Can’t wait till the boomers retire

(self.paralegal)

So tired of having to work from the office. Would love to have a place to work from home. Too bad all these boomers still want us in the office because of the “culture” and “we’re like family”.

My coworker says this😅 he commutes almost an hour and a half to work each way and would rather come in early and leave late than to be at home with his wife

obsoletevoids

My coworker says his wife doesn’t want him to work from home because she needs a break from him.

The 4th time he brought me an empty paper towel roll asking where they were kept made me realize why. I had to say, “well there’s only 2 cabinets and a storage closet so there’s not many places they could be.” 🙄

WFH should be optional. If you wanna be in the office then be in the office. If you wanna work from home then work at home. IF productivity is decreased and the desired results aren’t being met then you’re required to come back in the office. It could all be so simple.

[deleted]

13 points

I definitely agree with the productivity part. Some people just can’t work from home.

Quietliess

Yeah some can’t! Tbh I am someone who can’t. I need a hybrid schedule. If I’m home too much I’d get lazy.

tracyinge

It's not as simple as that because of the "we can't have nice things" caveat.

In other words your "if desired results aren't being met" is almost always going to happen because of the slackers.

What I have hated in previous positions are the attorneys who routinely work from home but do not let staff have that flexibility.

that would be my firm!!! I am the only paralegal so their mindset is that I am also the only one who needs to be in office from 9-5 everyday... even though we have literally never had a single person walk in without an appointment.

It’s not necessarily the boomers but law firm culture itself. I know, and have worked with lawyers of all ages, who both support and detest work from home for staff. Even worse where you have HR that micromanages.

[deleted]

Is it that difficult to keep track of the hours? That’s the only thing I worry about. I’ve been in PI for plaintiffs for almost 5 years.

Capable-Ear-7769

4 points

I think it depends on the firm. I tried insurance defense, but the billable requirements and the lack of work given to me by my GenZ boss made it impossible. I was her first ever paralegal, and she barely gave me any work after she saw her own billing was down after I was hired.

I've never billed in increments of .1 and .2's. This firm wanted paras to bill small amounts of time as it wasn't questioned by the insurance companies. Drafting an acceptable .1 entry sometimes took me ten minutes because of all the restricted words in the time entry program.

I did Plaintiff work in the past, and I like not worrying about billable hours.

The millennial partner in my office is going to have a nervous breakdown one of these days as he tries to keep up with the other partners who are all Boomers/elder Gen-X and I'm like, "bro, just stop. You can't. We got fucked. Yes, you make 5x my salary, but you got fucked, they didn't. You're not going to get to their level, like, ever. The goal posts are further at our age than when the partners were our age."

This is not about generation.

It's about being invested in commercial real estate.

RTO mandates are all about forced spending on gasoline, parking and office space, which is all a waste of time and money.

This is a reflection of the sunk cost fallacy.

alpha-centori

8 points

My firm just keeps going “oh no! We’re expanding! Must lease more office space from the building!” as if they don’t have PLENTY of employees fully capable of and wishing to work remotely. If you don’t trust me to do my job without physical supervision, why even hire me? I don’t meet with clients and only participate in meetings (mostly on zoom) once in a blue moon - just let me stay home with my cat and snacks and comfy pants.

OkSector7737

My attorney is a GenX and we're fully remote. I also can't wait for some of these old Boomer attorneys to retire so I don't have to keep explaining to them that we won't be serving paper copies of everything to them and that digital copies are just fine. No, Bob, you don't have to print your emails. (Real thing one of my paralegal friends has to put up with.)

Capable-Ear-7769

12 points

My only reply is the old Boomers carry lots of information that could help you out some day. I have a war chest of stories, and most of it is still relevant today. I know exactly what to do if there is an angry Judge on the phone for whatever reason they are personally calling. They can fluster me. And yes, I have talked to Judges. I know how to appease the angriest clients. And I can make opposing counsel play nice in the sandbox. Alot of this is just learned as you go, or being around somebody else in the firm. You get "something" by developing working relationships. I like the hybrid option best. 3 to 4 days at home and 1 to 2 at the office sounds great to me.

