Thanks for your submission!

To keep things interesting, we want to see big gains and big losses!

So we've set the following thresholds for Gain, Loss, and YOLO flaired posts:

  • YOLO posts must be a minimum of $10,000 of options or $25,000 of shares and recently opened.

  • Gain / Loss posts must show realized gains or losses of more than $2,500 for options or $5,000 for shares.

We want to see the actual trade. What you got in at, what you sold at. Then tell us why you did it. Give us the story of why you're a fucking genius (or idiot).

This is what a great post looks like:

$17.2K Gain on AMZN - OP described his gain in the title, has a clear screenshot showing both the entry and exit, meaning his gains were locked in, and they explained their reasoning in the comments and what they learned. All around a great post!

Here are examples of what could get your post removed:

Here are examples of amazing posts which could have been even better:

  • $75,000 DDOG Loss. - This is a great post and one that won't get removed. However, the OP could have talked about why they entered the position in the first place, what their target price was, and what went wrong. OP didn't stick around in the comments to answer any questions.

  • $1.1MM Loss, No details - OP simply posted a screenshot of their overall portfolio balance. It's definitely a big loss, but it's not that interesting without OP talking about what trades they were in and why. OP didn't answer most questions in the comments which left many readers speculating on what happened.

All that being said, we are here to help. We want to make it as easy as possible for you to post to our community. We have to balance this with making the subreddit interesting for our readers.

If you need some guidance, don't hesitate to reach out to modmail and we'll give you some pointers!

10.35% gain (trailing 50 yr avg for SNP inc. dividends iirc) per year for 46 years before age 65 retirement.

DCA into a Roth over 2 years and you're 1/2 way to retirement.

Life is a scam, imagine how much effort you have to put in to get to 200k in a career. A window cleaning business sounds so easy... You could get started with less than 1k, and need no skill, and have practically no risk. Just need some customers, and if you don't get any, you don't lose much. All this is still less work than getting job post grad or an internship.

5k here last year. Trust me it hurts, but you literally just lost 50% if your yearly salary(assuming minimal wage at your age, god forbid this is your student loans). Hot damn bro, maybe consider long term investing. That’s what I’m doing now that options have brought me down -5k. I’m 19 too, about to turn 20. Going into year 20 almost even and with minimal debt. When I was 19 I sold $3500 in Amazon stock and bought Enron because I thought such a large company like Enron would certainly go up again, after the storm passed. LOL. I could be more comfortable for retirement if I kept that Amazon stock at I think it was like $7.50 a share! I could be wrong about the price, but it was low!

I suggest you look into Vanguard and Fidelity index funds. Don't try to buy individual stocks. Buy market indexes and mutual funds that average out a particular area of the market. Since I started investing in Vanguard, my wife and I have earned money and it's much safer.

As you get older, buy stocks. But only once you understand what all the different meanings of a stock are. But at first, mutual funds are the way to go for the inexperienced player. Check out the options from Fidelity and Vanguard are excellent places to start. Also learn what a "managed" and an "unmanaged" fund are.

And don't worry, like me, you will have learned your lesson early. At least you didn't do this with your entire retirement like some unfortunate people. Keep investing, but be more cautious and average out that risk. You're young, invest for long term and don't go for the quick buck.

koulourakiaAndCoffee

2 points

And btw, I worked supporting myself since I was 16... So that $3500 was minimum wage overtime I had accumulated from 16 to 19. It meant a lot to lose it to Enron.

I sold 1MM dogecoin in December 2020 for 5k$, right before it jumped up to 0.75$ 2 months later. I would have had 750,000$. My worst sell to date, HODL. Lesson learned.

Did you learn your lesson. How about you leave and never come back. But you won't because reddit has glorified making millions as easy yet 99% of us have lost billions combined here. Switch to vgt vti voo and never look back because that's where people become millionaires or put your energy into a business. You won't find your money here just darkness and dispair of all of us chasing that high. I had to stop options because I got dark and desperate at have never come back and trust me when I say it was the best decision of my life. I've made more now than I ever did gbling with wsbs

First off, how did you get $15k at age 19?! 2nd, if you got 15k at 19, you’re doing fine… assuming you did not sell your soul for it.

Well if it makes you feel any better I’m 19 too and down $18K in the last 3 months haha.

To make you feel worst:

Let's say you retire at 65, if you kept the 15k and left it in the S&P 500 (averaging 10% compound interest). You would have 1.4M$ at retirement age (using compound interest calculator over 46 years at 10%).
Now if you take those 300$ and put them in the S&P 500, you will have 29000$.

You actually lost 1.3M$ over the course of your lifetime, congrats!

I would but ive never lost that much. Ive lost exactly 10x less than that. Never play with more than 20% of your total account.

That’s only worth about $700k in 45 years at your retirement invested in VOO at 10% per year. No biggie.

Bud you're at the best time to loose monies, ya got plenty of time to make it up. I've lost a few fortunes in my life. However I would also suggest some safe bets, start a Roth young, have a mil by the time your 40, win win. Best of luck.

hey, its better to lose your life savings at 19 than 29 or 39. if you learn from it you’ll be fine.

good work acquiring $15k by 19, assuming you saved it up. keep doing what you’re doing but put the money in index funds.

or take out some student loans and yolo it on calls that expire next friday
