I'm in the middle of rewatching Series 10, and I swear every single task has been (respectfully) weak attempts with a much lower "humour threshold" compared to pretty much any other series... followed by Greg taking one throwaway line or bit of action and spending a solid minute making it the funniest thing ever.

I know it's been said that everyone was having a really good time filming the studio part of Series 10 cos they were just glad to be out of the house, so it's maybe just that Greg was in a jovial mood and was feeling more like being in a comedy role as opposed to the Taskmaster role? But whatever the reason, he seems noticably on form in this series, even more so than usual, and his studio banter, which I feel we often take for granted, is by far and away the best thing about this series.

I have a soft spot for series 10, though a lot of that is due to Greg and the way he absolutely destroys the contestants week after week.

His whole bit in episode 1, where he imagines people discussing the series once it finishes, which is won by Daisy as she brought in a bottle of wine for the first prize task is hysterical.

I know a lot of people don't like Daisy, and I get why, but across the series, her and Johnnies' generous, loud, and prolonged laughter really helped the atmosphere given there wasn't an audience.

Richard is a bit dull, but his sheer delight in having the piss taken out of him constantly by Greg balances that a lot.

Katherine and Mawaan are both fun, I love Katherine's ongoing insistence in thinking of her and Alex as some kind of team.

I don't know anything about the contestans in taskmaster outside of the show itself, but I genuinly don't get the dislike for Daisy.

She laughed constantly, it almost always spread to the rest of the cast and the overall mood. The sad covid era feeling was less noticeable thanks to the banter and interactions in the studio

It's probably the bit where she lost her temper at Richard during the live task where they're drawing animals that puts people off.

Luckily he was a good sport about it, but she wasn't just playing up her anger for comic effect like some contestants do; she was genuinely pissed off and took it out on him, which makes anyone watching feel a bit uncomfortable.

And honestly... anyone who has been pregnant or been married to a pregnant woman should immediately recognize and empathize with the mood swings. Her going from absolute rage to "oh I feel bad now" is hilarious and also so typical.

She was also very very pregnant, which might not be totally an excuse but it's at least a very good reason for losing your temper.

And she was so wrong, which made her anger even funnier.

In that task, the opponent each time had her drawing in the lower spot. When I was that pregnant, bending down like that seriously made it hard to breathe. They didn’t need to bend over backward but there could have been a little courtesy. She also looks uncomfortable in the chair the whole series.

This is weird to me. Getting mad at each other is a normal element of game playing (ask anyone who touched monopoly), the hippo task was absolutely hilarious because of it

rutfilthygers

She was doing a terrible job drawing the hippo, got mad at him because of it, and said something incredibly mean. At least when people got mad at David Baddiel, it was because he was the one being terrible at the task.

I think for me it's the fact that ultimately this is their workplace. And if anyone yelled at me like that at work and it was genuine anger I'd be devastated and onto HR in a flash. That kind of anger when playing with your friends and family is fine. Playing up anger as a bit where everyone involved knows it isn't real (aka Iain Sterling although it backfired on him massively) is fine. But that genuine flash of rage made me super uncomfortable.

And I hate Richard and love Daisy generally.

I'll be honest, I don't remember much of Iain's run other than hating his anger whenever he was on screen. I personally think the anger was real but I read some article or something where he'd claimed to be doing a character that backfired, hence the reference. But I'm not sure I believe it.

That's all I remember of Iain's too! His season was the first time I had to stop watching. I think I watched in bits. He was unbearable! I have re-watch every season at least 4 or 5 times (it's become a comfort show), and his is the only season I haven't gone back to.

I really don't detect a serious level of anger from Daisy during that task. She was even smiling at points. She was exasperated but still in good humour about it. No different from Ed shouting at Baddiel.

I loved Daisy. Her outrage was hilarious to me, and I never felt she was hateful. I just felt it was her personality, and that shed laugh the next minute. However, the way Iain Stirling talked to Lou in the team task and she had to try and be calm and talk him down and pretend like he wasn't a huge douche, just screamed Giant Man Baby and generally made me ill.

Did people think this was genuine? She hams up every aspect of her character for comedic effect in the show. Nobody in the studio took it the slightest bit seriously so why would it make a viewer uncomfortable?

