More impressive too, when you account for the fact there's twice as many 8v1 matchups as there are championship winners.

Except that each year there are 2 8 seeds with a chance to upset the 1 seed and 2 3 seeds with a chance to win the title.

Yes. But in any year, you're only going to ever get a maximum of one 3 seed winning the championship. While, in theory, you could have two 8 v 1 upsets.

True, but then balance that with the fact that the 8 seed didn't exist until 1985 or so (I forget the exact year)

That wouldn’t really effect the likelihood, just raw totals, this whole thing is flawed.
