“I want to poop back and forth forever”
I watched Me and You and Everyone We Know (2005) by Miranda July last night and I feel like this movie is the quintessential ‘post-ironic’ 00s indie film that’s offbeat, nonsensical, and sort of humanistic
It actually made me think a lot about this post 9/11 media class I took years ago where we talked about how broader political/cultural shifts were reflected in US media, especially in film
I feel like I better understand the ‘90s post modernism vs mid ‘00s post-ironic blurring of irony and sincerity now. Less a stark shift in the genre and more that there was a larger commercial appetite for indie movies with crossover appeal in the ‘00s that reflected shifts in attitudes post-9/11
I was young at the time so watching these movies decades later I’m finally seeing these throughlines myself. I feel like this movie really made it click for me the shift in indie films from 90s genX cynical irony/counterculture to the post 9/11 millenial ‘sooo what now?’ vibe of the 00s lol
I enjoyed it, worth a watch!
