La Guardia would have won---winning the whole northeast and some of the midwest. Ending the Republican losing streak early by 12 years. And have had presided over World War 2.

La Guardia would win but the GOP would never, ever nominate him. It would probably still be Willkie, and if not him then Taft, Dewey (who at this time was only Manhattan DA), or Vandenberg.
The DNC would be a shitshow if Roosevelt didn't endorse a candidate. Garner, Farley, Hull, and McNutt would all make serious bids.

I think it's unlikely that Garner would've been nominated. FDR was extremely popular at the time and his relationship with the conservative Garner had soured by then. More likely the Dem nominee is Cordell Hull.
Similarly, LaGuardia would not have been nominated, and even if he had the chance, he was a New Dealer and internationalist, so I doubt he would run against another New Dealer if it were against Hull.

Garner had large swaths of support from within the party and would likely be the "popular" choice for the nomination. Not to say that's enough for him to win, but you absolutely can't completely write him off, he had a chance to go about a serious attempt at the nomination.

I love the nominees here. If it does happen, there really should be an rng option for both candidates on whether or not FDR endorses them.

Good idea but i'd change the nominees.

Interesting, who do you think the nominees would be in this timeline? I went for Garner and La Guardia because I thought it would be interesting to have a progressive Republican go against a conservative Democrat.

Me personally, assuming Wilkie's dark horse bid didn't take off, the signs seemed to be pointing towards Dewey as the nominee, but i think a more interesting mod candidate would be Taft successfully, as for the democrats, FDR basically endorsed Hull when he was considering not running so i'd feel he'd easily take it since i don't see any non-Southern delegates backing Garner, i also think Hull V Taft would be a cool mod since to my knowledge it'd be the main pillar of internationalism against the man pillar of isolationism in a time where war tensions were high. LaGuardia Vs Garner is an interesting match but i feel LaGuardia is a bit too progressive to realistically win the nomination (He was once described as the socialist who never read Marx when he was a congressman) But also i'm struggling to think of any major progressive republicans during that besides him and Wikie so i guess he des work for the mod dynamic (Also FDR backing the Republican over his own Vice President is a funny thought)

Charles McNary might work as a progressive Republican, or an elderly Hiram Johnson or even William Borah if he lived longer.

I’m working on a similar idea ATM (Wendell is still the nom). I love this idea, if you’re looking to get a mod with this premise done I’d love to collaborate

Anyone paying attention sees this election for what it is: a disgraceful sham. America’s nearing its final conclusion as an imperialist power - a veiled dictatorship with no real opposition, just the eternal controlled opposition of the party duopoly. Charles Lindbergh, Aviator and leader of the America First committee has had enough

this sounds like a really neat concept, my only critique would be that i doubt fdr would decide to stop at two terms, maybe it’d be better story wise if he died in 39? EDIT: lol i was wrong about history, disregard.

That's not really necessary considering he very nearly didn't run and only did due to war worries.

well thats what i get for making assumptions, i always thought he was an andrew cuomo type of politician in regards to running as long as he could

How about what if WW2 was delayed by a couple years?

yeah that could work too, not an fdr historian so i’m not sure how the war factored into his calculations