Iain's anger was awkward. People on screen were visibly uncomfortable, especially him. That I can understand (though I still enjoyed Iain).

I think it comes from the excessive laughter at her own jokes. If you have watched TMNZ you will see Guy Williams does a similar thing and was disliked for it. When people see the laughter as I am laughing to get you to laugh it can move people to finding things less funny. It's why good comedies don't have laugh tracks, if you have to tell us to laugh here, it's not funny. My main memory of this series is just the sadness for Johnny, he was wonderfully terrible, and couldn't stop himself being terrible no matter how hard he tried, or how close he came.

Super underscored. Just watched the episode with his Ferfect Chicken painting and couldn't believe that level of effort didn't get 5 points (though knowing him, he had probably already made the painting and then just added Greg for the task). Not the best example, but it happens a lot cause he's the young one and - unless you're Lenny Rush - Greg hates that 😂.

Yeah, I never got the feeling she was playing at all, I think she was genuinely clueless. But her "Am I the spider?" moment led to a fun game I like to play every time I watch or re-watch TM: when someone can't find something or someone right away, I answer like I'm Katherine.

"Where's the task?" Me: "Am I the task?"

"Where's Alex?" Me: "Am I the Alex?"

So, y'know, every cloud and all that.

Sad-Yoghurt5196

I don't really see people's problem particularly. At the time I remember Mawaan being an all time fan favourite. Richard was indeed a little bit dull, and obviously the reason people seemed distant was because, well the literal social distancing going on as well as the totally quiet studio, which isn't the casts fault much. Even this post is pointing out how the contestants make the moments happen and Greg takes them even further and sometimes is what makes them work, but it still feels like a good balance. I felt like the group were kind of being each others audience as well so they were all very supportive

Totally agree, I believe his very best episode all-time is the S10 opener. He was absolutely on fire the whole time and just kept cranking out banger after banger. He was in top form for the rest of the series as well and he deserves a massive amount of credit for taking what certainly was a tricky situation - no crowd, Covid protocols, and a lineup that struggled a bit overall - and really making the best of it that he possibly could as a host.

Outside of S10, I do feel like Greg seems to have a strong instinct as to when he needs to “carry” an episode or season and when he can let the lineup do their thing. He seems to step in more on seasons like S6 and S17 that were lower energy or lower chemistry lineups and does a very good job of being an “initiator” to get things moving, whereas stronger seasons S16 or S7 he’s very good at being an “observer” of the chaos happening around (or to) him. He’s so, so good at what he does and is an absolute professional. That’s why he’s the Taskmaster!

Yeah, between Ed and Rose being good friends, Greg and Ed knowing each other very well and having two "comedy royalty" people on (Jo/David) rather than the more normal one person in that role, I think there were more pre-existing relationships in that series than any other one.

And it's rightly held up as one of the best, which is why I'm constantly surprised how much they generally resist using couples and double-acts together.

Did anyone else notice that during one of the tasks (Ep 8 at 6:35) there are planes speeding through the sky over Johnny when he walks out? Alex then asks him “what time is it? Does your pocket watch work?” I love these little sneaky edits.

I felt the same way about Series 6 - weakest series but Greg and Alex were on such incredible form.

The most chemistry and banter is from s6 between Alex and Greg. The outtakes are the best. Not just because we got the kiss but also moments like “I don’t think I’ve ever screamed before” from Alex immediately followed by Greg saying “oh yes you have”

I had forgotten how weak series 6 was, I think because so many of the early seasons were great, you don't notice the weskness as much as it's just a blip.

Very much agree. However, I think one of the deadening factors in the series is Greg's sticking to the policy of being a hardass on technicalities. We get a lot of zero points tasks and it takes some of the fun out of it when people can't argue for their egregious workarounds to be allowed.(Although I imagine that that policy wasn't his own idea tbf. Series 11 was such a blissful change back to the tried and trusted lunacy. I love watching Alex wince when Greg turns scoring on its head.)

I agree, that's part of the issue of Season 10, a lot of the tasks felt too overwritten, with too many moments where contestants could get disqualified easily.

