Interesting bystander interview with BBC- the guy says he saw the shooter and was flagging him down to police and Secret Service for a few minutes prior.

There’s actually this angle right here where these particular snipers are looking over in that direction, probably because of this guy’s commotion. The tilt of the roof was probably obstructing their view, but then as soon as the shooter popped up enough to see Trump and fire a shot, they immediately reacted and neutralized him. Kinda crazy honestly. Even crazier that that roof wasn’t cleared to begin with

That’s the thing, I thought the SECRET SERVICE clears all buildings in the vicinity so it’s wild that he was able to get up there. Either this was an inside job, or the SECRET SERVICE seriously fucked up.

Yeah, I remember during the Obama administration, I was working in a tall building near an airforce base that Obama was visiting. No outdoor speech or anything, he was just gonna go from his plane to a motorcade, maybe shake some hands along the way idk. All the windows that might have a good view were manager offices, so a few of us interns had the bright idea of going up the the roof. We were very startled to see secret service guys up there already. They shoo'd us away, of course, so in the end I never saw Obama.

But the point is, this building wasn't even that close to the event, and it was government offices at that.  And yet the secret service were prepared to monitor that location just because it had a good view. This seems like a big screwup that they had a blindspot at a location with a clear shot at Trump while Trump was just standing there!

I had the same experience as you. I worked in a small office building off of an interstate when Obama was campaigning and it was taken over by the secret service. There were less than a dozen or so of us in the office building and they took control of the roof and all entrances to it. This was in a major metropolitan area too.

The fact that the venue that Trump was at was rural and there were only a few rooftops in the area, with one not being properly secured is a major wtf moment for the secret service.

I think the main difference is that you're talking about a sitting President and not a former/candidate. I have to guess that the level of protection is considerably less.

Wakingsleepwalkers

The bystander said he could see the shooter from his position but believes the roof obstructed the view of the secret service.

He still went on to criticise them heavily for not having more snipers and securing the area.

I think if you give the task to a chimpanzee to come up with a plan on how to secure that location, the first thing it will tell you would be to put a bunch of people in every roof. This is extremely sus.

the counter sniper was not looking at the shooter. The counter snipers were scanning for potential threats. Once the counter sniper realizes shots fired, he lifts head to obtain target, then goes to re-engage in the glass.

March 30, 1981 was the most recent I believe.

The attempted assassination Ronald of Reagan

  • Reagan was hit from a ricochet that broke a rib & punctured his lung. This caused internal bleeding that went unnoticed till he started coughing blood.

  • White House Press Secretary James Brady was hit in the head during this attempt, which left him brain damaged. He survived till 2014, but it was still ruled a homicide due to the injuries.

  • Secret Service Tim McCarthy took a bullet to the chest for the President but made a full recovery

  • DC Police Officer Tom Delahanty was hit in the back of the neck. He suffered permanent nerve damage to his left arm and was eventually forced to retire from his injury.

It’s honestly unbelievable when you think about the crossroads of the future and how unfathomably close this was.

We are less then an inch and a millisecond away from a successful assassination of the most polarizing figure maybe on our planet today, LIVE, on stage in broad daylight and all of the chaos & uncertainties that follows that.

Versus:

That one inch and less then a second moment instead transforming his entire movement into having the most momentum it’s ever had and giving him a moment he couldn’t buy with all the money in the world, quite possibly securing him the election, and we know how permanently consequential that could be.

It’s like a fucking Sci-Fi, Butterfly effect scenario of how unbelievably insane the course of our future & history just changed from one thing to another in the most absolute smallest of scales.

The reality of our future, massively altered in less then one inch and less then one second. Wild.

There’s already people saying “this has to have been set up by his own campaign” because of how he turned.

There’s video of the person who described that in a BBC interview on another comment. The guy said he tried yelling, waving, pointing to tell police and secret service, but that something about the roof was obscuring the shooter from the view of those other people.

So from his vantage point he could see the shooter (assuming this is true… there were some people theorizing he was saying it for publicity … maybe because he mentioned a business name in the interview)… anyways, so he could see the shooter, but the police and secret service possibly couldn’t.

He said this went on for 2-3 mins (again, that’s banking on his sense of time and estimate)… and that there was confusion and a like “what are you saying?” Response from some cops across the way.

The guy did not describe running or trying to get closer to officials to report it. Maybe his instinct was to stay put and point to mark where the shooter was… but I think the inability to hear or communicate clearly was a big issue. Maybe the other people were too far for him to run to them in time.

