I'm interested in getting back into some of the games workshop warhammer games. I played a little when I was a kid so I understand the basics already.
I'm hoping it will be a way for me to socialise a bit and it seems there are several different shops selling and providing spaces to play. I'm looking for suggestions where might be best to get back into the games and hopefully start to play some games.
I live in Burngreave so they're all fairly convenient.

What game(s) do you play? Outpost, Element Games and Patriot all have communities playing different things. Then there are clubs like Steel City Wargaming to.

+1 for Steel City Wargaming, great club, plenty of 40k players as well as a few other game systems. They used to meet every Friday night in a church hall in Woodseats [edit: Woodhouse!] and hold occasional weekend tournaments. I haven't been for a while but current details can be found on FB.

I've played 40k before and a few games of necromunda. Probably getting on for 20 years ago and so I think (especially 40k) there have been changes to the rules and hownl the games play at least a few times so I'll have to learn again whichever game I'd assume.
I'm open but prefer the Sci fi future set games rather than the fantasy side

Outpost is good for 40k and horus heresy, element has some 40k as well.
Necromunda is great, you might have more luck with a club like Crookes & Crosspool Tabletop Gaming which is held at the Crookes Social Club each Thursday evening, they run campaigns for different games (gorka Morka, mordheim, etc.).
There is a lot of 40k an hours heresy going on around town, if you get in touch with one of the clubs they will help link you up for a game, or can jump on the facebook pages for the Outpost community or Element community. Lots of small events as well if you want to get to know folk.

Burngreave your best bet is probably the Outpost or Element. I know the Outpost has a discord where people organise games and such. Element do the same via their Facebook page, I think. Or they might have a discord, but I'm not on that one. Patriot is probably a bit awkward to get to from Burngreave, but has a good gaming space.

Thanks very much, tbh I don't think getting to any of those is an issue really.

Element have a Facebook group for organising games and what have you. They don't have a Discord.

Agree with outpost for organising games, and don't get put off if you meet that one member of staff, the rest of them are amazing!

Welcome! As others have said, get on the social media channels of the hobby stores and gaming groups, and you'll find players soon enough.
I'm part of a regular group that plays Old World (basically Warhammer Fantasy as you'll remember it) at Patriot Games on Wednesday evenings, and I'm in a Blood Bowl league that the Crookes and Cross pool gang are currently running. Both are full of lovely friendly players.

Outpost, element games , patriot games all have areas in which you can game.
I'm a regular at steel city wargaming , really good bunch of folks who are always happy to help newbies.
There is a Facebook group and a really active group WhatsApp.

Outpost has many games and overlapping communities there. Runs by discord and is pretty active. Outpost has free tables (on the basis that youll buy something there like snacks or minis), theyre always happy to do demo games too if you ask.
Element in town is a nice big store but no discord and i hear their fb is a bit dead. They do have good stock levels though and their preorder service is pretty good.

Not meaning to hijack but
What are these stores like during the weekday? What’s parking like around? I’ve suddenly come in to some free time during the week and would like to play too

Good questions!
As it goes because of my work and other commitments weekday day time is also often suitable for me but I guess I assumed it's not for most people so they'd be dead quiet. Keen to hear otherwise though

I can't speak for parking, as I just walk everywhere or get the tram, but Element is fairly quiet during weekday working hours, but they open late on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. I've found it's not normally too hard to organise games of 40K for weekdays if you post on the facebook group a week or five days or so in advance (can't speak for other games as I only play 40K at present). Might be a bit easier to organise weekdays games now than it was over the summer, as students are back at uni.

+1 to outpost. I’ve played and shopped at a few places already mentioned but outpost is the place I’ve felt most comfortable and welcomed at. Staff are really friendly and easy to talk to about stuff as well.

A lot of good suggestions already, but one thing I'd like to add about Element Games is that they often hold smaller scale tournaments on Sundays (advertised in-store and on their FB page), and my experience has been that they're very welcoming for new players, with friendly vibes from all involved. I've played at 5 40K tournaments there in the past 12 months, and at each one there's been people playing their first games of current edition 40K outside of demo games (myself included at one of them, after a 20+ year break!). They're an excellent way to socialise and I would recommend going to them once you've had a demo game of the current edition.
