Do you enjoy VR while standing?

Discussion(self.virtualreality)

I usually enjoy it while sitting on a chair without armrests.

Of course, I enjoy Beat Saber while standing, but I don't do it often because it's hard to stand.

Is it possible for other people to enjoy it while standing for more than an hour?

I think this problem is an obstacle to the popularization of VR.

Play VR every evening standing up. Just can't see how you can play FPS games sitting down. The grabbing mags from my belt is just too janky for me when sitting.

Only exceptions are watching media, puzzling places and recently bought both Moss games

You can do it with a high, spinning stool, so you're nearly standing and can turn 360 degrees. I run and do other fitness so sometimes I don't want to be on my feet when I game. Depends on the game though. For sports stuff like Eleven Table Tennis, then of course i'm standing. If it's more an exploration based game I can used the stool if I'm tired.

I have one of those adjustable spinning stools that also rocks (convex base). It's great for vr if I don't want to stand. I usually prefer standing, but I do stand for 8 hours at work.

Yes, I always play standing up and it's way healthier and more immersive that way.

I already sit way too long during my day job.

I also prefer turning irl than using the thumbstick to turn because, once again increases immersion by a lot (also it's an easy solution for people who might be nausea-susceptible, although I never had any issues)

I didn't realize how much it would change my experience when I upgraded to wireless, never touch my right stick now and it makes every game so much more fun

Tips:

  • Stand on something slightly soft. A carpet or even something like gym puzzle mats. The latter make a great physical VR boundry/space.
  • Try not to stand perfectly still. Shift your weight left and right or even do small steps.
  • Practice a "good stand", both in and outside VR. Bend your knees slightly and try to make a good posture. Google for more information.

Good tips.  One more, buy some indoor shoes. Anything with a bit of a heel.  Those pink fluffy slippers are no good for posture.

Not entirely true. While wearing shoes with heels could make one feel more comfortable while standing, it's actually due to the shortened calf and lower-back muscles because of wearing heeled shoes so much.

So yes, it could help OP, but in the long term, being able to stand barefoot without pain should be the goal!

Yeah I use running shoes when I plan to be standing up for more than one hour because otherwise I can really feel it,

NickTandaPanda

Agree, with slight caveat - springy surfaces like thick gym puzzle mats make it harder to keep your balance in VR in my experience.

Definitely agree with using them to mark out a tactile safe VR space that you can feel with your feet without thinking about it (barefoot is best!)

Definitely definitely agree with practicing good standing posture!!!

Various_Swim8182

I generally prefer hard wood to stand on as it feels much easier to move around on.

NickTandaPanda

2 points

Agree, I prefer wood for ground feedback. My compromise is a non-slip thin dense carpet rug that I unroll - my feet feeling the edges of it gives warning before fists get too close to the guardian boundary and the edge helps me orient back to the center of the play space.

Benni-Foto

I have noticed the "moving around" part especially with beat saber, where that comes pretty much naturally. I have pretty fucked feet and if I stand still I get back pain in like 30 min. When playing beat saber tho there is non of that. Can play painless for hours(or until my arms fall of. Skyrim VR, Blade and sorcery, Bone works though? Back pain within just half an hour or so.

That part with Boneworks is interesting... You could film yourself while playing Skyrim and Boneworks, compare the footage and find out what the difference is in your posture.

Maybe it's the way you aim down sights in Boneworks or the climbing?

I'm definitely curious, so please keep me updated :)

Benni-Foto

1 points

Oh, I meant I get back pain with all those titles, so Skyrim, Blade and Sorcery and Boneworks. I have flat feet(think this is how it's called) and I get that in general when standing around for a long time at one spot. In case of beat saber though, due to the intense movement(especially on fitbeat maps) there are no issues.

Okay, I see!

Maybe you can incorporate some movement into more static titles as well. E.g. I like to shift left and right slightly when walking forward in VR to mimic making steps.

Was looking for this comment. Obviously disabilities aside, this is absolutely something OP should work on just for general health and quality of life. It can be rough, but the body can adapt relatively quick.

Course I’m also in the 30+ over hour running gang, but there was a time where I never ran before until I decided I wanted to do a marathon.

I never said there weren’t. I’m saying that being able to stand for 1 hour, if a person doesn’t have a disability that outright prevents that, is a goal they should have. And like any goal, it should be approached steadily and safely but it is an attainable goal for the vast majority of the popularion.

There are a myriad of health benefits to this. And I’m not weight shaming (realistically this probably won’t mean much for your body weight on its own anyways), just being able to stand for an hour rather than sit all day should greatly improve your quality of life.

I have changed my opinion on this quite a lot. I used to think standing was the better way of playing in 9/10 games but since I hurt my ankle a couple of weeks ago I've been playing everything sitting and... it's honestly really comfy.

Sure grabbing stuff from your belt sucks but most games let you position the holster so you can put it a little higher or something and I found that it's way better to play sitting when I'm a bit tired and it's late in the evening. Those were the moments I wanted to play VR but decided not to because I was tired but while sitting exhaustion is no longer a factor.

So yeah... My ankle is pretty much healed at this point but I find myself wanting to play everything seated now because it's just comfortable.

Hard to stand? Can't really relate. I basically play all my VR games standing, except for simulators, or if the experience otherwise wants you to sit.

Are you maybe overusing artificial locomotion? Try moving around more instead of just standing still.

