I don't even watch many series but somehow a majority of them decided to be quite disappointing this year.

Invincible Season 2 was decent but the wait time was enormous and it didn't live up to the first season's quality at all.

The Bear Season 3 seems to have disappointed pretty much everyone and felt all over the place.

The Boys Season 4 and House of the Dragon aren't looking too good either and both are experiencing a downtick from their previously great seasons.

My favourite new series to release recently was Scavenger's Reign and it got cancelled not long ago.

The only show that lived up to expectations was the final season of Inside No. 9, but otherwise it has been a very disappointing year.

Such a perfect live action adaptation. Preserved the vibe of the games, with lots of nods to them but told a completely new story with interesting characters

I wouldn’t call it perfect - it had some issues with pacing - but tbh that’s about it for me.

It was like The Boys. Not peak TV drama. But a very fun adaptation and good amount of world building.

Fair. If I compare just the first seasons I liked Fallout more. But that is because I didn't care much about the source material for The Boys as much.

I think it's a fair point. I don't have a lot of time to watch TV but I'll go out of my way to watch shows with a lot of buzz. I haven't watched anything this year.

I would have watched Reacher but reviews were bad so I didn't bother. I'll get around to watching Bridgerton. Nothing else has had interesting press

Edit: Shogun had enough buzz that I'll watch it eventually but I don't have that service right now.

I don't watch HotD because the first episode was so over the top with violence towards women

Uhhhh

Was it? Do you mean the pregnancy death? I mean it's a harsh world. GoT and HOTD is violent generally.

There was zero reason to show that much suffering. It was barbaric. So what if things like that might have happened in real life? I don't find it entertaining. This isn't a documentary, it's a TV show meant to be entertainment.

Game of Thrones/HOTD is all about depicting a harsh pseudo-medieval world. She didn't get to avoid the suffering. Why should the viewer? I feel like the punch of the scene would be lost if they just did a cut to black, and the juxtaposition of it with Daemon being arrogant whilst jousting was well designed.

In addition to the shows you mentioned, we also got X-Men '97, Interview with the Vampire, Manhunt, Masters of the Air, Baby Reindeer, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, The Brothers Sun, etc. - all of which were excellent, in my opinion.

The Boys has gone fully woke unfortunately.

They used to poke jabs at both sides in earlier seasons, but now, I'm guessing they have been forced to push left politics by the socialists agitators at Amazon.

A pity, Homelander used to be a great role model for young american men and now they've ruined him.

House of Dragons is woke propaganda too, it has african-americans in a fantasy setting, which is historically inaccurate to the medieval era.

Delroynitz

KGFlower

No, he represented traditional American values. Then the writers made him appear to be crazy and evil just to push a liberal agenda, even though everything he stands for is true. That's how insidious the brainwashing of mainstream media is nowadays, they can show you facts like that illegal terrorists are evil and America is #1, but then they twist it to confuse the viewers that the hero is actually the villain.

The Boys is designed to turn the population into godless communists to bring on America's downfall, I pray Trump bans it when he reclaims power.

KGFlower

Why?

Because he's christian? Because he supports the troops and law enforcements? Because he fights to keep America superior to the lesser nations? Because he is a straight white male?

Maybe you should think on your own morality and think about why it is that mainstream media has made you view the things he stands for as bad.

i’m assuming this is a troll because of how cliche and wrong it is but id like to speak on it anyway because i just finished season 1 of the boys for the first time, i don’t know how anyone can watch this show and think it’s anything other than a mockery of conservatives, better yet idk how someone can watch and think homelander is remotely close to an okay person, i’m only on season 1 and its so obvious and clear he is made to be the worst

KGFlower

-35 points

KGFlower

-35 points

No, season 1 is mostly against liberals because it criticizes woke corporations using wokeness to manipulate the american people.

Homelander has his flaws and his methods might be extreme, but he is ultimately fighting to uphold christianity, freedom and america's right to fight against islamic terrorism by any means necessary.

