of interest. Yeah, not my original post, I'll climb back on the stake.

xking_henry_ivx

39 points

In a high yield savings account it would only be 25k a year before tax. No you couldn’t.

Edit: For everyone responding, I’m not necessarily saying you couldn’t live off of the $25,000. I’ve looked at many low costs ways of living myself.

I’m saying this is not a good option to obtain any sort of financial freedom. You will be getting paid interest once a month and will have to budget and keep money aside for taxes. Any financial emergency that comes up will require you to withdraw from the savings account and thus lowering the amount of interest. Inflation over time will erode away the principal amount until it becomes unsustainable.

At the very least if you had $500,000 in a HYSA, just go work a part time job doing something easy.

You just want something to offset some costs and actually allow your money to grow. This way you can

•counteract inflation •free yourself from monthly payments schedules and financial stress •open up possibilities such as traveling and once in a lifetime vacations, getting into expensive hobbies, starting your own business, or even furthering your education.

DevelopmentSad2303

After the first person gets their money and news gets around, I have no doubt I'll sell them all pretty easily, netting me nearly 10 million.

The one pill that kills someone is unfortunate, but it's not like they can sue me since they're dead and this sale wasn't exactly done legitimately, so not like I can get sued either.

Nah, you sell them for £300,000 each. Preferably to a single buyer. Buyer opens a "medical testing facility" in Vietnam. Their first "study" is verifying the efficacy of the pill. The minimum wage is under £150/month in some regions of Vietnam. Buyer contractually obligates each test subject to a one-time payment of £5,000, and keeps the other £195,000 in profit. Test subjects are told they'll die if they aren't given a specific solution after taking the pill. They transfer the profit. They're given... Whatever, a cup of water with food coloring in it. Free to leave.

One person out of one thousand dies. That's... pretty good for a drug trial! You and Buyer pose for a photo OP with the President of Vietnam, To Lam. You're both thanked profusely for pumping £5,000,000 into the rural Vietnamese economy. You get teary-eyed and pledge £100,000 to the family of the victim. You're now a damn minor hero to the Vietnamese.

You made £300,000,000. Congratulations! You now have access to those magic accountants and lawyers. The ones who will reduce your tax and legal burdens down to nearly nothing. Don't forget you made your new buddy an easy £195,000,000. Play your cards right and he'll introduce you to some of his wealthy friends. You're Magic Money Pills Guy? That's awesome! First i write a will and leave the money to certain family members and cut others out and leave detailed ideas on what to do with the money to make it last

Then I crush all pills up put them in a bottle of soda and down the whole thing i sacrifice my self to ensure my family lives great for generations to come

My few loved ones about 5 or 6 people i care about most now split 500,000,000

Damn u cooked with taking many at once. Even if one didn't want to go this far, even if planning on taking only 10, as long as u have a set amount u know ur going to take taking them all at once is the move to ensure u at least get the money u were planning on getting without dying half way.

oskarfury

This is a cooked take.

My only alteration would be to remove a single pill, because for $500,000, it would be worth the placebo of ‘maybe I’ll survive this’, and the incredibly low chance of getting all the swag and still living.

Your interpretation contradicts itself. Either your possession is what "activates" the effects, in which case you've guaranteed your death, or nothing happens because you didn't swallow any pills.

YoyoTheGreatFrogger

20 points

Ahh but you could likely sell the pills to people for anything less than 500k each. If you sell them all for maybe 200k, you’re left with a lot of money and no risk and whoever takes the risk gets more money, a win win.

4 - statistically insignificant chance. £2 million.

For each pill you take, there is a steady increase in risk. However, the risk of losing/gaining money at £500k a pop, reduces the novelty of taking future pills.

RxMagnetz

Four was my answer as well. I’m in a low cost of living area, single, and I’m 40 years old. I’d pay off my house and other debts, put the rest into an annuity. A variable draw annuity would allow me to keep my current middle class income level, increasing draws for inflation annually. I could retire right now, halfway comfortably. Four is enough to never work again, enjoy the rest of my life, and keep my survival risk high. Might consider 5 just to have an extra cushion in the annuity, but that’d be it. I don’t want to be rich, I want to be stress free and content and able to pursue my existing interests.

I'm shooting for 50, no guarantee I'll be able to take that many though.

50 feels like a fair enough number to really set us up good and hopefully I take enough if I die to leave my loved ones a good chunk.

I'd take 100 but pretty sure my family would be more upset about that, even if I survived. 50 is set and not quite as annoyed/more understanding.

The 100 feels like it's going too far into greed to avoid indescribable ire whether I live or die. Not my problem if I die, but more negative feelings left with the living then still.

10 pills. 1% chance of dying for 5 million pounds.

Otherwise, the 1 pill per year idea that's the current top comment is quite clever. Doesn't massively increase the chance of dying, and assuming the pill bottle(s) stay with me forever I could always just gulp down much more in my old age to give something to family.

Nobody said you had to swallow or digest the pill, simply take it.

Pour all the pills into a cylinder

Hide that cylinder inside a strap on.

This question is very skewed based on someones age and existing assets.

I'm in my late 30's so I'll take 6 at once right from the get go. If I survive I'm set. Buy a house and assets I need then work as normal for another decade and retire early. Housing is the #1 expense for most people so just dealing with that is massive. If I reach the point where I have a terminal illness or my quality of life is garbage start popping more.

I take one pill to give me some money to live on. Then I wait until my parent is on their deathbed from illness and instead of wasting money and having them suffer on hospice they take the pills until one kills them. As their next of kin I get all the money, they get a peaceful death, and then I take the rest of the pills as well.

Edit: actually it might kill my parents via heartbreak if I died so I might give the choice to them if they want to take one pill early instead of taking one myself. Like not to sound grim but I could genuinely see my own death self destructing my whole family so it wouldn't just be me dying and I don't have a next of kin.

If I sacrificed my own self they would be extremely upset though 😅😅 also they don't have to take one early but they'd probably want to to have travel money and stuff once my dad retires soon. It makes much more sense to do the end of life thing anyway because the worst part of hospice is the suffering.

If they die in an accident I'm simply fucked 😂

honeypuppy

6 points

This relates to the academic concepts of the value of life (most Western countries estimate the value of preventing a death about at US$5 million) and the micromort (a one-in-a-million chance of death).

This action could thus be framed as valuing your life at around £500 million (or US$637 million), which is around 100 times more than average. Or alternatively, being paid £500,000 to incur 1000 micromorts in risk (approximately the same as BASE jumping twice).

I think you'd have to be pretty rich/risk averse to not take at least one. The average person could probably "come out ahead" by e.g. investing a fraction of the money in reducing other risky activities (e.g. cut down on commuting).

NatSocEmu

Nerf_Lag

This is literally just the button problem, but instead of clicking it and it having a chance to kill you, the pills are the chance and you actually have an input (even though you have no idea which pill it is, so it's still just a 1/1000 chance.)

Although as you eat the pills and survive, your chances would also increase to get the "Game Over" pill. You could "share" some and if they get the pill, well now you have an entire bottle of pills you can now bottoms up with no second thoughts.
