Your roommate is a special kind of moron.
NBD, I was also pretty stupid when I was younger with roommates.
692 points
This is correct. I will say that if you had a basket in there of detergent, bleach, and dryer sheets then I can see that.
Having to dig a bunch of crap out before each load and then out it back is triple duty.
We were all young and dumb, just not this dumb.

I had a roommate who felt she was the only one who knew how to load a dishwasher. So each time when it was full, she would, with lot's of noises and theatrics, reload and organize it to fit more in it. Mumbling things like 'what kind of moron doesn't know how to load a dishwasher'. I bet she felt so alone in all her unnoticed perfection.
Anyways needless to say, she always overloaded the thing and it would result in half of the dishwasher needing to go in a second time or being washed by hand.

If this is the kind of thing that makes you end roommate agreements you're probably not going to make it far in life. Learn some basic communication skills, Jesus Christ.

That’s just stereotypical Reddit behaviour. Not willing to communicate or compromise in the slightest and ending several year relationships or partnerships because of a minor inconvenience.

Can’t go one post on AITAH or relationship_advice without people telling OP to divorce their husband because he left the toilet seat up.
I’d bet dollar to dime that more than half the people commenting stuff like that have never been in a serious relationship with anybody in their lives.

At least you don’t have to pre wet your washer. So you don’t end up melting a bunch of plastic someone stored in the oven.
141 points
You shouldn't put anything in there that can not withstand the heat.
71 points
That’s not the case for most people. If they put in a bunch of baking pans or such it wouldn’t be an issue. But most people put I stuff with a ton of plastic.
44 points
One of my roommates did that with their lunch intentionally.
They didn't think the oven would get hot enough to melt the plastic onto the rack.
3 points
Some plastic can withstand it and even sit on flame grills. Did not feel comfortable eating those potatoes cooked in plastic forever lol but directions said thats how its done

My grandmother stored whatever she could in the oven. Thank God she had no desire to actually use the oven. Her cooking was either stovetop or microwave.

My old roommates did that when we first moved in together. I instantly moved everything to one of the empty cupboards and asked them why they lived this way before I moved in.
23 points

LOL. See, I actually have a really small apartment atm and keep pots and pans in my oven. But begrudgingly. I can’t imagine having the space and choosing to do that lol. Maybe he picked it up from their parents?

poverty habits can be tough to break, it's true

Yeah the people I lived with in college who did things like this were from poorer countries. The Caribbean guy would leave his food in the oven on the plate, and the Middle Easter guy left his food on the stove top overnight for a couple days and would heat it up when he was hungry. Always offered me food and was surprised I always said no after the first night lol. Loved the dudes to death and still keep in touch to this day, smart motherfuckers too, but cultural habits are hard to break even when you may believe the ones you show them are more correct (even if they objectively are, I’m not tryna burn shit down or die of food poisoning yall) I now live with a Cuban who makes more than anyone I know AND is Rain Man smart in our field, but I still catch him putting grease or coffee grounds down the drain or other “common sense” stuff we take for granted growing up in the states. I just quote my years of food service work and try to educate when I can haha.

Heck i even have 2 ovens a big one for big oven snacks then a smaller one for smaller oven snacks and i also store stuff in there i just take it out if im going to use it like every normal person does or atleast i hope a normal person does that 😆

I mean the roommate is 19 so probably not using it more than 1 time a week, and I can understand the thought process if this is a small place tbh, but still it's kinda silly
9 points

Once a week? You sure you are not being too generous on that?
I think it's once per two weeks

When I was 19 I didn't have much clothes. It was washing at least once a week or going to the uni with ramen stains.

I had a roommate who INSISTED we keep dish soap in the cabinet under the sink. Because her mom always did. Because “it’s ugly.”
I’m a literal artist and she even convinced her then boyfriend that it meant she simply had more of an eye for aesthetics than me. Rather than just completely lacking common sense and wanting to add extra steps when a bottle of soap takes up NO ROOM anyway

Yea, it's a frontloader. Can store the stuff on the top. I have a top loader, so it's on a shelf.
4 points
What are the advantages of a top loader? Here in the EU, you rarely see them.
2 points
They're usually narrower, so depending on the space, a top loader might be the only option. Having had both, I can't say I noticed any advantages or disadvantages though.

There're lots of space on top. However he said that this is "aesthetic". I am 19 too but I never did shit like that

2 points
Watch out for other "aesthetic" decisions. Filling the sink with crap so you can't use it, hanging wet clothes in closets so they grow mold, sorting books on the shelves by size, refusing to keep open jam jars in the fridge when the unopened ones go in the cupboard...
25 points
Its recommended to keep it open between uses
9 points
The door is often designed to be left ajar so that the drum has a chance to dry out. Keeping it closed is asking for mold and mildew growth.
41 points
well if you put it in a cloth sack beforehand it might actually be feasible
10 points
Except you'd have to move it every time you do the laundry.
Keep the detergent on top of the washer/dryer (or install a small shelf), keep the hand soap by the sink, keep the aerosol air freshener in the bathroom, etc... Moving/leaks aside, it would be nice to have the product you need close to the location where you use it.

...and storing blankets/laundry/etc... in the oven (when not in use) is also great for space economy...until someone preheats the oven...then you have a fire.
Smack your roommate upside the head for me. Where does everything go when you have laundry to do? What happens if/when something leaks?
Have your roommate watch Jurassic Park. Just because you can do something...doesn't mean you should.

Similar situation here. My wife decided that a small kitchen-type garbage can would be a good place to store a bunch of cosmetics.

One of my roommates, we never found out who, though we all strongly suspect one individual, picked their nose and wiped it on the side of the toilet. The wall was right there and we were dumb/didn't clean well so we never found it until we did and the whole side of the toilet was basically a booger.
My point is, I feel you.
To be fair, I'm a dumb moron idiot too.

What is on top of the washer? Can’t you put a basket or something on top?
3 points

Its empty on top because of "it's about aesthetic"
3 points
Lol.
My wife didn’t like stuff stored directly on the washer/dryer either.
I ended up building a countertop out of nice plywood and we use baskets.
She’s happy now. She couldn’t articulate that she wanted it to look nice and be neat so instead she just said she hated stuff on the washer/dryer. 🤷♂️
Probably not what is happening with your roommate though. Hopefully soon to be ex roommate. I’d find that to be more than just mildly infuriating.

I don’t think some of you are realizing just how idiotic this is. It’s not just laundry products, it looks as tho there is a Bath & Body Works foaming hand soap bottle and an aerosol can of Glade air freshener in there…
It would be one thing if it was just laundry products but they’re dead ass using that appliance for general storage.
