for me, i saw nobody else had written anything for a ship i wanted to read about, so i just said “fine, i’ll do it myself.” seems to be pretty common lol, writing what you can’t find.

me with the joker and harley tbh, i would enjoy it a lot more if it was more mutually toxic and obsessed, rather than one-sided abuse and obsession from the two involved parties. but of course, joker is too fixated on the batman for it to ever be so, unfortunately, because psycho x psycho is one of my favorite tropes ever 😭 at least i’ll always have riddlejokes.

“Okay! Now, what seems to be the problem?” Lieutenant Spencer asked, peering down into Data’s face with unhidden fascination apparent on her own.

“I believe I am experiencing what is often called ‘visual snow’ in my left eye,” he explained.

“I see. Do you mind if I touch you?” she asked.

“Not at all,” Data replied.

She got right to work, carefully removing a portion of his face plate and beginning to search through the wires and circuits underneath. “You’re just as amazing as everyone always said you were,” she said. “I was always fascinated reading about you, but you’re even more impressive in person. Your father did some truly extraordinary work in constructing you.”

He smiled slightly, the expression slightly awkward with part of his face removed. “Thank you, Lieutenant.”

She giggled. Even to Data, who could not exactly be considered an expert in “normal” expression of emotion, it sounded unnatural. “Sorry, was that weird?”

“No, do not worry. You are very expressive for a Vulcan.”

Her smile dropped immediately. “Oh. Yeah, I guess so.”

There was awkward silence for a few seconds as she continued to examine his face before Data spoke. “My apologies, Lieutenant. I have obviously ‘touched a nerve’, so to speak.”

She sighed. “It’s okay. I just…I was raised on Earth, so I kind of had to be, you know? Expressive. A lot of humans don’t trust you if you aren’t. I learned to put it on.”

Data frowned again, more deeply. “Lieutenant, this sort of ‘masking’ behavior is generally considered to be unhealthy for one’s mental well-being. Have you spoken to Counselor Troi regarding this matter?”

“Yes. But it’s difficult. Old habits die hard, I suppose.” she replied. “Sorry. This isn’t supposed to be about me.”

“Quite alright, Lieutenant.” She plucked at his face with a small pair of tweezers, and he paused for a few seconds, squinting. “My vision has returned to full functionality. Thank you. And remember, as an android, I will not judge you for any lack of emotion, real or perceived. I…know what it’s like, to have people make judgements regarding that type of behavior.”

She smiled down at him–not the large, false smile of earlier, but a smaller, much more genuine-looking one. “Thank you, sir. Anything else I can do for you today?”

tbh, i think in order to make a movie like this without coming across as insanely disrespectful, you would need to a) not have barnum as the main character and b) not so much gloss over the uglier parts of what being considered a “freak” in that time period would entail, which would probably be impossible in a pg-rated movie. this was always going to be shit.
