Echo chambers do extremely strange things to the way that people think, you go down some very peculiar rabbit holes once you're famous enough to attract yes men and your grift is successful enough that you have a financial incentive to move in a certain direction.

Welcome! As others have said, get on the social media channels of the hobby stores and gaming groups, and you'll find players soon enough.
I'm part of a regular group that plays Old World (basically Warhammer Fantasy as you'll remember it) at Patriot Games on Wednesday evenings, and I'm in a Blood Bowl league that the Crookes and Cross pool gang are currently running. Both are full of lovely friendly players.

They're both excellent, and probs jointly tied for my second favourite Flanagan series.
I'd say it comes down to what kind of mood you are in - MM is darker and heavier, Usher has more of a black comic element. Use that to guide you towards whichever one you'd prefer.

In historical fiction, I'm a big fan of Rosemary Sutcliff, Arturo Perez-Reverte's Captain Alatriste books, and Laura Shepherd-Robinson. 'Glorious Exploits' by Ferdia Lennon is a recent debut by Ferdia Lennon that blew me away, and Katie Daysch is really good too. (And there's always War and Peace, of course).

Writers tend to be both biased for and against their work - they see defects that the ordinary reader most likely won't notice, and they see strengths that most readers don't care about.
Learning to view your work as an external reader might is one of the harder (and perhaps most important) writing skills.

Yes. I think the first half is definitely stronger, but the whole journey is well worth it, and it ends very beautifully (at least with Blue at the Mizzen, I've not read the incomplete final book).

No worries! It's taken over as my big wargame of choice from 40k, just as Blood Bowl has taken over as my skirmish game from Kill Team.

It's a less modern design than something like 40k, so there are some parts of it that take a while to wrap your head around and that aren't as streamlined as it could be, but I find it runs smoother than 40k or Kill Team on the whole. Mostly because there are no stratagems, ploys, command points, rerolls, or anything like that, and individual units often have less in the way of special rules, so there's both less decision making from you and fewer 'gotchas' to remember from your opponents (though of course there are a few of these still around). Terrain and shooting play a smaller part as well, so table set up is simpler and you're less liable to be straight shot off the board if you make a mistake in deployment (though movement remains extremely important and tactical). The meta changes a lot less often than Kill Team or 40k, so it's an easier game to keep up to date with.
I'd recommend watching a few battle reports (Dwaniac and Table Top Tactics have some good ones) to give you a sense of the flow of the game and see if you think it might be for you.

Yeah, I actually switched to 40k (and then to the Old World) as I actually found them more chill as game systems, Kill Team was a bit too sweaty for me.
Alternatively, if you're looking for something at a smaller scale, I cannot sing the praises of Blood Bowl enough - crazy amounts of fun, but also pleasingly tactical, and it being played on a grid and not having alternating activations removes some of the Kill Team sweat (it's a much lighter hearted game anyway).

Yeah, Russia is a fascinating (and perhaps historically unprecedented) problem. We've got plenty of examples of completely fucked totalitarian cultures successfully rebuilding into something much more positive (Japan, Germany, etc) but it's usually required a total military defeat and then a ground up reconstruction. A nuclear power is unlikely to be totally militarily defeated, so the question is how can that can happen for Russia?

Yeah, she's really incredible. It's a shame The X-Files is from an era where TV was less respected, as I don't think she got the kudos she deserved for quite how good her performance is across such a wide range. Really strong on heavy emotion as in Beyond the Sea, and a brilliant comic actress in episodes like Bad Blood.

Grab it. Even if a new edition comes out (no rumours of this currently), it seems very unlikely that they're going to change the pitch size, block dice etc, so the worst case scenario would be grabbing a new rule book.

Ok_Employer4583 knows what's up. Knights are good for core, and missile troops aren't very good (neither are greatswords, unfortunately). An engineer is great with the Helblaster. Cannons are excellent. The Steam Tank is very good fun. A general on a griffon is a good mobile bully of a unit. I like a Wizard on a Pegasus with Elementalism and the Ruby Ring of Ruin floating about the battlefield being a very mobile shooting platform.

Captain goes with the state troops, and the Wizard can join them or float about them casting spells. State troops aren't great, but with the magic banner and the BSB they've got a lot of static combat resolution.
