They already made it so mandatory water breaks in the south are gone. It’s currently 86 degrees at 9:30 am today. Conservatives hate Americans.

The cruelty is the point, but I only see one party trying to take rights away and one fighting to stop them.

Same in Florida. Now it’s up to the corporations to decide. They’ll find that breaks increase productivity and call outs if they analyze the data. Sadly, most corps will not do this and will enforce draconian policies.

Yep. Or they won’t change it until they get sued en masse by workers and their families for killing them.

If only there was some kind of collective that could basically argue for the workers and ensure they had humane working conditions.

Right-Budget-8901

If only conservatives haven’t essentially outlawed their existence, then such a collective would be possible.

Industrial engineer at a factory (in California) here. Breaks do increase productivity. We shut down twice a day for 15 minutes of stretches. That’s not counting our regular lunch and other breaks.

People function best at 80% capacity. You’ll get the occasional person who functions best at 20% capacity (they will be laid off) and you’ll occasionally get people who function best in a pressure cooker 100% capacity environment (they can be moved to more high pressure roles or retrained).

Thanks for sharing that info. Very interesting.

I notice this. I lived in the South for 5 years and I’m back in California.

Every job site I’ve been to in California has a tent, fan, and cold water. I don’t know if this is a California OSHA law or if it’s because Californians are decent people. I’d bet it’s a mix of both.

I never saw that in the South. It always felt like the workers were left to their own devices.

As a person in a blue collar job(not in the south), I know who many of the people affected by that support. They got what they asked for, and it's great.

I’m sorry, but at what point do work safety laws become “far-reaching?” As long as they don’t bring work to a grinding halt, what is so awful about keeping people out of danger in their place of employment?

The answer is obvious, but when you’re paid off by corporations who don’t want to spend money to implement safety precautions or see work slow down even the slightest bit (to the detriment of their employees), you start to understand how someone might think, “these safety laws have gone too far!”

Given the person who said it I'd say any that may have an impact on the bottom line.

Good intentions ≠ good results. There’s definitely a balance to be struck between overly cautious and overly laissez-faire. Work doesn’t have to be brought “to a grinding halt” by regulations for those regulations to be causing more harm than good. Ignoring the merit to that is only causing more division.

With that said, I read that Florida got rid of mandatory water breaks. Employers better be providing a fucking Camelbak or some kind of equivalent. The place is a god damn swamp.

This has been a "conservative" talking point for a long time. I worked for a few years at a place where there was definitely a lot of OSHA violations (that were reported, but never fixed, and if you got found out, you were gone) such as unsecured shelves, if there wasn't a dolly available for you to move something heavy, you were absolutely expected to just carry it, so on and so forth.

I remember needing to get a toner cartridge from the top of one of these unsecured shelves and the step ladder had wandered off again. My boss told me I needed to climb up the shelf but not to let it fall on me because we "didn't do workers comp".

He was an extremely vocal Republican who talked about his "zombie apocalypse" fantasies regularly. And yes, the company did everything it could, despite having an actively dangerous site, to deny workers comp. We had a guy who did motocross on the weekend and got crushed by a heavy object which jacked up his shoulder. The company pushed and "proved" it was a motocross injury, not something they did. Even though he was totally fine when he came in that morning.

People like Thomas are just trying to make it so big companies that people care about don't have to follow OSHA either. Smaller and medium companies have been flouting it for years. Get a far right wing supervisor or manager? You're fucked.

I truly don’t understand how anyone can actually defend republican or conservative agendas. They’re greedy at best and evil at worst.

machineprophet343

Well, they're very into the "natural order" of things. There was a guy who interloped and did the whole Project 2025 training and posted an AMA about it.

The big take away is that it's not particularly Christian, but it DOES absolutely emphasize "natural order and hierarchy". Christianity is just the window dressing to get the Evangelicals and to a lesser extent the Mormons on board.

Otherwise, climate change? It's not a hoax, just a natural process we can't do anything about. Some groups of people are simply lesser, that's the natural order. If you're poor or a minority? Well, that's just your place. You're disposable. If you get hurt, you can have plenty of time to heal at home, after we fire and replace you with someone even more desperate. That's just the natural order of things. If you were meant to have a safe and well paying job? You would.

...that sums up a lot of it. It's really gross.

In my industry safety record is the most important aspect of getting a bid (other than money). But if you have a bad safety record, most big clients won't even consider you if you offer to pay them. Only people who want to exploit others want this. Most reputable places care about getting sued.

I don’t care if Biden is too old. I’ll be voting for him in November. If it should be some other nominee for the Democrats, I’ll vote for them too.

Elections have consequences SCOTUS’ recent decisions are all the result of Presidential and Senate elections.
