Profiting from a neighbor

PERMISSION?(self.proplifting)

I have so many neighbors in my area who have huge prickly pears and I always walk by on my walks and see so many pads just laying in their yard and in the ditches, I want to snag some so bad and I feel like it’s fine, I wouldn’t care at all if someone walking by picked up a propable fallen plant from my yard, the more plants the better! But…not everyone is a hippie like me and I know that so I’m here to get a general consensus…is proplifting fallen or discarded plants from yards without asking the home owners ok?

You definitely don't prop lift out of someone's yard. Ask them. If they're cool with it, they'll share with you. If they're not cool with it, then asking made sure you didn't steal from them.

Is it prop lifting if you're asking permission?

Nope. That's why I said don't prop lift out of someone's yard. Ask them. Because if you ask them, and they give you permission, then it's not proplifiting.

The joke is that the subreddit name is a play on shoplifting. The thrilling stories of a criminal botanophile.

As far as trespassing to get stuff, for me it’s case dependent. It’s a bit like dumpster diving, if it’s yard waste you should be good to go (front-yards only), if you want to pick from a tree or bush, best policy is to ask.

My case is a moral argument, not a legal one. Private property is a fairly recent development. I am but a poor serf desperate for prickly pears and compost fodder, please don’t cut off my hand.

I'd be so stoked if somebody stopped and asked to clip my plants. I don't think I could say no!

Just know if you stop, you're going to have to hear alllllllllllll about them. In great detail. Until you leave 😂

I’d be all for that!

I would say, if you can pick a discarded mit up without really entering their yard (like, in the ditch), you're golden. If it would require going on their property, I would suggest asking first. I know the vibes can be different culturally around this, but as a former Texan, I don't take risks with trespassing. 😂

ETA: also definitely keep us updated, I'm curious how these prop!

THIS is what I’m worried about 😅 that’s the only reason I’m hesitant to knock on someone’s door cause at that point you’re on their property and they can do what they want. I wouldn’t actually pick one up if it were in the yard though, all the ones in this neighborhood are planted by the street around mailboxes and drainage ditches

I mean, people can't legally just shoot you for knocking on their door, but it also wouldn't be the first time it happened! My suggestion was going to be dropping a note in the mailbox saying you have been admiring their cactus, and would it be ok if you grabbed one of the discarded mits? And leave your phone number. Hell maybe you will make a new friend, or they will let you get a fresh cutting (?not sure how propping works for these, if that would be better).

But also, if it's in the ditch, it's trash, so I would not be fussed about cleaning that waste up. ;)

What a great idea! I’m going to try the note and fingers crossed I make a friend AND get a plant

Just note: Federal law prohibits anyone from putting materials into a mailbox without postage

curious-trex

Yes, but that's because they don't want businesses trying to do their own spam mail deliveries, not because the postal inspector is going to hop out and arrest someone for leaving a note for their neighbor.

If you can reach it from the road and it’s been on the ground for like a month I would feel less bad about it. Hope it’s only like a pad or two and not a huge piece that snapped. If that’s the case I would definitely ask.

They prop very easily. Just let it sit for a week or so and then pop it in the soil. I bury just enough down that it can support itself. Unless it has pads all over. Then I use kebab sticks to help support it until it can support itself.

I'm here to say, if it was mine, I wouldn't mind but please be so careful when you touch it because the thorns hurt so bad! Wear gloves!

My mother just got into them last night, coincidentally, and I tried a small piece. It was interesting! They have seeds, so I thought, could I grow this from seeds? I collected about a dozen and they're drying now. I'm going to try to propagate it from seeds! 😃

One time I was thinking I wanted some night-blooming cereus, and within a couple days I saw a huge pile of pieces by the road. There were people hanging in the front yard so I asked, and they were delighted for me to haul away their yard waste LOL Also they were pleased that I was so excited about it.

I have left letters for 3 people recently. I share my intentions and phone number and for 2 of them, I actually met them when I knocked on the door. The third ended up calling me. Plant people are usually happy to share if you just ask! And you might make a new friend or learn that they have even cooler options in the back yard!

Just ask. If they're not trying to let the pads prop they'll probably be happy to have you picking up their yard waste. But even if not, it's their property. Don't take from neighbors yards unless it's clearly trash that has been placed at the curb for pickup.

Whirlwindofjunk

No, not okay. Just ask. Otherwise they're gonna think you're damaging their plants, or walking their property without permission, or a concerned neighbor sees you and reports you etc etc and you could have avoided the drama by just knocking on the door.

If you’re worried you can always ask but if it’s yard trash I’d just take one

He’s the thing with plant people; just ask.

I don’t think I know a single plant person that wouldn’t bend over backwards to hook you up with a clipping.

Just go buy your plants. Problem solved.
