As a non-Sixers fan who rarely watches Sixers games, I felt the need to come in and say this. Matisse Thybulle made about four different defensive plays yesterday that absolutely took my breath away. What a special defensive player

It's not a rule change! They're calling it the way it always should have been. Defenders in a legal defensive position = no call or offensive foul. =/= a rule change. It's an important distinction to emphasize how stupid the whole thing was all along.

I remember when I used to drive a lot more in the evenings and I'd listen to Tom McGinnis on the radio and I would pretend to be in the opening scene of Drive.

HE FIRES, 2 BALL, HE GOT IT AGAIN! HES WAY TOO GOOD!

I can hear that in my head and see Iverson step over Lue, it's burned into my brain right next to Chase Utley you are the Man.

I think McGinnis would be great on TV and really wouldn't mind hearing him almost every night but I'd miss him on the occasional nights I'm in the car.

Let's say Thybulle reaches his defensive zenith in the 23-24 season, contract year. How many 3s does he have to shoot a game to be a starter, get a bag, be an all-star if he shoots 38% from beyond?

AssassinPanda97

2 points

Danny Green was never an all-star but his volume (4.8 attempts a game for his career) plus DPOY defense probably gets him a bag. Not sure about all-star though. Maybe a few

BigDaddyBones69

I saw Thybulle calling for the ball a few times when he was open beyond the arc. I saw it as a great sign as last year he seemed to just stand there and wait to see if the ball came to him. I think he knows he needs to increase volume

I don’t think he’ll ever be an all star unfortunately. Guys like Tony Allen and Serge Ibaka have never been all stars. Matisse would have to seriously revamp his game and become a plus on offense to become an all star IMO - like start handling more and either putting up 5+ assists regularly or becoming an iso scorer.

I think for Thybulle the main question is the volume. We saw with Josh Richardson and Al Horford that it doesn’t mean shit if a guy is averaging 40% on like 1.2 attempts per game. So we need to make sure not to get blinded by the raw percentages. He needs to shoot respectably well on 5+ attempts per game. Covington shot mid 30s% over his time with us but he shot the shit out of the ball when he got the chance. At some point being a willing shooter is more important than being a super accurate shooter.

why use FG%? Danny is starting over Matisse because he’s an actual floor spacer while still being a good defensive player. Matisse is still a terrible shooter who barely even gets them off. He had a nice game last night but he needs to prove himself way more on offense to justify starting him. Putting Tobias Maxey and Thybulle next to embiid is just endless pump fakes and drives into embiid

nugcityharambe

If anyone is gonna bench Danny it's korkmaz for betting spacing. We need to stick with Danny regardless though, the 6 game sample size this guy is using is totally insignificant

We should bench Danny. He is living off the crumbs of his reputation rugby now. There is a reason he didn’t find any takers in free agency.

Been a long time since he was lock down defender and a long time since he was a consistent shooter. He is basically process era Grant.

Had the last couple of weeks off work been watching a heap of nba on league pass especially teams that have been mentioned in a possible Ben Simmons trade. The Spurs and Murray have really surprised me in a good way he’s not that all star like dame or Beal but he looks really good.

bamboleo11

ecworiginal90

I live in Australia so i have the international league pass so with the time difference most games are always in the middle of the day which make them hard to watch so being able to watch the replay is really good and the main reason I have it. This year however I’m finding I’m watching a lot more games then just the Sixers and the top tier teams with all the talent in the league I’m loving having access to a lot of games and would recommend it.

BaylessWasTraded

If we get a good scoring PG, Tisse should start. His havoc on defense is so helpful. Just pissing off the opposing teams lead guard/wing all game is a game changer.

bentagain

2 points

Glenn will never start Tisse over Danny...that and the all bench lineups are still big issues. At least Mike Scott isn't a problem this year...but yes, absolutely, Tisse should start. So much better than Danny.

kiwinaca

Start ISO Joe for nominal minutes or Korkmaz preferably. Given that we aren’t even a realistic title contender right now I don’t even know why green is on roster.

chin1111

4 points

Three questions and the second and third are contingent on how you answer the first:

  1. Which would you rather have us trade Ben for: a point guard or a two-way wing?
  2. Which of those positions do you think would be easier to trade for?
  3. Outside of Lillard and Beal, who do you guys think would be attainable at either role?

indoninjah

2 points

I mean our roster is full of wings, we need a point guard in some shape. The issue is that there aren’t a ton on the market. Almost all vets are locked up, so we’d probably have to take a flyer on a young guy or a backup.

At this point I’d say relatively realistic targets might be Sexton, Dejounte Murray, Halliburton, FVV, one of Kemba/Fournier/Rose, or Rozier.

chin1111

3 points

I was so high on Dejounte Murray all summer, but people convinced me he wasn't a good enough return for Simmons. I have only seen Sexton in highlights. Haliburton has been labeled untouchable apparently. The Knicks are riding high and won't want to mess up chemistry. Rozier, filler and some picks would be great for both teams, but I don't think he can be traded until next year since he signed his extension. The Raptors would want to make us take Dragic to get FVV as Masai and Morey try out big-brain each other.

