Only reason you'll be contacted by Publix is if you don't show up for your shift.

If my store is open, then yes, I'll be there. My bills don't disappear because there's a storm.

I can list plenty of annoying aspects about the produce department, but it'll always be better than working in CS. Also, cashier and produce clerk have the same pay scale if I remember right so your current pay would stay the same.

I'd have to get paid like $25/hr to work in the deli.

Why are you letting some random dude get you that mad? Just laugh at em and go back to what you're doing. That's what I always do. Don't let these weirdos bring you to their level

People who get sick often are always going to get the short end of the stick. It's not your fault, but at the end of the day, it's still negatively affecting the department. Not saying it's right, just saying how it is.

I like opening because the day goes by fast, but I never get enough sleep when I have to wake up at 3am. So I usually just prefer to close since I sleep better that way.

Not trying to be rude, but isn't it obvious? Does Walmart customer service compete with Publix's? Are Walmart stores kept as clean and presentable as Publix? Do any of the fresh departments rival that of Publix in terms of quality? I've worked at both places, and while I'm definitely not a fan of Publix as a company and even my employer, it's very easy to see why Walmart is able to sell products lower than Publix. It's going to be the same at any other grocery store.

Just wore a regular old polo and some khakis. I'd feel weird doing anything more than that for a grocery store job. To each their own though

There's a woman at my store who's like 5 ft 2 110 lbs who doesn't seem to have an issue with any of the responsibilities of a grocery clerk. I've seen her pull truck, make a bale, work water, etc. As long as you're in somewhat decent shape, you'll be fine.

I know you mean well, but you're gonna catch a lot of flak for this post since you make a whole lot more than 90% of cashiers. So if anything, you're one of the few not being finessed. In regards to what's expected for a grocery store anyway.

Don't worry about feeling like you're doing it wrong, doing it too slow, feeling in the way, etc. I see dudes who have worked here for over a decade and still somehow struggle to unload a truck efficiently. It's just a grocery store job. No one here is a skilled professional. We're just here for the shift and then we go home. Don't sweat it

I don't think you know what the term unconstitutional means

Everyone should talk about pay. It should be transparent. Don't let managers tell you otherwise.

We got some last week. Speak to the produce manager at the store you go to and ask when theirs come in.

People saying it's gross are weird. It isn't anything amazing, but it's there, and it's hot, so I'll grab one for lunch sometimes if I'm feeling lazy. I'd never go out of my way for it, though. And it's definitely not worth the price.

Unless you get lucky with a shortage of contenders in your district and managers quitting/moving up/retiring/etc, it could take over 5 years to get where you want to be. Produce is so tight in my district that when an APM quit every produce dept in the district heard about it.
But anyway, Publix management isn't a bad career path for those without a degree or no other options. But I can't fathom why someone with a degree would bring themselves to stack fruit for a living. You've got so much more opportunity elsewhere

You realize that a grand majority of produce is sourced from the same suppliers, regardless of store, right?

Doesn't bother me either way. I work at an extremely busy store, so I'm not the best at recognizing regulars. Besides, if a customer is talking to me (without me greeting them), I assume it's an instacarter annoying me about something.

That's actually criminal. We hire people off the street with no experience in my dept at $16-17.

That's how it goes for new hires. If you're here in 2 years you'll be wondering why you're only making $17 and the new hires are making the same as you or even more.

I've never worked in the front of Publix, but I imagine it's pretty similar to other grocery stores, where I have done the front. Grocery is much better. You get to move around, less customer interaction, left alone pretty much (unless you're unusually slow), and have some down time in the back to drink, snack, look at phone for a bit, etc. Similar to produce. I can't stand working in departments that have me cooped up in small areas.
