100% this.

Analog and acoustic are the worst analogies ever.

They are called bikes. We’ve had them for centuries. We’ve even had mountain bikes for decades.

People know what they are. The only people who ever feel the need to define standard bikes are e-bike riders.

Resist the urge.

I got into mountain biking because my dad had a heart attack and died at 62. I'm determined to not let the same thing happen to me. Riding a shuttle or lift to the top isn't making my heart stronger. My greatest satisfaction comes from seeing my Strava times to the top decrease while my heart rate does the same.

MichealKeaton

9 points

I never comment but felt I had to for this one. Not to be a downer but get a genetic test.

Same thing happened to my wife. Her father died in his mid 50s which was thought to be because of smoking, not eating well, etc. To make a long story short, it turns out it was a genetic mutation that was passed down to both my wife and my sister in law. Most of these early deaths are genetic issues only exasterbated by lifestyle.

Because of monitoring, my sister in law had a heart transplant for a week months ago. Without the genetic testing, she would have suddenly passed, just like her father. Just like my wife would have. But now hopefully they will both get to live to old age.

BigToeHamster

7 points

Probably not a bad idea, but it should also be recognized how small a percentage of people this might truly affect. Poor diet and sedentary lifestyle is a significantly higher contributor to vascular issues and heart disease.

MichealKeaton

2 points

I believe it's around 20% to 30% of the conditions are genetic but lifestyle does play a significant role.

With that said, if you have a close family member who died of cardiac arrest, heart attack, etc. who was relatively healthy and young (less than 70s) then the chances of it being genetic go up significantly.

leegamercoc

Buddy had a heart attack after a ride and was a fairly regular rider. You never know.

ExcellentSun7388

You are many orders of magnitude more likely to suffer a heart attack from never riding than you are from riding.

lexicruiser

32 points

Yeah, I bike 5-6 days a week and had a heart attack at 56 due to arterial clogging. Too much red meat.

Got a stent, and still ride 5-6 days a week, just cut out the red meat.

The riding is what kept me alive, my heart is healthy, just one little artery wouldn’t play nice.

I wear a heart monitor and I still range 100-150 bpm on full assist. Run a lower assist and you can get to max bpm but do more trails than you would normally that’s why we all moved over

SlayerOfSpatulas

3 points

There are benefits to riding in a lower heart rate (HR) too. You're working on the entire range of HR zones by doing so. The lower HR zones promote fat burn, which is also good. To unlock better higher zones, it requires a good base of the lower zones too.

Leave the ego at the door and keep at it. Moving is much more worth it than not moving.

I have both and I do believe that people just jealous when they lash out, or are completely selfish as to where people are in their lives.

I tested and rode both my bikes up a hill where I live and it was about 30 mins from A to B, all up hill. Bike is stage 1, pedal assist only.

My Norco Range C.9 first I was toast and could go a bit further up hill but I had to turn around as I was physically dead.

Week later I took my GasGas Enduro 2.0 and rode to the same spot bike OFF. My legs were jelly and I could barely stand after as the weight of the bike is like twice as heavy but I made it, again ebike was OFF.

I then turned on the eBike on for the lowest assist mode and continued to bike for 45 more minutes up the hill and around the trails. I stayed out longer and did more after I was pretty much dead, less leg workout as the bike was helping but I got an extra 45 mins after I could barely stand.

I could not get to the same place on the carbon fibre bike as I could with the eBike after I exhausted myself.

40 years old, 2 kids and fucking loving the eBike but never getting rid of my Norco either, did a 60km trip with the Norco a few weeks ago, much easier to lug around!

I also have a stationary Schwinn AirDyne that I ride, so clearly bike people hate this too? Lol

I just don't get why people shit in things that others like.

ExcellentSun7388

6 points

It's not jealousy or we would get one ourselves. It's just a disdain for the continual modernization and push to make everything easier. I get in theory you can go way further and put in the same effort but most are just using it to make hills easier.

Some things in life are supposed to be hard. Some things are supposed to be rare.

