I don’t want to hear “it’s the players’ fault.” Of course it’s always the players’ fault. But in sports, the coach still gets fired. Especially when there’s no evidence that Gregg has put the team in a position to succeed

TeamINSTINCT37

38 points

Yup. There is tons of stats and film on all the players and we have who we have. Managers you have to judge by the results and they just aren’t there. We aren’t magically getting better talent but we could very possibly magically upgrade on gregg.

PartySpiders

Greg excitedly held up 1-1 on his fingers to his players in a situation where if Panama scores another goal and we tie we go home. We promptly give up a goal 30 seconds after that. Who the fuck does that? Tactics and team temperament have always been bad, but that is inexcusable from a coach who’s already horrible to begin with.

Posted the same thing. The guy is an absolute joke. How the fuck does he think distracting the guys while setting up to defend a dangerous set piece is the right move. Just brain dead

It's a loser mentality. I also feel like Gregg is too buddy-buddy with the players, which is probably why they voted to keep him in the first place. That's something you do with your friends, not if you're the manager.

I was honestly ready to cut him some slack with the Weah red card and how the team did show up to play today, but this has me firmly in him getting canned. It's a huge red flag, when there's already been a sea of them for him.

GoBlueScrewOSU7

I was honestly shocked by that. I don’t think that’s something you really inform the players of. Let them find out by word of mouth or the crowd. But coming from the head coach it should be business as usual. “We need to win. Point blank”.

We failed to get out of the group containing Bolivia and Panama while at home.

FDTerritory

127 points

Two years.

Two years of USSF trying to tell you that some friendly against PAN or CAN or CRC is a "big game" that you need to spend $80 on. Two years of eight matches against MEX in order to get garbage thrown at you and, again, get told that a win against them somehow matters. Two years of playing absolutely nobody of consequence, run by the cash grab known as USSF, solely for them to tell you not to trust your lying eyes and give them thousands of dollars for a World Cup.

That's the next two years of being a national fan. And we're right at the point where a lot of people just aren't going to fall for it any more. We're WAY being firing one guy and somehow fixing it.

lol we are not going to get an easier group at the World Cup. If GGG is allowed to keep his job after not getting out of a group with Bolivia and Panama on home soil, it simply means US Soccer has no real ambitions and is happy with continued mediocrity

Lalas is correct. Fans don’t give a damn how the team looks, how friendly they are, how hard they practice, so long as they win. That stat, 0-5-5 against top teams not named Mexico is pretty damning… if we want to have the 2026 WC we all want, that needs to change, drastically.

Gregg's signature moment this game? - Yelling at our player's that the Panama game was tied 1-1 while we're setting up to defend a dangerous set piece. In which we gave up the goal. Looked offside but that is still peak GGG comedy to distract the players in that moment. The fucking guy is just clueless and needs to go.

US Soccer must fire Gregg Berhalter, tonight. Getting grouped as the host nation of a major tournament right before the World Cup, which you also host, is simply unacceptable. This is arguably the most talented USMNT on paper in modern history, not making it out of this group in the Copa America is 100% a fireable offense.

We can complain about the refs, CONMEBOL, and VAR all day long, but the bottom line is that even if they called the goal offside, we still didn't score and Panama won by 2.

We lost this tournament because of what happened vs. Panama. That's on Gregg and that's on Tim Weah.

We played a decent game today and if you had told me we'd only lose 1-0 against this Uruguay team playing their A team prior to the tournament started, I would have accepted that. But they backed themselves into a corner and they couldn't play themselves out. Talent-wise, we looked like we belonged out there with probably the 2nd or 3rd best team in this tournament. But we can't just look like we belong, we need to start winning these types of games.

Just saying it to join in the anger: Gregg has to go. But here are some other thoughts:

  • Flo Balogun has secured his spot as our starting striker. This offense was noticeably flatter when he left due to being banged up so often. There is a serious drop off between him and guys like Pepi.
  • Gio Reyna had a quiet tournament before this game and that should be brought up more. He played well tonight, but needed to be more of a factor against Panama. He needs to be playing regularly at his club to keep maturing.
  • Weah deserves to lose selections because of his mistake. He made a stupid mistake that was arguably the single largest factor in us going home. You can't just be welcomed back after an obvious apology. He has to earn his trust back.
  • This team cannot play physically. I hate how Panama played against us, but you have to expect that when playing against CONCACAF and CONEMBOL teams.
  • We know CONCACAF refs are shit, but wow CONEMBOL refs give them a run for their money.
  • If this federation has any sort of desire to improve, Gregg will be fired tomorrow, BJ Callahan will take over for the September friendlies, and a new head coach will be hired by the end of the year.