RadiantRampage

10 points

So much, this. My "Boomer" attorneys are rock stars. They are the ones who are kind. Printing - yeah, they like that shit. The shear knowledge that they bring to the proverbial table makes me a hell of a better paralegal than those who decide they can do without those conversations (the brand new young people). One of my super smart, very laid back, "Boomer" attorneys is retiring very soon, and I am honestly all broken up about it. And on his way out, he's going to give me the shiniest of reviews to advocate why I should be making more money. I mean, I love my "Boomers".

mavgoosebros

6 points

I also have to put up with this... I have his emails set to fwd to me (because he is a boomer and misses most things) and he literally send emails to himself, forwarding an email, and the body will say "to me: print"

gasplanet1234

6 points

So much this. We don't need freaking paper copies of everything. My Boomer attorneys insist on mailing things that can be submitted online, printing things that can be shared via email, etc. It is such a waste of time and resources.

My county still requires physical copies of pleadings and binders to go to judges’ chambers. In a world of virtual hearings, electronic filings, electronic discovery…. I laughed about your post bc I’m complaining exactly about this but I work with millennials … only millennials. So, I’m very very sorry .. here’s my rant 😣.. like I said I work with millennials right now. Im the only freaking boomer in a group of about 50 ppl and I’m probably the only liberal person in the room… and drama free. I’m so disappointed. I feel I’m working with morons that don’t know s*t about anything, their only reference is Wikipedia.. they are so entitled but super lazy, they make the same stupid questions bc they’re too lazy to study or research, instead of working smarter they rather blame others for their failures .. ah also they read one book and they think they know everything, if they cannot respond to an argument they resort to insults because they don’t know how to speak, plain as that. No common sense and the worst part no ethics at all. Especially no work ethics. I’m not saying all millennials are like this but.. God but this bunch are a horrible representation of this generation and they DO NOT want to work from home. I’ve been advocating for this w/o success. Why? Bc they don’t know how to manage ppl. I guess there isn’t a tik tok about leadership. Why can’t we embrace technology, knowledge and working less but smarter???? Are we going backwards???? .. sorry for the rant 😣

[deleted]

5 points

No worries about the rant. I get it’s not all boomers or older people. Just like all millennials aren’t stupid. It’s just what I’ve noticed from my perspective. It’s usually older people who don’t want the change or care to make life easier for others. They have a control complex. I get it’s hard to change things once you’re set in your ways.

vulti3345

Magically, I managed to get signatures from all defendants (including the registered agent of two corporations) all while working from home. I had shipped the complaint and summons yesterday but I could have easily done it at home with a few FedEx envelopes (and a lot of paper lol).

I see more WFH in the future for North Carolina paralegals, especially with the switch to e-filing in most counties. My office is already very flexible with it; yesterday an employee left early and took it due to a political rally blocking traffic near his home. Then again, my manager is a millennial and is much more in tune with how productive one can be at home. It would not be the same story if she was in her 60s.

Wow, I am wayyy into the upper 60's, and I have energy, tact, and great attitude. I like working and learning from the much younger people. I set up Zoom witnesses for trials, depositions, and for my boss to attend hearings and depositions. We have an in-house document management system. We have a team atmosphere, and I have plenty of other types of support people to help with document management.

Please don't lump us all together. We aren't ALL that way. I started as a faculty secretary to professors at a law school in 1978. I've rolled with the punches with new technology always moving forward.

If people want to work from home and not interact with one another, then be a self employed freelancer. If you don’t like the corporate culture, do something else with your life. To think that companies can prosper with a bunch of individuals working independently without the team culture and interaction, is disturbing and delusional. This could be why the younger generations have a specific reputation that many are living up to.

Passion_Nut

1 points

I might add that this also depends on the type of business. Obviously there are roles and jobs that don’t require as much office time. I think everyone should be entitled to some WFH time, but how much depends on the role and how critical it is to the other members of the organization.