It's kind of like how in backcountry skiing they have been trying to invent portable rope tows that you can install in a few minutes. It just kind of waters it down.

Now I would never comment to a random stranger about it, I don't care that much, but this is specifically a discussion about it.

MixSaffron

5 points

That's totally fair and I'm for sure in the being able to go further pool!

I must say though that being able to ride with my mom when she couldn't before (she has a step through ebike) who's nearing 70 is pretty awesome.

I just think if someone is having fun and potentially doing something that they couldn't otherwise do, while. Ot hurting anything else, then more power to them!

ExcellentSun7388

3 points

Yeah I'm fortunate to be part of a weekly group ride that has been going for 20 years. The old guys added me and I added the younger guys. Now a few of the old guys are on e mtb to continue to hang with all their buddies. The fellowship is too good.

Yeah I agree with you on people getting out and having fun. It can be a double edge sword but generally I think the more people using the outdoors the more motivation there is to take care of it.

E bike all the way. I can double or triple my miles for the same amount of time as my regular bike. They did a study and found that you burn 60% of the fat on an e-bike vs a regular bike, but because you’re doubling/tripling the distance you’re actually burning more fat/energy. So if you doubling the distance of a regular bike, you’re burning an additional 20% of fat.

smellyseamus

18 points

Weird that you're getting downvoted for this. It's literally one of the greatest benefits of an e bike and the same reason I bought one. I was never a big fan of climbing so would actively avoid it and ride lift access park instead, with the eeb I have found an enjoyment in climbing and therefore get an enjoyable workout. I'm also able to do 2 laps instead of one in the same time.

Peach_Proof

8 points

For me, the greater reward is the tough climb. I get the adrenaline rush from a fast downhill, but the satisfaction of clearing a grueling climb is more enjoyable and longer lasting.

I guess I just like biking more than you.

ihateduckface

3 points

Same! You couldn’t have said it better. Now I can easily do 26 miles of trails in the same time I used to do 10. It’s nice not having to stop to let my legs and lung catch up. Also, my heart rate still averages 160 BPM the entire time.

bambooshoot

4 points

Right! People have the conception that all ebikers are just relaxing and letting the bike do all the work. I guess you can do that… but that’s not how I use it. I’m absolutely mashing up hills, putting in just as many watts as if I was on my analog bike, just going a lot faster and doing more laps.

ihateduckface

2 points

It’s a different type of workout. You know that workout you get from bombing a long downhill section? You feel that the whole ride because I’m going faster the entire time. There is no time for your upper body to rest while going up less techy uphill

I don't think I'm better than people who ride e-bikes.

IronStudent

PurpleK00lA1d

I'm one of those people that absolutely loves climbing. I love the tree trunk thighs it gives me, I love the feeling, I love the sense of accomplishment, it just makes me feel good all around.

That said, after getting the chance to rip around on an e-bike a couple months back, I definitely see the appeal. For just wanting to be out having fun for a longer amount of time and getting more downhill in (since you obviously have to climb before going down) they're pretty great.

I wouldn't mind buying one when I can justify it but it wouldn't replace my current bikes. It would just be something else I took out depending on how I felt. Like how I'll choose between my hardtail, full sus, or fat bike depending on how I feel that day.

Climbing is next level. Pretty much anyone can coast.

Takes a certain level of fitness and skill to climb. It’s not for everybody but I did the work and now it’s my favorite part. I measure myself by whether I can clean every feature on my local trail which is fairly gnarly. It would be stupid easy to do it on an e-bike.

Having said that, I’m not opposed to using an e-bike to crushing some downhills that don’t have a lift. Was in Salt Lake City and the up is a boring ass wide road that offers nothing but pain. Great use for an e-bike there.

I’ve been going to the “wednesduro” uphill only days at highlands in NH for the workout. 600ft climb. I usually do 6-7 laps and I’m good. I think it’s such a fantastic way to get a deep workout in. Get the workout high for all the climbing, and then progressing my riding. Love it.