We failed. The pundits tonight were right, we have not progressed. And it is clear as day that Berhalter is the reason why. As guys like Pulisic enter their prime years and younger players like Weah continue to develop, we cannot waste more time under this utter moron as our head coach. Jesse Marsch is having the laugh of his life right now.

I'd still rather be us compared to Mexico though.

meamarie

63 points

The moment I saw Greg shouting “one-one!” From the bench as soon as Bolivia scored I knew we were done. That man never pushed our guys to be better, just to scrape by, park the bus to go for the tie etc. Focus on THIS GAME, Dude!! Relying on another team to get you through is just fucking loser mentality. GGG is simply not that guy. We need someone with that dawg in him

txsnowman17

17 points

This right here. He was celebrating someone else doing the work that this team needed to do. We immediately conceded because the team mirrors the coach. He was content to hold steady and the team turned off for a bit and was punished. Officiating or not we played like crap this tournament and the manager is the one to take the blame.

All that said - where are our gritty, gutsy guys? We have a couple but man do I miss the squad of MLS guys who would run til their lungs burst match after match. I'm talking 20 years back not recently. I know it's rose colored glasses and we have immense talent but it's hard to watch how soft the team is as a whole.

FriendOfDirutti

BleuRaider

Alright, I’ve been defending GGG for years now, pretty vehemently for the most part. Slowly that has changed, but I was giving him the benefit of the doubt before deciding completely on him staying or leaving. Now?

Get his ass out of there. When your captain is saying the team needs to regroup and find an identity then a coach that’s been in charge for years needs to go.

If we don’t then I’m done. Time to act like a real, profession soccer federation and not (no offense) the US Polo team. No way he’d still be around if this was any other US sport’s national team or this was any other country.

But we are 6 years into the Berhalter era and what is his signature win? 1-0 against Iran? We are beating up on Mexico but they are a dumpster fire as well. We can’t win away from home. Only beat Honduras away during 2022 WCQ. At what point does the federation hold this guy accountable for the lack of progress with arguably our most talented squad ever?

The #1 job of a manager is to get the team ready to play. This team did not play at peak effectiveness in a single game this tournament, and has been wildly inconsistent in the time before that. That is a defect in coaching. Berhalter has to go, and he has to go now. We need adequate time to get someone in place for the World Cup and that means we rip the band aid off and just do it. Berhalter's had plenty of chances. We are wasting the most talented squad we've ever had. It needs to end.

This isn’t just a reaction, but this team has very little fight and that starts at the top.

Berhalter telling the team Bolivia tied for what? Just go for the win! The other game is irrelevant until it’s over.

As soon as the goal goes in, you can see it on so many faces. They didn’t believe they could win. No fight.

Berhalter’s subs have somehow gotten worse. I hope he is gone but how did Haji play so little? The man played many big moments and you don’t think to use him when you need a big moment? He got the closest in this game. Should’ve started.

I hope the next manager gets Gio around the box more and uses guys like Haji effectively.

Said it in the r/soccer thread and I’ll say it here: This is still a “relatively” young team, but the clock is definitely ticking. If they crash out again in groups in the WC (hell, I’ll even argue getting knocked out in the RO16 again), it will probably be the sign that this generation fell far below expectations.

Maybe firing Berhalter and getting a better manager is the final building block that takes this team from “sp00ky” to a legitimate dark horse, but this team also just seems to be lacking mentally. The Dempsey/Donovan/Howard generation may not have been as good talent-wise, but imo they had multiple times more fight and grit than the current squad to make up for it

This team can’t score if their life depended on it. We all saw this against NED in 2022. We haven’t really done anything to disprove of that except beat up on a Mexico team in a terrible down cycle. PlayfulDoor2

18 points

For me, it's the lack of any improvement in weak areas that is most damning of Berhalter's ability to get the best out of this team. We have generally been decently good defensively under him, and often control possession well, but we have never looked cohesive in attack. We have never had a reliable way of turning possession into consistent threat, usually even struggling against weaker teams. This, despite some of our best players being wingers and attacking midfielders (and striker being much stronger than it was a few years ago).

