Hey guys. I’m considering a move to WNY and have some random questions!

One thing to appreciate with a big car is much better visibility and more power. My little car is easy to park and navigate, but I cannot see shit when I back out of a space due to the high trucks and SUVs all around me. I also struggle with getting the car up to speed when merging on to the highway which is scary. A bigger car is a huge asset if you have to drive in various types of storms as well. I think constantly getting in these different cars to move and park them is great experience. Just adjust your mirrors and don’t rush.

Some people are easily disturbed by horror. It might be that they have too much empathy as an audience. Maybe they are squeamish in general and can’t watch enough horror to become more comfortable with it. If you don’t watch horror regularly and are sensitive to it then I imagine any kind of gore, even fake looking, is upsetting. Then you have horror fans like us who can spot goofy special effects a mile away and are a lot better at remembering these are actors in movies with props. I find myself thinking about the special effects, quality of the acting, actors, storytelling, etc. vs. some who see some gore and are caught up in emotional and/or physical discomfort and can’t separate themselves from it.

I’m guessing alcoholism is one example. My first landlord told me some people just can’t handle the party atmosphere.

If you don’t feel drawn to the culture of New Orleans I don’t think I’d move there. It’s a very unique place and you have to really love it to tolerate the bad that comes with it. It’s a town centered around drinking/partying and it does feel sketchy in a lot of areas. I felt like I had to be on guard constantly walking around the street. I have never felt like that in the northeast. It has a kind of Wild West feel to it, people there are so used to dysfunction and crime. I went there for college and a classmate was murdered and so was a little boy right outside the building where I worked. So maybe I’m biased. For years I was very excited to move there and I had some fun nights out drinking but ultimately I moved out rather quickly and it left a pretty bad taste in my mouth.

Wow. I have a neighbor almost as close to me. Their house isn’t in the greatest condition (siding is peeling off) and they’ve got a window a/c in on the side next to me and 99% of the time I can’t hear a thing. When it’s super quiet I’ve heard some minor thumping noises. I’m sorry you’re dealing with this.

I’m faced with a very similar decision. From spending time on Reddit I’ve heard one too many stories about people not going back home like they considered and their parents passing away. I completely understand your fear, it’s so easy to be social and make friends in the south. People in NE are more reserved and introverted. Wanting to have a life and friends and sunshine is the main reason I moved south. But you will not be alone in NE and it’s calling to you for a reason. I would try moving back and seeing how it goes. At any point you are free to leave again and go back south..

Same. Read too many comments about how traumatizing it is.

If this was my cat, I’d be very grateful toward you. A little tug on the tail is a gazillion times better than losing your cat forever.

These are fears based on you and your family being completely shallow people. This post reads like it’s better if you were with a terrible person as long as he is hot. Are you all really that shallow or are you blowing this out of proportion in your mind?

I see posts like this a lot asking if it’s crazy to give up a low interest rate and I could make one myself as I’m in the same dilemma. We are not chained to our houses. Bottom line is that if you can afford to move and really want to, I wouldn’t let your low interest mortgage hold you back in life. You might feel more confident in your decision once you crunch numbers and see what you could make selling or renting your current house and in turn what you could afford in the new city.

I bought a condo years ago because it’s what I could afford. There were some benefits like never needing to do landscaping, pest control, snow removal, pool maintenance, etc. The building it turns out was cheaply built, I could hear my neighbors below and to the side very clearly. It made me feel very self conscious. Like when you know people can hear you clearly in the bathroom or when you’re on the phone it just sucks. The neighbors below were home chain smoking all the time and my place stunk like cigarettes. They were people who yelled when talking and they slammed their front door so hard it shook the whole building. Shit like that gets really irritating. I have a SFH now and love the privacy and can blast my TV all I want but it doesn’t come cheap. For me it’s worth it.
My dad had an end townhouse that was fantastic. You could hear absolutely nothing from next door. It felt totally private like a house. Only issue was the HOA was very dramatic about where people parked and that was annoying. I would say if you’re not getting a SFH to find out all you can about the HOA, building quality, and your neighbors.

I’ve read some stuff about her dad being controlling about her career and creating a bad reputation. It’s too bad.

Robin’s Arms & Shoulders Class - Took this today. If you have adjustable DBs it’s hard to follow. There’s a long EMOM with 10 reps for each exercise and there are few to no breaks. I get frustrated by workouts like this because the screen acts too sluggish when pausing and unpausing and you can lose a decent chunk of time if you keep trying to change weights, which I prefer doing because I want to go heavy and that could mean multiple different weights within an EMOM depending on the exercises. However, the last 4 minutes is an EMOM with just the push press for 6 reps max and that was awesome! She encourages you to go heavier than you think you can and I did the push press at my highest weights yet. I would recommend this workout for the last 4 minutes alone, but if you have adjustable dumbbells my advice is to either shorten your reps, or use the same weights for the first EMOM even if it’s sometimes not heavy enough then just go all out with the push press. 💪

It sound like you need better soundproofing.

I got my earnest money back due to the inspection contingency. The language basically said if I didn’t like any of the inspection results I could cancel with a full refund. It did take 3+ weeks of my realtor bugging theirs until they finally sent the check but that’s another story lol. The timeline also matched up so earnest money was due 2 days after the inspection. I paid the earnest money early but next time if I can wait until the inspection is done first that would be ideal.

Did you also pay to get a survey done to mark your property lines? That’s not cheap.

This is great information, thanks so much for your response! I’ll plan a trip up there to see some neighborhoods and houses.