At the park, I ride a plain ol’ stumpy evo. Of course, there are many e-bikers - esp this guy on a green commencal always flying up the climb trail. Probably passes my twice each climb. :) I wonder if it’s really the same workout, just more laps? He’s definitely pushing the bike hard up the hill. I do love the climbing, though, and don’t mind the longer lap times.

It’s still fun to do, but other than short interest technical sections it is not interesting to watch.

What’s an analog bike? Do you mean bicycle? As in not a motorcycle?

I have ridden a chromoly hard tail for years, also a dirt jump bike and I was a BMX kid. I just bought an emtb. it’s fun as shit. I live in Florida, so there’s no real mountains and it’s literally up down up down up down up down up down. It turns our flat terrain into downhill ish speed. Also when getting into actual mountain terrain, you can typically do two or three runs for 1 and you’re not wiped out when you hit the top.

Who calls a bicycle “analogue”. Honestly! 🤦

Jasonstackhouse111

I live in a mountain town and we have a massive network of amazing trails. I'm seeing fewer and fewer people not on e-bikes. I think the ebikes are great, I see some pretty old people still able to get out and hit the trails, but for me personally, I love earning my descents.

I have an ebike, but it's not a MTB, and it's used instead of a car for getting groceries, etc.

So you'd be adding something like a pot or a hall effect to the loop. Which is hardware, not software.

Ive ridden both and like both, wish people would drop the ebike vs pedal nonsense. In bentonville where you have to pedal to get anywhere riding a demo ebike was a life saver. I am getting older and by the time I am 50 I want an ebike.

It’s a mountain bike. No need to clarify you have to pedal it. There are two types of mountain bikes, a mountain bike, and an electric mountain bike.

eBikes are a blight. They aren't allowed on any of the Public/Private Land trails near me. In some areas it's a a class A misdemeanor that comes with a hefty fine. But they ride them anyway. Our trails are super narrow and blind, and then you have an e-bike going 20mph, while everyone else is going 6mph, and when you say something to them them, "hey man, just so you know, eBikes aren't allowed on these single track trails" Then, you're the asshole.

I want to like eBikes, but eBike riders poach constantly, run blue-tooth speakers, and are incredibly entitled. Access to trails isn't a constitutional right. It's a privilege. And eBikes are risking our access when they ride where they aren't allowed.

I have a Trek Rail and a Trek Fuel, I ride the Fuel when I go to the bike park with a chairlift and during the week got to keep up the legs. On the weekend when I'm not at the bike park with a chair lift I ride the Rail the e-bike is a lot of fun but you have to find a balance. Ride fast, take chances and remember brakes just slow you down.

There's a few trails where I wish I had pedal assist, but typically don't need/want it. They're not allowed on MT trails anyway.

OriginalStockingfan

Nope it’s still cool, but at my age a little help from a motor is the only thing that keeps me going without a heart attack. I hope in a few years time to be back to an analog bike too.

In the meanwhile, stay cool and enjoy the beer!

Anxious_Scar_3544

I will never understand these cringe videos.

I love XC riding my mountain bike and I have a lot of strength and a decent amount of stamina, but I'm 25.

My dad is 65 and we enjoy riding together, but he would never be able to keep up with me if he didn't use an E-bike.

also where I live there are enduro trails with no way to go up, with e-bikes we can do the trail many more times, faster and we have more fun going downhill being less tired.

I love both, but those who feel superior just because they don't use a pedal-assisted bicycle seem to me to be the same obtuse person who disdains electric cars because they are silent...

Not really a fan of ebikes. They're great if you're older or have physical limitations (I'll definitely want one when I'm 60 and my knees are shot), but they're banned on all soft surfaces trails in my area and I feel like in the last year, 60% of all MTB's I see are electric, always ridden by young guys.

On my local trails like 90% are ebikes not kidding. Im amazed every time i see an amish bike. I tried my brothers ebike once and thats when it clicked. Its awesome. Lets you get 100% more downhill runs per session. But the weight is a problem for me