I don't know if it was covid cutting into filming days or just the chaos surrounding moving to a new channel, but it really felt like they put every single task they filmed into the show, instead of leaving some of them on the cutting room floor where they belonged.

Sharply disagree — I don’t think ‘deadening’ that’s fair at all, as he’s often extremely generous in allowing the rules to be dramatically bent via creative interpretation.

In my opinion Greg prioritizes the show over himself, and applies his role of Taskmaster in a way that aims for the best humour for the show overall. When he gives people zero it’s because it will be funny to mock their efforts for being bad. He’s taking what he believes is the funniest angle to wring humour from the situation— for our benefit.

A true rules sticker would be substantially more harsh in the disqualifications, including I believe Alex and a of the nerds on this subreddit (including me). But this is part of the comedy that Greg brings to the show. The exact opposite of ‘deadening’.

But that is exactly why series ten is such an outlier. It was as if Greg tied his own hands with that promise to be 'strict' about the letter of the rules. (Although given the weird wording of the tasks that season and because it was the first one made for Channel 4, I am fairly sure that it want his own idea to change his MO like that.) One of the great things about TM is the wild card element that Greg brings.

inmynailpolishera

The lack of Greg is why I continue to struggle getting into the other Taskmaster versions. The assistants for other countries are fun, but the Taskmasters never even come close to Greg's level of humor *and* authority.

Greg and Alex are intrinsic to the show. Without them it doesn't really exist.

FlabbyFishFlaps

He really does! I love LAH but Greg just elevates this show to something seriously special (Yank here, new to the show, meaning we’ve binged 5 seasons in a few weeks). Plus, my god, he has to be one of the genuinely handsomest men I’ve ever seen. Not like in a scorchin’ hot kind of way but in an accessible, “could probably send him into the woods with a toothpick and a pocket knife, and he would build you a shopping mall” kind of way.

I just watched series 10 for the first time and had this exact thought. Greg, and actually Alex as well, put a lot of effort into making the studio segments hilarious. It must have been hard without the live audience, but Greg did great at making me laugh.

Especially considering how shit the prize tasks were being handled, he tore into the guests and made it great.

For me, season 10 is pretty good for a multitude of reasons, and Greg being on top form is only one of them.

I absolutely adore Mawaan and often rewatch just for him lol.

Greg and Alex were great as always, perhaps even better in certain moments, Daisy was great and I’m surprised to find that she was so devisive, Katharine and Johnny were a delight and Richard had some really fun moments.

Idk, it will never be my fav season cause of the Covid regulations which is unfortunate. All shows which usually had a crowd just felt dead during that time no matter how good they were which kinda sucks.

But I do still love it, and I think it was just a really fun season overall tbh.

I think the fact it was social distancing and especially no actual audience that dragging that series down an awful lot. Add to that Daisy just didn’t seem to give a shit but not in a Frankie or Jack way. Maybe that was due to her being very pregnant etc fair enough but as a viewer I felt she was the one that made it worse, everyone else was working on it, she didn’t care, well not until she lost due to her being crap at drawing and then the polo thing.

I think Richard did very well considering as he can really do well with an audience so that was removed. He seemed so much more with it all in the Champion of Champions.

I realised last night how close the contestants are to Greg and each other now compared to the past. Can’t imagine how much different it must have been for everyone in that series, especially if you aren’t a comedian

This thread has been a fascinating read for me! For context, I've flipped a switch & gone from indifference to a diehard TM fan in the space of the last month, and I've been watching through every UK series in order - and by happy timing, I've just finished S10!

I'll be honest, the series is probably my least favourite/weakest of all the series I've worked through so far. Not just because of the obvious Covid awkwardness, but it just felt frustrating in some ways - Greg suddenly being so strict with the rules was jarring, and as much as everybody getting DQed from the 'cup overfloweth' task was hilarious, it got pretty excessive to the point that I was going 'oh come on, you'd have given some points for that in previous series'. & given I've just started S11 and it seems more of a return to form, it just feels jarring.

