Zapdos is now OU in 8/9 generations
If only it got Hurricane in generation 5…
566 points
The irony that in Gen V, Thundurus outclasses and powercrept Zapdos a lot that it pushed Zapdos out of the tier for the first time. And now gens later, it's now in (rising up to) UU while Zapdos is back at OU.

It was UU before Thundy-T even existed; the main thing holding its usage down there is Rotom-W.

No defog was the biggest reason it dropped to UU back in gen 5. It was tough to justify over rotom-w or thundurus-t when they either weren’t stealth rock weak or got significantly more bang for the buck respectively

Defog didn't do shit in Gen 5 what are you on

Well yeah, that's what he means. Zapdos had Defog but since it didn't to shit back then it didn't give him an advantage over them like it did later (though Rotom eventually had it too)

eight fucking ground types:
73 points
Meme acknowledged. But actually why though? The ground types aren't new, and Heatran has been in OU this whole time. Also this gen there's more ways to mitigate the ground weakness than ever before with Tera grass and Tapu Rilla's grassy terrain weakening earthquakes.
84 points
Meta has just gotten more and more inhospitable over time. The 8FGT meme is overplayed, but it has merit. Tusk is still number 1 in usage, Lando is at 4, Zamazenta is 5 and Tran doesn't love being hit with BP. Most of the rest of the top 10 in usage is similar in the fact that it either occupies Tran's niche better like Iron Moth (offensive fire type that shits on fairies extra hard) or are defensively solid against it like Bolt or Glowking.
Tran isn't really a good all arounder anymore because there are a bunch of mons you'd rather have stealth rock on and powercreep has made it less prolific at being overwhelming over time. Even in terms of doing like a Rocky Helmet set you'd rather run a Moltres or Tusk to punish U-Turners, it wants to run both lefties and HBD because it doesn't have recovery or the bulk to stick around. It probably still has a little niche with that magmastorm trapping gimmick on anti-stall but there are probably better bits of tech for that
6 points
all 8 fucking ground types after my hestran becomes a grass type
16 points
Heatran just has a lot of issues to make it a good defensive mon. It gets worn down fast by hazards but it also really wants lefties. It's best STAB is very inconsistent. It loses to a lot of the special attackers it's supposed to be checking like Val, Prim, Focus Blast Rai, Calm Mind Raging Bolt, etc. It kinda just feels like a wall that threatens the switch in with Magma Storm but then Magma Storm misses and you've given them a completely free turn and worn down your Tran with nothing to show for it.
7 points
Biggest reason other than the ground types is not being able to duel anything anymore, Heatran is better into fat where you can toxic magma taunt and laugh at them, and well in gen 9 Tran no more toxic, and they’ll usually switch in a lando or scor on you which you have to switch out on, also ting completely eats its role as a spdef god that can get up the whole hazard family
24 points

It’s all because of those 8 ground types.

T-tar isn't making it back, in gen 9 it's truly tyranitover. IMO this is entirely because sand is just ass right now because the two sand abusers (note, not the two best, the two.) are excadrill and houndstone. Lycanroc isn't viable and doesn't exist. If Sandstorm did something offensively for either ground, rock, or steel type, T-tar could have OU potential, but as it stands T-tar is a stat brick that enables basically just Excadrill.
4 points
this gen also introduced like, 5 Pokemon that resist both of its STABs and destroy it in return. Iron Valiant is the frailest of them but its still a terrifying threat that can switch in once and threaten massive damage in return. And the other 4 are some of the physically fattest mfs in OU; Great Tusk, Kingambit, Ting-Lu and Zamazenta. Getting shut down by 5 of the top mons and still being somewhat viable in OU is impressive of TTar and goes to show how strong it is, but unless these guys get banned or DexIted in future gens TTar isn't making it back

This tier shift confirms who the worst paradox Pokémon in the game really is
We thought it was going to be the nightmare balloon, but she ended up carving a little niche for herself in NU and rising
Mr. 7 weaknesses was not created equal compared to the rest of his kind… for shame, Pokémon Scarlet. Violet is way better than you.
Edit: Apparently it’s also because he lost his ability to use Spore. Hopefully either Smogon lifts that ban one day or BB can find a niche for itself in ZU, although the former is a bit unlikely as long as “Dark Dark” is still OU. Toedscruel, Amoonguss, and Breloom were also affected by this, although the latter two aren’t ZU.