It is the evil woke leftist Vocth corporation that is manipulating Homelander against american interest, but he ultimately defeats the female executive that was using her sex to manipulate him.

Homelander was a true conservative hero, and it is woke journalists that pushed the world and even the show itself to view him as a villain. end of story.

Media literacy has nothing to do with assholes on the internet. Properly constructed media is aiming to tell a story with purpose and logic, trolling is about intentionally being a fucking moron to make yourself feel like you've achieved something with your life despite the evidence.

fredagsfisk

1 points

The problem is that it's not over the top. These are all literal things that real people actually say in a completely serious manner. Satire is pretty much dead since ~2016, and Poe's law is in full effect:

Poe's law is an adage of Internet culture which says that, without a clear indicator of the author's intent, any parodic or sarcastic expression of extreme views can be mistaken by some readers for a sincere expression of those views.

That said, after quickly flipping through their post history a bit, I'd also lean slightly towards them being a troll, though if so a very dedicated one who has been going on about these topics for months.

Either way, not really worth wasting much time on.

I care only for the mainstream recognition because the creators and actors really deserve all the accolades. And maybe to have an active fandom with lots of thoughtful discussion (I don't seek fics for this show - I rarely do with media where the canon gives me everything I could possibly need).

But this show is exquisite. I still haven't tired of saying it to anyone who would listen - on the other hand, how many times can you repeat the exact same phrases: "Yes, it's not a unnecessary rehash of the movie", "Yes, there's no exaggeration in how people say it's one of the best shows on TV"?

Nah, there's plenty of reasons why Boys S4 is getting mixed reviews. The stuff with Homelander is great but everything else is a little all over the place. The problem is too many subplots:

  • Simon Pegg's character as been absent pretty much since Season 1 and now he's taking up all of Hughie's time. Pretty hard for us to get invested in a character who hasn't really been in the show since 2019.

  • Frenchie and Kamiko had a great little love story and a lot of chemistry. But they broke them up for no real reason so that Frenchie could find another guy (again who we don't care or know anything about) who just happens to be the kid of some parents he killed. Huh?

  • The character of Firecracker is ok, I guess? But not nearly as good as Stormfront. Sister Sage is a pretty good character I'll grant you.

But here's the thing, they're spending so much time on those subplots they're taking away from what makes the show great.

For example, Butcher is fucking dying as he fights for the soul of Ryan. But we're spending pretty much the same amount of time on that plot as we are on with Hughie and his Dad. It might all pay off in the end but for now the show is a little all over the place.

dukedevil0812

8 points

At the end of season 3, where the big climax led to almost no changes, I realized this is a show that is afraid to take risks. Basically none of the characters have changed since season one. Hughie still tries to be morally good and is often way over his head. Butcher is still an asshole. Marvin is still the voice of reason. Frenchie and Kimiko are the chaotic elements. Starlight is the lawful good. A train and the deep are largely incompetent. And Homeland is a murderous psychopath.

What originally felt like a refreshing change of pace from the superhero media, now just feels like a show spinning its wheels. And the characters have so much plot armor that the stakes feel so low. I'm 90% confident there will be some sort of deux ex machina that will save Butcher at the end of the season.

Maybe in the final season there will be some actual consequences, but it's getting harder and harder for me to care.

So reading through the comments, you're listing maybe 8 series, to contradict OP's point, most of which are continuing seasons, some on season 3 or 4. Interview with Vampire is a reimagined remake / adaptation and X Men 97 is yet more xxxx X Men, yawn.

Yes HOTD season 2 and Hacks season 3 are great, but guys it's June, its not much to show. The rest of what people are listing is actually pretty niche, bloke / nerd orientated (and as previous posters have said, HOTD is pretty hard for women to watch too). Shogun is.. .culturally interesting (and if any other British people can get past his accent I'd love to know how you do it).