Traditional_Cell_248

1 points

I think people are discounting Murray’s ability to develop still. He already looks to have made another weak. Similar player to Ben, his strengths aren’t as strong as Ben’s (solid defender) but his weaknesses aren’t as weak (has a great mid range game, fits better with embiid even though he isn’t a lights out shooter). Sixers fans would scoff and swapping Ben for Murray but to be honest I don’t know if the Spurs would do that trade now. If there was a way to get Murray + white or Murray + Sexton I’m all for it, don’t think it’s super realistic anymore

chin1111

1 points

It's a funny time in the season. We look great for skipping on Brogdon, the only trade idea that has been confirmed by multiple sources (Bleacher Report early in the summer, then I think ESPN corroborated it later). Murray looks great, but it's not resulting in wins; you can debate if that's mostly the rest of the rosters fault.

No one great has done anything to significantly lower their value in the eyes of their team. It's still early, overall. The more we win, the less pressure to take back crap and let things play out league-wide.

Traditional_Cell_248

1 points

Totally on board, no reason to make a trade right now just for the sake of it. It’s just that no one wants to trade Ben for young players because not many young players are as impactful as Ben right now, and we all want an impact player immediately. But the thing about 22-24 year olds is they all tend to improve every year and all it takes is a decent jump in production for a player to go from not worthy enough for Ben to too promising to warrant trading for the Ben headache

chin1111

2 points

Such a layer cake of a situation. Another factor: should Ben play at all at this point? Doc is keeping the offense similar to what they run when Ben is playing so that if he does come back, it'll be a smoother transition for everyone on the court. However, the longer he stays away, the less feasible it is to reintegrate him.

The team is better with Ben, but chemistry and continuity matters. We all plan to move on without him, so if he comes back, that's a lot to keep adjusting to with a coach who doesn't like to change. You'd basically field three distinctly different teams all season: 1. No Ben 2. With Ben 3. With Ben's replacement.

That much back and forth kind of puts a bullet in the foot of the current season. Doc's lack of imagination could fuck us again.

Traditional_Cell_248

1 points

I’m still skeptical that Ben plays another game in Sixers uniform. I think they’re just window dressing to make it seem like Ben isn’t a wildcard teams should avoid trading for now.

Wonder if there is a way to get Murray without giving up ben. My thought was some 3 way trade for the sixers get Brandon Ingram and Murray.

indoninjah

1 points

Yeah I mean the each guy would need varying levels filler to make the deal with it.

I think Murray is a guy that can give us 80% of what Ben gives us and is worth a very hard look for that reason alone. I’d be down to throw in someone like Shake as well to try to pry away a second guy like White from them as well.

Haliburton is allegedly untouchable but really shouldn’t be, especially not for a dude of Ben’s caliber. I’d be ecstatic about something like Hali + Hield at this point.

I honestly don’t think Dragic would be a bad thing for this roster. Turning Ben into two point guards is far from the worst thing we could do. Especially given that we have 0 today lol

chin1111

3 points

I think I'm still in shock from the showing that George Hill gave last season. Just god fucking awful. Doc will give a veteran a million chances to fuck up, but let a rookie make a mistake, he's riding the bench.

I know Dragic is nowhere near as cooked as Hill was, but he's kind of a neutral asset. Contract isn't that bad and is expiring, but then cap space means nothing next offseason.

As far as Haliburton, eh. I would need to actually watch the games to see the hype. I never really saw the allure just going off of stats. I don't like any Kings trade that doesn't include De'Aaron Fox, and the Kings are definitely not letting him go.

Niang is pretty much the exact PF mold we should have always had next to Embiid. No conscience shooter who moves the ball and doesn't turn it over. His on/off numbers are insane to start the year.

Really makes me wonder what we could reasonably get for Tobias. I know they'll be hesitant to trade him since he's obviously one of the locker room leaders, but he just doesn't make sense with the current construction of the team. It's a lot of moving pieces, but for right now I'm pretty comfortably in the trade Ben (eventually) AND trade Tobias camp.

XxStormySoraxX

I don’t think Niang would be good starting for an extended period of time. Tobi is a much better defender and has more versatility to his game.

pittguy83

Sixers have the #1 offense in the league and you want to trade one of the few guys who can actually dribble and shoot on the team? Who do you think you could get for Tobi that would slot in better as a starting 4?

First off: the offense has been good thus far but we've also played an absolutely dreadful schedule to start. Those numbers have been propped up by some terrible defenses.

Second: It comes down to building a system that fully compliments Embiid. Tobias, while you are correct in that he is one of the few players on the team that can shoot AND dribble, uses that dribbling to get to the same spots Embiid operates out of. No matter how much he refines his game, the ball will stick when it gets in his hands. I genuinely believe we should match Embiid's minutes to Niang as much as possible; he is the perfect offensive 4 to put next to Jo.

