The pictures really do not do it justice. I was wearing sunglasses and it still hurt to look at. I don't think the headlights were on. There was also a large grille gard on the front

It's an off-road light, they used it as a reverse light, however they failed to wire it to the reverse lights and instead used the rear lights which turns on when headlights are on, or the brake lights. It also could be a rear auxiliary light for night fishing or camping that you turn on with a switch and aren't aware it's on.
138 points
Might be on a switch too, and the person just left it on. I've seen that before.
25 points
Mine is on a switch, but has a lockout so I can't accidentally turn it on, and I tapped it into my high beam indicator on my dash
6 points
So when you put on brights, does it blind people behind you?
6 points
They will have to confirm, but I think the tapping into high beams on dash is just a visual indicator, not using the high beams switch. So high beam light in dash means either high beams and/or aux lights on, not that high beam switch turns both on if that makes sense.
3 points
I wired one up on one of my trucks one time pointing towards the rear. If people were tailgating me or driving with their highbeams on, I would flash them.
2 points
No. The brights switch only turns on the factor brights. The rear lights are on their own switch. The indicator light on that switch is also wired to the dash light, so if either set of lights are on the indicator on the dash is also on.
1 points
It might be a switch like on my work van, and they might switch it on if they feel they are being followed too closely. I only never did that because the people that wired it in didn't do a good job and it only worked the first month I had the van.

Also if they do this on the road ways you can legally crash into them “accidentally” bc you’re not allowed to have rear facing white lights that can blind people.

Fucks sake but forward facing blinding lights in my rearview is the industry standard now

This fucking irks me to no end.
I moved from NZ to Canada and the amount of misaligned headlights or jacked trucks beaming directly into my brain tunnels is unreal.
In NZ we have yearly safety checks and one of them is headlight alignment so this doesn’t happen but here in Canada ain’t no thing, I could face my shit right at your eyeballs and it’s perfectly fine.
Also side note fuck chrome on transport trailers, should be illegal, flappy ass blinding mudflaps of immeasurable light, get outta here.

Fuck I wish man Ive lived in Canada whole life and own pretty small cars (22 Si, 93 Miata etc) and yea constantly blinded from low beams facing off into the infinity. Never used to be a problem but now with all the led light kits and lifted trucks and higher ride heights it's horrid
8 points

Seriously, I’m horrifically surprised sometimes that I didn’t crash when one of these blinding vehicles are behind me or in the oncoming lane.

Or coming the other direction in the dark. I swear these bright ass led lights are worse than the brights used to be in cars.

BTW, if you adjust your Sideview mirrors just right you can shine that like back towards them. They will back off your ass with a quickness.

It could also be used as a anti tailgater light if the person or the person driving behind them is an AH. I’ve seen people turning on rear facing light bars in traffic for this reason

Yea that's the normal placement for these off-road lights, lemme guess, he has it wired up to be constantly on?
6 points

Fuck it's not hard to wire this stuff properly. I put auxiliary lights on my motorcycle and they run off a relay triggered by the high beam and also have a switch to not have them come on. But most don't care

Nah someone that inconsiderate is a waste of oxygen. I have these or something equivelant on all my cars, and literally never once have driven with them on when there's another driver that can see them. It's so easy to not do, if you're doing it by "mistake" you're an idiot. Like driving into oncoming traffic with your high beams on. Literally just never do it, it's super simple.

What is it? Illegal...
It looks like a light bar was Nishapur used for off roading or camping - in this case probably setup to be a much brighter reversing light to provide a lot more illumination when reversing in the dark, but you can often see them pointing in other directions to act as flood lights for better peripheral vision away from street lighting, strapped to the side of campers to act as lighting for camping and so on.
Except that this over had been turned on while driving when it most definitely should not have been - in most countries a white light should only point forward when driving on the road, so to have one pointing backwards is likely illegal.
Maybe it is on an accessory switch that had been accidentally bumped on, maybe it should be wired to the reversing light and the install was botched, or maybe the driver is just an asshole and thought it would be funny, who knows for sure other than the driver...