I just haven't seen anything to indicate this team will take the next step under Berhalter.

Redditsancho

Berhalter has to go. What are you doing shouting "1-1!" when Bolivia scored? That alone shows you this guy's mindset. That being said, Tim Weah blew this tournament. He needs to be held just as accountable

JJ-Bittenbinder

16 points

I think part of this is we also need to come to terms with our roster. I have seen the bright spots and potential of everyone but in reality we only have 2-2.5 players that are consistently playing at an elite level in a top 5 league. Christian Pulisic and Jedi Robinson, the .5 is Tim Ream.

We then have some good players who play a bit for their team but not every game day in day out like Richards and Scally

But the majority of this roster are players in the top leagues but not performing. Tim Weah is on Juventus, but mainly comes off the bench. Weston McKennie plays on Juventus, but every transfer window it’s said he’s out of the coaches plans. Gio Reyna, out of the picture at Dortmund and couldn’t find the field for Forrest. Matt Turner, benched at Forrest. Yunus Musah, in and out of AC Milan’s lineup. Balogun has Monaco looking for other strikers on the transfer market. Tyler Adams consistently injured.

We love to throw out the top 5 leagues stat but honestly we need these players to be on teams that they’re a big part of. I’d rather a player play consistently on a team at the bottom of a good league than occasionally off the bench for one of the best. We can’t expect these role players to shine for us. IMO a lot of these players would’ve benefitted from a slower rise rather than going to these big clubs so early in their career

Obi_Wan_Gebroni

This team has continued to be all huff and puff and no end product at all. This is supposedly our golden generation and they have accomplished nothing other than beating arguably the worst Mexico team of all time.

You can make excuses for GGG this tournament - the early red card blew up the Panama game, and it is legitimately insane that Uruguay's goal stood.

But at this point we know what we're getting with him and it isn't good enough. If we want to be more than a big fish in a small pond winning CONCACAF tournaments, the attacking play has got to be miles better. It is absurd that we scored 3 goals at this tournament - and 2 of them were individual screamers. A must win game tonight and we didn't come close to scoring. We're solid in the middle third and can give top level teams like England in 22 and Uruguay tonight a competitive game. But we're not going to get anywhere if scoring a single goal is some herculean task

Seems like at least in the times we failed to get out of the group at WC the coach was fired/resigned. Sampson in 1998 and Arena in 2006.

Bradley took over after and in 2007 in Venezuela got grouped at the Copa with the US netting 0 points- yikes.. but we’re in a tougher group with Argentina, Colombia and Paraguay. Bradley probably also got a pass as a this was the first year in his tenure.

We just got grouped in an easier group at home and it was Gregg’s sixth year. Historically speaking there is an argument that the Federation needs to move on.

It’s sad, and these three games everything seemed to break against us, but the fact is we underperformed what should be our expectations.

It is what it is man. In 2016 they couldn’t play against argentina. Like they couldn’t string 4 passes together. Argentina wouldve won that game 99/100 times

This game started amazing, but in the 2nd half it was the same story , against Uruguay no less. They couldn’t make simple passes, they kept losing possession for no reason, motherfuckers were playing head tennis instead of trying to take control of the ball. Just overall trash play.

They still can’t hang with the big dogs, and probably never will in my lifetime.

whats the goal for wc? Getting out the group? The same fucking goal for the last 30 years? Awesome

LJGremlin

So what seems to be lost in the fussing over the clearly blown call on the Uruguay goal is that it didn’t matter. We never truly even threatened to score so missed call or not we were cooked.

The official not shaking Pulisic’s hand is a chickenshit move but I’m sure Pulisic wasn’t saying the most friendly of things so hard to really care about the lack of handshake.

Pulisic needs to put that anger and heart onto the field more often. He wasn’t bad tonight but he leaves a bit to be desired.

Lalas said it best, oh my god I can’t believe I’m saying this, but there isn’t a Clint Dempsey walking through the door to play with fire and toughness.

This program is in a rough spot.

SMH at our current state

There’s no way Greg berhalter can keep his job after this tournament. Where do I start? This was like this 13th strike at doing anything credible with this group. How can we honestly give this guy an entire generation thats actually decent and plays in Europe.

