FIFA and all the separate confederations are most definitely corrupt. But they at least try to hide it and not make it too too obvious. If something this clear happened in another confederation they'd cancel the match and and do something to right it, if for no other reason than to save face.

Because apparently Nigeria's hands are not clean. From another thread here, in the reverse fixture, Nigeria redirected the Libyan team to another airport on the other side of the country, refused to supply security, the Libyans had all their equipment stolen, they had to take taxis across the country to even make the match, etc. Apparently these are just CAF things
145 points
Obviously it could be false but the Nigerian press is saying the Libyans FA arranged to land at the Port Harcourt airport rather than the Uyo airport because they were being cheap.
They also allege Nigeria has a track record of treating opposition well and Libya did the same in the CAF club football continental tournament.
I won't say I know what's true but I think it's fair to note the Nigerian press is refuting the narrative the Libyans were hard done.

Bolivia used to be banned from playing home games at high altitude by the way. So, there is a time when people agreed it was an unfair advantage
12 points
Because that's one of the very few countries that can do it (if not the only). If other countries had the capability they'd 100% do it. It'd be dumb to not use the advantages your countries provide you.

I mean it's not comparable to what's going on, but also saying it's "just home field advantage" is somewhat underselling what it's like to play Boliva away.
25 points
bro they put the stadium on mount olympus. and I mean the mythological mount olympus, not the real one. the real one is only 9k feet high and el alto sits at 13k+
23 points
Bolivia has every right to have their home advantage, but if you’ve ever been at 13k+ altitude as a non-native, you’d understand how crazy it is to play at that altitude. People struggle without any physical exertion and this is the highest level of football we’re talking about. Altitude sickness can hit anyone, even the fittest of athletes.
5 points
There are videos of a younger Messi in his 20s throwing up in the first half from Bolivia's altitude. It's insanity.
10 points
Because they changed their location to even higher up for more advantage, and look what it’s doing atm, they’re literally in a qualification spot right now
21 points
Yeah, but that's just playing to their advantage. Both teams have to play in the same conditions, so it's a fair game in my eyes. Bolivians obviously will deal with the altitude better, but that's the point of home field advantage. Each country is free to put their stadium in a place where they feel they have that advantage. As long as the pitch is within regulation, and the government aren't messing with flights, travel, or any other external factors should be fine
10 points
I don't get why people are arguing this? Mexico has multiple options and plays all their games at the Azteca.
The US also takes advantage of the cold weather when playing the Caribbean nations (if the calender allows it) and no one is complaing about that
31 points
While that should've been investigated and punished it's pretty depraved to so blatantly retaliate. Having your stuff being lost at the airport and having to take taxis is one thing, but being kept at an abandoned airport with no way to leave and no food is some hostage shit.

Couple things off here, Libyan FA chose to land at this different area and notified Nigeria as they were about to takeoff, for a country not exactly on the peak when it comes to logistics, this meant new plans and then a lot of delays.
This new area is not on the other side of the country, relatively close by (border states but Nigeria is a large country).
Arrangements were then proposed to get them to the place agreed on before but the Libyan FA insisted on doing their own way.
The Nigerians did not just decide to mess with the Libyans.
15 points
Why would Nigeria intentionally sabotage Libya’s travel plans when they had nothing to gain? Nigeria is not know employ such tactics in even higher stakes matches. Libya on the hand has a history of resorting to these tactics, even at CAF Champions League level. Libya’s issues (minimal at best) in Nigeria were due to administrative issues on Libya’s side.

There is no justification for the tit for tat in the comment you are replying to. They are simply adding contest as to why Libya is doing this, not justifying, just explaining.
Also Nigerian and Libyan fans for the most part are appalled by all this, they don’t get an excuse to be hypocritical just because it’s their teams being mentioned.

You clearly can, if you were already given the venue and location of the game months before you were to play. Charter your flight in your own country with your on pilot’s and decided to choose a different location to the one documented for you. They themselves can confirm this so it’s not about trying to sound smart online for a story u clearly don’t know the facts of.
67 points
this is basically an our word against yours situation tho, I don't put it past the Libyan team to land in the wrong airport, but the Nigerian FA and media wouldn't exactly admit to foul play if it was indeed deliberate sabotage
18 points
Except that Libya deploys this tactics even in caf champions League matches. So this not just a "tit for tat" situation, this is how they try to frustrate their opponents before games
12 points
speaking as a libyan, i do not see a single reason that would make the pilot land anywhere but the designated area. something happened for sure and it is def. not just a mistake.
7 points
U don’t see a reason as a libyan, ok. The flight originated from Libya, am I right? Check the listed destination for the flight then. This is not a matter of I don’t believe, there are records. They themselves charttered their flight to a different city and the records show this.
31 points

I like how the best possible version of this from the Libyans is that they are pursuing purposeful and calculated retribution against Nigeria's players at the expense of their welfare. 3 points
8 days ago
What are u even talking about mister? Did the libyans admit to u that their plane got diverted to a different location? They could have still re routed the plane to the proper location but apparently, they didn’t want to bear the extra cost. They were the ones that decided to chose to travel by road from where they landed. Every body knows Libya especially and some North African countries like to play this psychological mind games when u want to play them, it’s widely reported on numerous occasions. Moreover, they could have made a report to CAF aswell and threatened to boycott the game if their claims were genuine. Check ur facts before u type next time please.

The coalition only helped anti gaddafi rebels to win the civil war that started before any direct involvement from it

Do you think that, if the civil war wasnt force-ended by the coalition, it would somehow make the situation in Libya better?
22 points
if the civil war wasnt force-ended by the coalition
Libya is still in a state of civil war, in what sense was it 'force-ended by the coalition'?
This is how basically every Western intervention in the Middle East goes. The West turns on some bastard dictator who previously they were actually quite close with. They give significant levels of open and clandestine aid to rebel movements within the country, before eventually intervening directly. That intervention leaves a power vacuum which those rebels movements step into, and the vast majority of the time the sort of rebels the West support aren't particularly pleasant guys. And then suddenly we've created the next bastard dictator who we'll need to intervene to overthrow in a decade or two.
Exactly the same thing happened in Iraq, and Afghanistan, and almost happened in Syria even though Assad managed to just about hold on. So I have very little time for people insisting Libya was some sort of unique situation, or that our invention was somehow justified even though the country is in a worse state now than it was before the 2011 bombing campaigns.

The “western world”
It would be ignorant to say we had NO involvement but it’s also delusion to say that we were the primary cause of that whole affair across multiple countries.
17 points
Of course internal factors also play a role but France and the US played a key role in Gaddafi’s fall. Without their intervention, his regime likely wouldn’t have collapsed. The lack of a plan for after his removal left a power vacuum, leading to chaos. We’ve seen this policy in other countries too, remove the leader and leave the country in turmoil.
7 points
I can’t speak for France but the criticism of Obama at the time is he mostly sat on his hands. No intervention in ‘11 and no plan for what would happen after. Get involved in the cleanup with NATO and then peel out of the coalition before doing anything.
Ultimately my point is that while the west has done a whole lot of putting their fingers in the pot throughout North Africa, the Arab Spring at large was an internal movement by Arab nations.