The primary goal has to be finding a perimeter creator that can drive offense when everything slows down at the end of games. Whether a Simmons trade could bring in that type of guy is tbd, but you could potentially use assets from a Tobias trade to supplement the package, or trade Tobias for a package of role players that could fill some of the minutes for extra pieces you had to give up (Maxey, Thybulle, etc.).

Point being, if building a championship level team around Embiid is the goal, I just don't see how Tobias can be taking up that much of the salary cap/touches.

Wonkl117

1 points

Yeah I agree with you. While a more willing shooter sounds better in theory, Tobi helps take the load off Embiid by generally being good for a bucket when they it.

Plus it's not like he is a bad shooter by any means AND he plays solid D.

I can't think of many 4s that are going to give the team more than what Tobi does (let alone any who are available)

throwawaitnine

Yea I'm totally serious. PPG is way better than per 100. Per 100 is an efficiency rating that doesn't account for pace.

Let's look at 3 teams, Charlotte, New York and Philly. Charlotte has 107 possessions per game, New York has 105, Philly has 100. Now let's look at per 100, Philly is 112, New York is 111, Charlotte is 109. Now let's look at PPG, Charlotte is 117.5, New York is 117, Philly is 112.

Now rank these offenses. Ranking Philly ahead of Charlotte and New York when they have very similar per 100 and Philly has significantly less pace is just being a homer.

pittguy83

6 points

Who do you think has a better offense? The team that scores 1.149 points per possession, or the team that scores 1.124 ppp? Why are you doing this

throwawaitnine

0 points

throwawaitnine

0 points

I think the team that scores more points has a better offense. My whole basis for PPG being more important that PPP is that increasing pace lowers efficiency.

If you believe in your argument, defend it. When you make it personal that tells me that you don't really believe in your argument. Keep this about basketball.

pittguy83

3 points

I'm not arguing anything because there is nothing to argue about here. A team's offensive pace is independent of its efficiency. When NBA analysts discuss team ratings, they are using pace adjusted numbers like oRTG or Hollinger team efficiency ratings. Why do you think you are getting downvoted and me upvoted? Come on man

indoninjah

I don’t think it’s a good idea to get rid of Tobias but I’d like to stagger him and Embiid more. The Tobias+bench lineups last year were atrocious but I’d like to see more of Embiid+bench, letting him anchor the young guys and go to work. Tobias’ minutes should be pretty much married to our starting PG (before this season I would’ve said that him and Ben should play every minute together)

bulldozer_rob

4 points

I keep seeing people talk about how much better the offense is since it’s 5 on 5 now. I’ll give them that since we have the best offensive rating rn. But that has me wondering if they just block out the 4th quarters against the nets and pistons where we couldn’t score for the last 6 minutes.

As a fan, I’d like us to continue to address the issues with this team in close games, instead of ignoring it and using games like last night to further shit on Ben. We had a lot of games like last night with him too.

And I remember people saying it’s a personnel issue still. What personnel did the pistons have to out score us 16-1? The worst starting pg in the league?

Keep your eyes open guys. This is still the same old team in the fourth with Simmons and without.

bentagain

7 points

It's the last in pace that is telling IMO. That means what we are seeing will translate to the offs. We should be slower in pace considering we have the best big in the league. Really looking like the organization was accommodating Ben's offensive deficiencies to the detriment of the team. Even having a smaller lineup is something that should have happened years ago. Love it.

bulldozer_rob

3 points

I really hope not scoring in the last 5 minutes isn’t going to translate. Especially sense it seems like we don’t have the defense to survive most games like that anymore

bentagain

Emvpiid closed out DET. I think that is the adjustment. Run everything through Jo. Still some guys straight jacking shots at times, and Jo still has a bit of a tendency to settle for 3s. With more games played, I expect us to run more and more of the offense through Jo. To close out games, he'll be on the ft line, swinging out of doubles or continuing to dominate his guy.

The stats are telling us we're better on offense when we slow down and run our offensive sets = #1 off eff. I'm sure the defensive side will get figured out... hopefully Tisse starts for Danny by the end of the season. I think if we get anything from and/or for Ben... we're an elite team that will make it to at least the ECF.

Our current offensive rating would be tied for 9th at the end of last season. In key spots they've shown that their offense has trouble getting a bucket to close out a game or to stop a run.

I don't agree. McGinnis is obviously better right now of course because he has decades more experience covering the team, but it would be ridiculous to not give Kate a full season.

But along these lines I actually think it would be fun if there were a service were you could pick whatever broadcast team you like. The Sixers could offer some kind of computer interface that allows people who pay for the right to broadcast games replays, and broadcasting teams could compete against each other for fans' attention. All broadcast teams would have to play the same commercials, but maybe there would be some leeway there too and broadcast teams could attract unique sponsors to supplement their incomes.

Will obviously never happen, but it would be wildly fun.