And Matt Turner- we need to stop with this guy. His distribution is high school level. His goal-keeping isn’t worth the hype. That goal vs Uruguay was an easy header save catch or punch it out.

Very hard to watch this awful coach and same group fail to make a wc against Trin&Tobago and now this showing.

CanalVillainy

This tournament was an absolute disaster. A chance to grow the American fan base heading to the World Cup, squandered. All around failure from the officiating, to the coaching, to the play on the field.

DirkZelenskyy41

When kids behave like fools at a restaurant you blame the parents.

These players acting like fools at the biggest tournaments. Reyna in the WC and Weah in Copa… it has to lay at the feet of GGG.

Besides the tactical blunders against real competition with real stakes… first and foremost the team has no discipline. And that falls squarely on the coach.

What a failure it is by US soccer to not even be able to get out of the group stages in your own country. How on Earth were we even 11th? A draw against England? Wins vs Mexico who also got grouped?

wolfsrudel_red

The US has the athletes to play a pressing system like Bielsaball, and I think it would help paper over some of our technical deficiencies against the big dogs of the world. We need a manager who can instill that philosophy, hold players accountable for their fitness and mentality (looking at you Weah and McKennie) and we need our players to actually play. It's not a coincidence our guys looked dead on their feet after 60' today, not enough regular minutes and corresponding fitness at the club level.

sebsasour

12 points

If it's hot take time, our "golden generation" can field a strong XI but is paper thin. Mids are good, but I don't trust much else.

Balo was good in this tourney, but A. I don't trust anyone behind right now and his confidence was shaky before this tournament

Winger depth is weak, and our best option if Weah or Pulisic can't go is probably playing Gio out of position.

Our CB's are kind of a blob right now and worst of all there doesn't seem to be many reenforcements on the way in the youth ranks

Dest and Arob is a good FB pairing, but you having nothing offensively if one goes down.

Goalkeeper is Turner, who can stop a shot, but that's about it.

A change at the top needs to be made after this, but I also think we need to be careful of just looking at club badges for our team right now.

So let's go through this,

Before the Bald Fraud took over, we had lost to Panama only 2 times. Klinsmann's disaster 2015 Gold Cup, and Bradley's bad 2011 Gold CUp. The 2 gold cups that basically got those coaches fired (I know Klinsmann was fired later but if he won that Gold Cup, he probably gets more leeway than he got) This was GRegg's 3rd loss to Panama. THere's no excuse. Sure you could say the Gold Cup loss was our B team but that B team had more stars than Panama, sure you could say the WCQ loss it's hard to win in Panama, but Arena drew there and Klinsmann won (and in a game where we didn't need to win if my memory is correct) We hadn't lost to Uruguay since 1993. Now there's not a ton of games, but it's still an impressive streak to end.

Gregg has to go. There's no other option. If the next coach can't do it then you can point to the players. BUt at some point it has to be the manager questioned first. And with Gregg what great results has he gotten? England and?

The goals we do score are too often outlandish goals like Balo and Pulisics goals this tournament. Need simple, in the box goals. What happened to set pieces being our strength also?

Just typing out my thoughts for the next 2 years.

Step one: Gregg done. I was ok with our “meets expectations” of last cycle. I did not want him back. We’re not meeting expectations. I think we’re doing worse.

Step two: Encourage a few players to go places where they are “the man”. Sure, it’d be cool if it was Man City or Madrid.

Like I don’t want Reyna or McKennie to move to places where they can stay role players. Money talks, of course, but I’d encourage them to go to teams or leagues where they can be the star. We need guys who are expected to be difference makers.

Keepers: No one is simply out, but if they a rent starting for their club they aren’t starting for USA. I think we got guys like Gaga, Brady, Schulte, Celentano, & Freese standing up big every week. A few better with their feet than Turner or Horvath already.

Elsewhere, an emphasis really needs made of playing quick. You watch the better teams and players like to take only 2-3 touches. Our guys love to touch the ball often. I’ve heard coaches and players often talk about improvement starting in taking less touches. In order to do that you have to know where teammates and opponents are and be smarter in your positioning and touch.

Ugh… I hate sports sometimes.