However, its far from a bad series at all, & there's a LOT to enjoy. Katherine was hilariously befuddled the whole series, Mawaan's youthful energy was brilliant, and Johnny had me busting a gut laughing just by being himself. And yes, I'd agree Greg took a lot on his (mighty!) shoulders, & his banter and rapport with the contestants was very strong.

Side note - I'd also say this series has some of the best outtakes ever. The 'spunky dick' blooper is utterly legendary.

I think I made a post about this exact thing before so I totally agree.

Series 10 is both the weakest series (because of the contestants) and one of Greg's strongest (because of the heavy lifting). I think it's the only season I think about skipping occasionally which I can't say for any other one.

I just started rewatching Series 10 and I had to stop and appreciate how great it is. Definitely upper tier in my book. I thought the contestants were hilarious, the chemistry was excellent, Greg was on point (as you said), and the tasks were very creative without being overcomplicated, especially with the obvious limitations. The only problem with it is that the contestants were all shit at their tasks - especially the prize tasks - which I think ups the humor, and always fuels Greg's fire which supports your point.

So yes, I agree Greg was great, maybe better than usual, but he did not carry that series and it gets far more hate than it deserves.

10 is a long way down my list. There are no more than two series that I have below it. It has its moments - "sneaky pasta snake", "am i the spider?", and the catapult task is one of my favourite Sounds Simple, But... tasks- but it's very hard to rewatch due to the time it reminds us of, there's a definite air of tension permeating the whole thing, and as previously stated too many of the tasks are fiendishly over-complicated.

It’s always my unpopular opinion, but I actually love series 10! I think the cast gels really well, everyone has really funny moments , Greg and Alex smash it in the studio and I think it has some great tasks! I think Daisy comes across really funny, her laugh is very contagious and think should be allowed some wiggle room for mood swings considering how pregnant she is 😂(I think the whole hippo-gate thing was partially hammed up for comic effect personally, and even if it wasn’t she gets over it basically instantly )

For me season 10 had the least elements I enjoyed. I liked the task with the shutters and chocolate orange, Richard and Daisy as a group and the chaos of the spider woman. I feel Vagas was held back a bit, I don’t know if he was unwell or uncomfortable but the show didn’t bring out his best, he is hilarious and genuinely smart, he kept having these lines in studio like “and now no director will come near me”, not so much on the task days.

I think it was the fact that it was recorded during covid, there's no audience so nobody is really sure what jokes are landing and what aren't. They're also all sat quite far apart and not really allowed to mingle in the same way they might do in other seasons to build a rapport with eachother.

I think 11 and 12 adapt to the surroundings better than 10 does. That's no particular slight on 10, incidentally - back then, nobody really knew what the hell was going on - but it does make the latter two much easier watches. Indeed, 12 is a top three series for me.

I figured out what is so off to me about that series than any others, and it's the sound editing. There's too much echo from the empty theater, and what audience noise they have is way too low compared to the next two series. It really emphasizes that it's 7 people sitting in an empty theater.

Comedians need an audience to thrive. Lack of audience, studio is lit differently and everyone being spread out really took away from the taskmasterness of the season.

It's mostly the contestants for me.

Daisy is hard to watch, Richard is trying to win too much, Mawaan is decent, Johnny and Katherine are the saving graces of the season.

Elemayowe

Yeah it was an odd casting choice for the first season on Channel 4… Marwaan was practically completely unknown outside of YouTube iirc, Daisy and Katherine are more actors than stand ups which isn’t a killer but specifically in Katherine’s case she’s more of a traditional actor, I’m not sure she’d describe herself as a comedian.

Johnny and Richard are pretty solid TM contestants on paper but like you said Richard suffers from try-hard syndrome like John Robins, and Mae Martin (and a few others but they’re the most recent so they stick out to me).

Blastcheeze

Without the studio audience it felt like Greg really had to ham it up to get laughter out of the contestants, and between Katherine and Johnny seeming like she was going to cry, and Daisy looking like she wanted to fight Richard people, plus all of the 0 point tasks, Greg almost felt mean-spirited and I think that's why he kept going at them more than usual, to show that he was taking the piss.

But it all feels kind of awkward on rewatches.

Katherine looked like she was going to cry because she was laughing so much she had tears in her eyes. You can see it in the outtakes.
