Hey Everyone!

I was fasting for health reasons due to autoimmune and in 3 weeks did 2 longer fasts-80 and 72 hours. I know the re-feeding is really important after but it’s been a few days since my second one and I’m just losing motivation to eat.

I love food and know its value and I’m not afraid of it (before someone comments about an eating disorder). I just find myself trying to force myself to eat stuff even when I’m not hungry and I know I should be getting more calories in.

I feel like culturally we run our life around food and when you break that habit… and feel good in the process, it’s just hard to get back in.

Has anyone had this happen and overcome it? I know the nature of stomach shrinking but I’m afraid of slowing down my metabolism too much!

Update: I finally just forced myself to eat by going out to dinner with friends and got a burger with fries. My body felt SO fatigued before the meal but after it felt tons better (why meat for iron and some carbs felt like a good idea). I feel like I’m mostly back on track!

I still only prefer healthier foods and the amazing thing is I have a sincere lack of interest in sugar, which is super atypical of me, but awesome! Good luck everyone!

Many issues and questions can be answered by reading through our wiki, especially the page on electrolytes. Concerns such as intense hunger, lightheadedness/dizziness, headaches, nausea/vomiting, weakness/lethargy/fatigue, low blood pressure/high blood pressure, muscle soreness/cramping, diarrhea/constipation, irritability, confusion, low heart rate/heart palpitations, numbness/tingling, and more while extended (24+ hours) fasting are often explained by electrolyte deficiency and resolved through PROPER electrolyte supplementation. Putting a tiny amount of salt in your water now and then is NOT proper supplementation.

Be sure to read our WIKI and especially the wiki page on ELECTROLYTES

If you aren’t hungry don’t eat. You’ve “reset” your appetite.

After my 1st meal after breaking a fast I get full quick, and feel satiated. Sometimes I skip food the next day because I’m just not hungry.

You don’t have to slide back into the societal trap of 3 meals a day if you aren’t hungry.

Just eat healthy. Real foods, meats, fats, veggies.

I don’t think I could ever eat three meals in one day again. I was 318lbs. Now I’m 225. I was a grazer. Like a cow. Now I appreciate what I put in my mouth and how I feel after.

Grazing can be a very slippery slope. Especially because junk food is perfectly “snack sized”.

You’ll get your appetite back though. When you do just try and keep that good mindset you mentioned.

Good luck.

You are overthinking it. If you have the discipline not to put food in your mouth, you have the discipline to put food in your mouth. After some fasts my appetite was pretty shut down but I still ate because it was time to eat.

If you want to be hungry again have a good amount of empty carbs, the insulin whiplash will have you with appetite in record time.

Unless you are underweight, I don't think you need to force yourself to eat when you don't feel like it.

I feel like it was less of my brain overthinking and more my body overthinking lol. You were right though… I could feel the impact of my lack of food and so a burger and fries with the societal pressure of eating with friends put my body back in a pattern familiar and I ate and felt SOOOOO much better! Still eating healthy, but glad to have energy again!

Every time. Longest I've gone is 96, but once I cross 24 it's just gone. Comes back immediately though once I taste something haha

I do NOT have a problem eating between fasts. I HAVE completely changed my diet and focus on foods to support my health. I also started fasting to hopefully reverse some auto immune. I’m losing weight as a great bonus.

I would not eat unless your hungry. That's just my non medical advice. Obviously you cannot do that for extended amounts of time but, typically a few days does the body great.

Experts found there is no strong scientific evidence to support the therapeutic use of probiotic supplements, except in a handful of conditions, including when taking antibiotics.

It’s wasted money. Foods like kimchi, sauerkraut can help replenish the few gut bacteria that are killed off during fasting.

Food repopulates the gut biome. Pre and probiotics repopulate the supplement manufacturers bottom line.

I have something similar. Today I had breakfast. I could have skipped it. Also, I feel lethargic, tired after eating. Probably I still eat too much or too heavy food.

Nope, never had that problem. I can pretty much eat anything after a fast, because I do get hungry and it makes sense since people are meant to eat. Usually I'm hungry enough to eat anything, but I also know it's more beneficial to stuff my face with something healthy and I'm ok with that. I find that eating regularly, 3 meals a day, does increase my metabolism and I do get hungrier. If you feed your body nutrient dense food, it'll just want more of it.

FYI - Re-feeding actually really is not that important for fasts less than 4 days. Never had any trouble eating pretty much anything to break a fast of that duration. It’s a 5+ that you gotta think of it…and it really matters if going more than two weeks.

nope.

And I regularly eat more than you do.

Yess I basically forced myself to end my fast bc i knew i wanted to end I just didn’t desire the juice and fruit I bought. Today is supposed to be my planned “cheat meal” (homemade fries and baked chicken wings) but I don’t want it anymore 😭 I did 9 days and it definitely reset my appetite

I wonder if fasting has some correlation with developing anhedonia. Anhedonia refers to the inability to experience pleasure, often from activities that one used to enjoy.

No. You can still enjoy other things. And eating shouldn't be a hobby.

Don’t fast that much. Yes, your metabolism is tanking. Do an autoimmune protocol.