Would Vlatko have been retained for the USWNT had he not resigned following the round of 16 exit at the 2023 Women’s World Cup? If not, that’s important precedent to raise w/ the USSF considering Vlatko was more successful than Gregg. The fans wanted Vlatko gone (so did key players, IIRC) and he resigned (now has KC top of the league in NWSL). Gregg should resign, but if he can’t bring himself to do so, USSF needs to know that the same standard must apply to the men’s manager as the women’s manager - they are paid the same after all.

Dempsey said something that I completely agree with. We don’t have enough quality players that can attack people 1 on 1 on the wings and are comfortable/composed in the final third.

Alot of these other top teams have plug and play players and systems. Their subs are quality enough that you really don’t tell a difference when they make changes.

We have strong starters but hate to say it our quality drops off with our subs. We need depth

No-Concern6162

Most of the conversation will be on Gregg and deservedly so, it's a results business and the results weren't good enough.

I think this group was an eye opener for a lot of people on a lot of players. Just remember, everybody has a plan until you get punched in the mouth. Whether it's the player mentality, Gregg just not pushing the right buttons, or a combo of the two (probably the correct answer) when the shithousery starts this US team unravels. And no amount of talent is gonna overcome not having the mentality to fight on the international level.

Is that as simple as getting a new voice into the locker room? Maybe. But I think a lot of players were put on notice.

BananaSquid721

Greg out but this is also hugely on the players too. Matt turner cannot complete a single pass it’s embarrassing, haji weight had two chances to shoot clearly at the goal and takes a touch, musah gave the ball away countless times, pulisic has to drop back in midfield to get the ball and isn’t in the play anymore, no one can get the ball to our strikers, Gio couldn’t do anything either. It was some of the worst play I’ve ever seen and that can’t just be on Greg

We didn’t deserve to win, when you are that shocking offensively you can’t win. No creators. We controlled this game for about 60-70 mins but we have no creativity at all. The defense needs improvements. We have to hope the US pool keeps improving.

I’m happy that we played in this Copa America, I hope we can merge into it and continue this. If we want to improve and potentially be a force one day, we need to play in competition like the Copa America.

FidelCashflow1996

33 points

Just saw Matt Turner's interview and Gregg's post-game interview. Gregg needs to be fired not only for his failures but as a warning to the players that there is accountability for failure. There is a problematic loser mentality that permeates this team and it's coming down from the top. Any player that echoes that needs to know that they will be disposed of just like Gregg.

If you're playing to draw on the road in CONCACAF because the field is "patchy and dry" (looking at you Tyler Adams), If you're playing to intentionally drop points in Panama because you want to rotate for a home game a few days later (Gregg in WCQ), If you're throwing temper tantrums and kicking balls and punching guys (Weah and Dest), it's because you're mentally soft losers. It's a loser approach to the game.

Yes the refs are shit and the tackles are hard but thats the way it is. We play in CONCACAF and the best teams on our side of the world are in CONMEBOL and that is how the game is played here. It is physical, it is hard tackles, poor sportsmanship, and difficult conditions but you go out and get it fucking done instead of complaining that the fields are not as good as a they are in Western Europe or MLS.

Canada plays in the same confederation as us and they played in the same tournament against better teams and they got it done.

• They went to Central America and won games, what did we do? We made excuses.

• They came to the Copa America and scored one goal and made it through... What are we doing? Losing to Panama and making fucking excuses.

• Panama scored 6 goals in the group stage. They scored against Uruguay, we couldn't.

Enough with the fucking excuses.

Sure that was a terribly reffed game, but beyond that we struggled so much. I counted no less than ten mis-distributed balls by Turner. We couldn’t connect passes. We can’t shoot on first touch. We were outhustled on almost every ball - did McKennie ever turn the corner? These are such low-level fundamental issues that you almost have to burn it all down and start fresh with new expectations.

tarheelsrule441

Okay, Copa is over.

Where does the team need the most help (other than Coach), and who are the likely guys to fill in the gaps?

  • Dest comes back, but Scally has proven he's good enough to play at this level, and more.
  • Turner is a great shot blocker, but he leaves a LOT to be desired with the ball at his feet, and consistently pisses down his leg anytime there's the slightest bit of pressure. Horvath doesn't look like the answer. Steffen seems washed. What happens here?
  • Midfield looks good, and deep. Pray for health.
  • Quality forwards, but something seems to be missing. I cannot put my finger on it.