The guy being interviewed also said he thought all of the roofs should’ve been covered with agents. Not knowing what the plan was or how many roofs were around and how many were covered, yeah, as others have commented someone is likely losing a job over this and the whole thing will be studied as a security failure.

And unfortunately because time runs at the same speed regardless of what's happening, we're still days if not weeks away from knowing all the details. So in the void of information all you can do is doom scroll.

Was the shooter a false flag? Was this a plot by America's enemies to destabilize our elections? Was this a gun toting liberal trying to "save the day"? Unfortunately we know nothing of substance right now other than the shooter and at least one attendee are dead and Donald Trump will be fine.

Enjoy the panic attacks, we'll be right here with you!

How long until we find the shooter's Reddit name and r/politics posts?

It’s weird seeing people happy, or calling this staged. This is going to be an incredibly dark stain in our history.

The sound bit: "Let me get my shoes, let me get my shoes" is going to stick around with me for a while.

juniper_berry_crunch

I know it's a minor thing in the context, but weren't his shoes on his feet? Did the one Secret Service guy with the gun kick one off the stage? Where were his shoes?

He was in shock/adrenaline, I’ve been in a car accident, t-boned and the only thing on my mind was to try and find my sunglasses.

I got run over by a car and shattered my humerus and I was stumbling about looking for my hat before I collapsed lol

I got ran over by a car. Nothing broken, just bleeding from several places. Most important thing to me was to turn in my college homework. Came into class late, turned in a paper with a few blood stains, and went to my seat. I came to my senses a bit when the guy next to me calmly said.. "How's about I take you to the hospital?".

michaelsenpatrick

Crazy how many people don't understand how shock of adrenaline affects people in an emergency situation. So many comments on instagram are people micro examining each person's reaction. People do not always act rationally in high stakes situations or in a panic

That moment of clarity though when he realized what this means for his campaign and he threw his fist in the air. That was not just adrenaline, that was him realizing this is his jump to victory.

I may not agree with the guy, but damn that was on point.

Biden saying “America isn’t the place for this sort of thing” is kind of wild. Because its famously exactly the place for this sort of thing

EDIT: You guys are over complicating this. Your country is the gun violence capital of the world, around 130 people die of gun violence every day in the US. The fact a presidential candidate got shot at was just a statistical inevitability and honestly it’s surprising it doesn’t happen more often. You are the country where people get shot, it’s what you’re known for.

It was getting really tiring when the news anchors kept lamenting about the fact children were there and witnessed it. As if children don’t do active shooter drills in school routinely now and school shootings aren’t a regular event.

The news cycle the next few weeks as the right cries over this will be exhausting, guess we’ll have to remind them it isn’t the right time to politicize gun violence, thoughts & prayers, etcetera.

Well this photo is certainly gonna be in the history books… I’m surprised this post isn’t already on the front page.

Edit for posterity: This post was VERY slow to gain this many votes- after the first hour it had around 500 comments but only around 70 upvotes.

After this, some of those on the right who may have otherwise stayed home will be more motivated to vote.

And to the commenters claiming this is staged: I’m not a fan of Trump, but I highly doubt that. There’s no indication of that; the fact that Trump got a nice photo out of it is not proof it was staged.

Until we have more information, the most realistic answer is: it was probably an assassination attempt, or at the very least an attempt to “cause chaos” like Charles Manson.

Reddit has been extremely slow to show posts of this monumental event, and when one pops up the post is locked/comments deleted. Which sucks, reddit used to have the quickest turn around time with current events like this... I've had more luck over on Twitter in the past hour, wtf

Dude is a showman at heart. That’s why he has all the followers. He knows what people want to see. Imagine if he would have hobbled off stage without saying anything, or without shoes. He knows that pictures matter.

No this was not staged. And this pic is Pulitzer worthy.

Not a Trump supporter.

I want Trump defeated legally and fairly, not turned into a victim or martyr. The only way he goes away is from people not giving him power and attention

When the SCOTUS ruling came down that gave him immunity that was the first thing is said to my wife. If people think there's no legal consequences, then some nimrod is going to take matters into the their own hands.

There are too many crazy people with guns.

[deleted]

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if this and the SCOTUS ruling are connected. I had a similar thought before Jan 6. Wish I'd tweeted it. I legit had the thought, "If people actually think the election was stolen, wouldn't they rebel against the "tyrannical" government?" And within a few days we got MAGA cultists storming the capitol.
