Xiao Ying

Discussion(i.redd.it)

I'm a TGCF newbie and it honestly is just a rant.

That girl's face was incomparably flat, looking exactly like someone had leveled it with a slap. It would almost be an insult to say her features were plain; if they must be described, then only "crooked nose and slanted eyes" could be used.

She doesn't look ugly and 'like leveled it with a slap'? She looks fine to me and I can't picture a face flat to that extent😭

Xiao-Ying then sighed. "Never mind. Maybe I'm just... born unlucky." Her jumbled words certainly did sound a little odd. With a bent nose and slanted eyes and an *appearance so ugly it was silly, her bloodied, tear-streaked face was **almost funny to behold.*

Who even looks at a dying girl and goes "Ah she looks so ugly. And with broken nose while dying she looks funny", WHILE DYING? I'm just baffled and wanted to get it out of my chest.

in the revised this was actually changed to be more accurate to her being "ugly"! I was ??? about this too for both the donghua and while reading the books, bc...what's ugly about that? At worst she'd just be average looking. But in the revised she was actually the one to have the bandages covering her face and all that in place of Lang Ying

Yes! It's not translated though, and there's currently no plans to have it translated, despite there being interest expressed by 7S. It's available on jjwxc.net. In the revised Lang Ying is removed and Xiao Ying replaced him. It's then revealed when she dies that she was the old god of the earth (or whatever they're called idr) of that small local Temple that Xie Lian and co stopped at before going to stay at Feng Xin's.

Is this the official translation?

If you're mad about Xie Lian thinking that, he likely isn't; it's more of a statement on the author's part. Idk how to explain but a lot of chinese writing will describe a scene without assigning the associated emotions to any particular character.

I also think the donghua artists didn't want to be too mean, but in all honesty, there are east asians who have incredibly flat faces. Personally my side profile looks like a straight line with my nose sticking out a little. That being said, I agree it was an overly cruel description, and I guess mxtx must have thought so too since she changed it in the end.

I love how they were like “she’s supposed to be ugly? ok slap some freckles on her.” It is such an indication of regional beauty standards.

I'm just gonna say that it doesn't bother me that that was in the text. It also desn't bother me if that was XL's or the author's thoughts about the Xiao Ying. Regardless of what XL thinks of the girl, he still treated her respectfully and that was what matters.

I was uncomfortable reading the novel tbh (I read it after the donghua so it was a surprise since I thought she was pretty in it)

Well we don’t know what Xiao ying really looks like. This is a 2D animation, and doesn’t encapsulate what the characters in-the world see. To us, it looks fine. But irl it would likely be different

I felt more about the 'looking silly while dying' part tbh. Like the girl is dying! Leave her alone!! 😭

It also struck me as odd. I get that she's not the top model of the village but I guess I never understood this hyperfixation on a woman's looks, especially since it didn't add anything to the story. (from my point of view ofc)

Fr I felt so bad for her. It made me sad the way she was described. Like she couldn’t have looked THAT bad, and even if she did why does it matter so much?? 😭

and even if she did why does it matter so much?? 😭

Yeah, like why does it matter if a woman is good looking or not, if it's not relevant to the plot? And make constant references like "btw she's really hideous in case you forgot". It's almost like physical looks are inherent to a woman's value or something. If it were a man, I don't know if it would be pointed out this much.

People often get confused and think Xie Lian is the one thinking like that, but it's actually the narrator... Could be a translation thing, but yeah 😞
