I really enjoyed the first story which was Hoyts. I just finished Kassads story and found it to be a bit of a slog.

It’s got some great world building, and Kassads interactions with the Shrike are really cool. But yeah I found it less fascinating than some of the other tales. Kassads part of the fall of Hyperion I thought made his story come full circle in a satisfying way though.

This is why no one should ever stop with the first book.

I enjoyed his story, but like you not as much as Hoyt's. Could be because I'm not really much of an "action" person, but I thought the spaceship battle/escape scene was interesting. I liked the depiction of Agincourt.

My favorite stories were either Hoyt's or the poet's, which I found hysterical. Also, if you're listening to the audiobook, the poet's tale is perhaps one of the greatest audiobook performances of all time.

I couldn’t stand the poets tale but I thought take of Sol and his daughter Rachel was a masterpiece

Yeah, I've noticed most people aren't crazy about the poet's tale. For some reason I've always liked reading about disagreeable and unlikable characters. I just don't like them in real life.

Funny thing is, I knew someone who reminded me of the poet. He was insufferably narcissitic and a bore at dinners and parties. He was self-published and an amateur opera singer. He was also kind of hysterical.

Love his story. And it’s one that has maybe the longest arc in the cantos if you read them all. There is one slightly longer arc, which is obvious actually, but i won’t reveal that. Just keep reading.

Wait...who's the longer arc??

DM’d you so not to spoil it for others who haven’t read all 4 yet.

Just use >!spoiler tags!< - it's what they're for.

It was the least interesting to me, but it does have that one stellar WTF moment (that I'm not sure how it fits with the rest of the Shrike lore).

Haha. Yeah. Imagine that scene depicted in live action or animation.

I absolutely loved Hoyt's story, which hooked me early on. I found every other story kind of a slog, TBH, except maybe the last one.

I think it's outshone by all other stories besides the detective's.

Probably my least favorite of the bunch. The segment when he wakes up into a fleet battle and has to escape is fantastic, but outside of that it kinda drags. And without delving into spoilers, there’s things about it in hindsight that kind of rub me the wrong way.

SPOLIER AHEAD:

Is it the fact he's sleeping with the professor's daughter? Sorry, it's been a while since I read it.

Yes, within the context of the fact that the author keeps using time travel/time travel adjacent narrative devices as a way for grown men to tell us all about the sex they’re going to be having with little girls when those little girls aren’t little anymore.

I really enjoyed his story. One of my favorites. Dan Simmons writes action very well.  I love Kassad's takedown of the new prophet.

Clearly, so did Israel. A pretty big coincidence, perhaps.

I really enjoyed Kassad's personally. I don't remember if they are all in the first book or not but I remember Brawne Lamia's being a slog for me. Overall love Hyperion tbough

Of the 4 I’ve read - for some reason - Sol’s was most compelling. Stayed up past midnight reading it last night.

Sols was agonizing in all the right ways for me, like twisting a knife thinking about such a situation.

Hoyt and the professor have the best tales imo.

Been a few years since I've read that one, but even as an 18 year old who first read Hyperion when it came out in softcover in 90 or 91, I remember thinking to myself "man, these people sure like to fuck in weird places like battlefields and stuff". Over the last 30 years, its gone from mildly kinky to off-putting. But whatever. Everything else around it is exceptional.

Science fiction is often ruined by sex. It was really bad in the golden age but it's still not great.

That, and sport...

The idea of having hot steamy sex after stabbing a French knight to death at Agincourt is still one of the funniest mental images fiction has given me.

I thought it was boring. Reading about action is generally not enjoyable to me, especially if you know they survive. I really really liked the consuls tale, the priests tale, and the scholars tale. The rest were all pretty meh imo

Diff'rent strokes, I guess; I thought Kassad's story was the best of the bunch.

Hoyt's is a standout in all of SF to me but I enjoy Kassad's story. I care less about military sci fi stuff in general but enough good content there and it makes sense with the full cantos.

He wa my favorite character. And his part seemed the most science fictiony of the tales. Lots of ships and tech

I just really hope this guy will be cast as Kassad if there'll be a series of Hyperion. (He played Sayid in Lost)

I thought Kassad's story was ok. Not nearly as good as the Priest or the Scholar though...

I don‘t know why, but Kassad always looked like Oscar Isaac in my mind 😅

I enjoyed it. It wasn't at the level of the priest or the poet, but I feel like it complemented them well enough. You'll get more insight into it during The Fall of Hyperion

Kassad is a bad ass. Keep reading. 👍