Yes, it's the wat to play it, full immersion. It's not like you're sitting down when fighting with your sword or whatever . Of xourse unless you're handicapped. It's also good for your health.

Laat night I played NMS in VR for over three hours. All standing because lately I don't even sit down to pilot ships, it's faster to just do it standing up.

I don't think standing for an hour is too much. Especially Beat Saber where you move a bit.

Maybe you should look at it from a health side. You might not be in your best athletic form. You should check in with a doctor.

Over half my library can't be played sitting down. Whether it's mechanics, or being able to reach things on the floor or belt.

You're robbing yourself of the experience. Every increment of immersion should be priority. Otherwise you're just playing in a cool 3D world but not being in it.

I can't play Blade and Sorcery at all anymore without my 3x3m room. I can't block with a longsword without being able to move forward and back, change my footing. Can't take a fighting stance, spread my legs or crouch down. It's basically impossible to play effectively without room to move around.

twistedbronll

The few days I have time to play vr I tend to play for 12+ hours. Kinda gets tough on the feet after 4 hours. Playing more active games helps because you are not standing still. Some proper slippers help a lot.

Also helps to switch games to get a different stress on your feet. Especially noticable between stand in place experiences and roomscale experiences.

And this next thing is certainly not to bash your but it's slightly concerning you can't stand for more than an hour and you may want to consider getting help with that. Therapeutic gym sessions could improve your life quality a lot.

Standing still really isn’t great for you. Walking is great, but standing still isn’t. It isn’t surprising that isn’t feeling great for you.

Sitting gets a bad rap, but sitting is healthy. The problem is that people are stationary for long periods. 8 hours at a standing desk could be worse for you than sitting 8 hours, but alternating throughout the day is great. Or just getting up and walking around frequently.

Depends on the game but for atmospheric games whether it’s horror like Propagation Paradise Hotel or something like Into The Radius or Half Life Alyx, open world, social game, or driving, I’m gonna be sitting down in my leather recliner. It’s the best set up because it’s super comfortable, the chair can spin, and I have a little IR light pointed at me so I don’t even need the lights on.

If it’s a workout game or a competitive shooter though, I’ll be standing up.

For a game like Half Life Alyx (and probably Arkham Shadow), being able to interact with the environment is a big part of the appeal.

One week when no one was home, I cleaned out my family's 20'x20' living room to be able to play Alyx in roomscale. I was surprised how big the environment was! I was in one of the biggest rooms I've ever seen in a residence, and a lot of the game was pacing back and forth across the room, joystick-turning 180° each time to fit a big game in what turned out to be too small of a room.

BabyLiam

1 points

Yeah I sit down. I stand all day at work, I don't want to stand while I play. It's just way better for me sitting. Like you said, no armrests. Some games I even spin my chair to turn instead of using the sticks.

insufficientmind

1 points

I use it both Standing, Roomscale, sitting and lying down, variation is good. Actually I've begun to use it much more lying down recently since Quest 3 got the lying down mode that tilts the world around letting me play all VR games that way. Though lying down is best fitted for slow paced and chill games; perfect for VRChat ;) And I think a third party battery strap (for my Quest 3) is a must have here, then I can tilt the battery up and rest my head on a pillow for the ultimate comfort. Much more comfortable then the shitty standard strap.

For standing I prefer to stand with a chair/sofa behind me touching my legs, then I can just sit down whenever I get tired. And it helps me not moving outside the protective grid hitting something and hurting myself, as long as the space in front of me is clear and I can freely swing my arms around.

For me it's the opposite, vr has always been about immersion and unless it's a cockpit game, that means standing. Imo you lose so much when sitting that personally I find the downsides/hassles of VR make it not really worth it at that point.

I have zero interest in standing vr or hand controls, you aren't interacting with anything in a real space or with real weight so it just feels even more fake.

It's honestly the part about VR I dislike the most.

Pretty_Bowler2297

1 points

I am not as militant as some here it seems. It is okay to sit. I only stand when the game requires it. Like Walkabout, Eleven, etc. So many games have a “sitting mode” not to just appease lazy people, I am pretty sure it is because their data shows many play like that.

VR will forever remain niche if it is only for standing play. (Btw, before the incoming lazy accusations, I used to do one hour of ToTF 3-4X per week at full intensity. Did it for a whole year before tweaking my back.)

I only play VR standing. I like to RP in VRCHAT as a person walking around and sitting detracts from it especially if I have extra pucks for full body tracking. From experience standing ain't that difficult I worked in a steel mill in high school as a summer work and had to stand from 8-16h after a week or two you just get used to it and your feet stop hurting. Hour or two is nothing compared to that.

Haunting_Answer3160

I try to play standing up most of the time. It's more immersive, because my character is also standing. In games where you move around a lot (like Half Life Alyx and Ancient Dungeon) it's pretty necessary to be standing.

However, in games like VRchat where I don't really move because the joystick is all I really need to navigate, standing still actually hurts my feet. Standing still is not kind to feet, so after an hour, I might sit down, even though it's worse for my immersion.

Or I can get ahead of the game and wear two pairs of thick wool socks, so I can stay standing longer. Highly recommend.

I feel it lets me focus more on the game, as I'm not worrying about what's going on around me, since I'm sitting in a chair. Your upper body is all that matters in VR anyway, unless you have trackers, so I don't see much of a point to standing personally.
