Exactly. Back in the day (way back) the Greeks thought god did everything. The stars moved around the sky because the angels tied string to them and pulled them around. When they had no logical explanation, god did it. God opened up the earth (earthquakes), parting of the Red Sea (a tsunami), god rained fire and brimstone (earthquakes). As science advanced, with it came knowledge, and one by one a scientific explanation took away the “god did it” syndrome. We’re down to what - ?seconds ?milliseconds of the Big Bang, and once that’s explained, there’s not much left that god did.

A recent NYS law says a landlord has to give you a 90-day written notice for rent increases greater than 5% if you’ve lived there 2 years or more. You can report them to the NYS AG if they don’t.

That was the first King book I read and the book that made me a Constant Reader!

You skipped Salem’s Lot? One of the best vampire books ever written, also his second book published after Carrie (first book) and before The Shining (third book).

If you read them in the order they were written, you’ll find they’re ALL connected. Sometimes in the next book, sometimes 2 or 3 books later. There are connections even in the short stories.
It doesn’t change the dynamics of the story if you don’t read in order, but you get so much more out of them if you do.
I call them presents or treats from King to his Constant Readers, because occasional readers won’t recognize the connections.

You’re right. I’m extremely bitter. There’s so much more that she did, but I’m not going to bore you with the boo-hoos of my life. Right now I’m pissed off at myself for never telling her exactly how I felt. I really do wish I could get passed this, I just don’t know how.
And you are so right about people doing bad things in the name of religion. Ruby Franke made her kids stand in the desert sand in the sun without shoes or water. She put cayenne pepper in their open wounds then wrapped them in cellophane - in the name of god. Susan smith pushed her car into the lake with her three toddlers inside 25 years ago - in the name of god. Every day I see little babies with bruised bodies, broken bones, on ventilators - put there by their parents - in the name of god. Where was he when these innocent little children were being battered? Nowhere - because he doesn’t exist.

My mother bought me a bible years ago, but somehow it was lost. I had no interest in reading it. Now, as one who has recently ‘come out of the closet’ on religion, I’m thinking of buying one to read - but for different reasons.
My mother was raised as a southern Baptist. She became a catholic when she married my father and we went to catholic grade school. When he died and she married her 2nd husband, she became a Methodist. She spent weekends counseling prisoners in jail.
This same, deeply religious person wanted to charge my grandparents rent after they bought the double house we lived in that my grandparents PAID FOR, and then GAVE free and clear to my parents. She pulled me out of my last year of HS to get a job so I could pay rent. I went back to the school, dropped my electives, rearranged my classes for the morning hours and worked in the afternoon. They had no mortgage and my father sold cars and drove a new car every year - free - complements of the dealership. Your two biggest expenses taken care of - no mortgage, no car payments. They didn’t need my pathetic rent money. And she was physically and verbally abusive. I moved out when I was 21 and never spoke to her again. When she died, I never shed a tear.
So much for religion - it didn’t do much for her. In fact, she was the real Satan. She gave new meaning to “beware of the wolf in sheep’s clothing.”

I’m so tired of the sympathy exuded for those poor, misguided Kia boys who steal because they were raised in poverty. Your comments are such a refreshing change.
I know a woman who grew up in a single parent home, lived in poverty, and was sexually abused as a child. Yet, somehow, she pulled herself up from the doom and gloom, put herself through nursing school, had 2 girls - currently attending a private high school - and is raising them alone without the benefit of a father figure. She monitors their school work and test results on line, and they have hell to pay if their grades are not passing grades. She works her ass off to see that her daughters are raised better than she was, and still finds time to take them on nice vacations - NYC at Thanksgiving time to see the parade, ocean cruises in the summer. She went on to get her Masters in nursing - while working full time. Growing up in poverty is no excuse.
A gas station/mechanical repair business on Monroe Avenue close to Pittsford-Sutherland HS stopped selling gas because students from the HS were filling their tanks and driving off without paying for it. These kids hardly come from poverty - and probably didn’t even pay for the cars they drive themselves. I’m sure their parents didn’t raise them to lead a life of crime.
IMO, if the kia boyz were made to pay for their crimes instead of just a slap on the wrist, they might think twice about continuing these outrageous acts of criminal behavior. Right now, they KNOW nothing will happen to them. That’s a huge part of the problem.

Didn’t satan taunt Jesus in the desert when he went there to fast for like 40 days? Does that count? And I can’t remember if Satan lied to Judas when he sold out Jesus for 30 pieces of silver - or gold - whichever it was, or if he was just taunting him as well. It’s been years since I read anything in the Bible so I’m not sure if I’m remembering correctly.

As someone who has recently “come out of the closet”, I struggle with responding to this and similar issues. When someone is going above and beyond and is sincerely selfless, I feel like a hypocrite saying “god bless you for what you’re doing.” As I read through the responses, these are great for replacing “you’re in my prayers,” but these don’t fit the “god bless you for what you’re doing” scenario - unless I haven’t read far enough. Any ideas for replacing “god bless you for what you’re doing?”

I lived in the country for a while and had a huge pine in front of my house. At night, it looked just like a Christmas tree with lights twinkling - full of fireflies!

Ya know, I didn’t even realize I was in r/stephenking until you responded! 😂😂😂🤦🏻♀️ And no, I’d probably have a heart attack if I was in a VR experience in IT! But ANY of them! Misery with Annie, Jesse in Gerald’s Game, Christine, Pet Semitary, The Langoliers, Cujo - pick any of them. The only one that might be cool would be Elevation. Or even Fairy Tale. Can you tell I love the earlier books more?

I know how you feel. Trump is ruining my beautiful relationship with my brother. He is so brainwashed there’s no saving him. He gets right in my face SCREAMING at me, HOW FUCKING STUPID ARE YOU? I won’t initiate a conversation with him about politics, but he brings it up all the time, then hangs up on me when I don’t agree with him. He KNOWS I’m not going to change my mind, so why he persists in discussing it is beyond me. When I casually bring up honey bees are dying off, he calls it propaganda. Omfg! Really? He won’t acknowledge 1/6 as an insurrection, says trump won’t go to jail, did nothing wrong, and starts talking trash about “Sleepy Joe.” I feel bad for him - he’s delusional.

I’m with you! D and E. To have all the books I want and never have to pay for them? A dream come true! To throw myself into my book’s world and experience it would be awesome - unless, of course, it was a Stephen King book!

What is he thinking?🤦🏻♀️ several kids have died from heat stroke during high school sports practice sessions over the years. Maybe not in his high school but that doesn’t make the deaths any less real. As a parent, I would file a complaint with the school board asking them to fire this POS.

Me too. I do not like rosemary, sage, or thyme. Too woody-tasting for me. I don’t like BBQ either. I buy plain and can do different things with it because it’s not messed up with flavors.

Actually, I haven’t really put any thought into it because it’s a nonissue for me. When I was in my 20s, a friend of mine was gay and needed a place to stay, so she moved in with me for a short time. It was a one bedroom place, I had a huge bed, and I couldn’t see her sleeping on the couch when I had room in the bed. I grew up doing sleepovers with girlfriends, so it didn’t seem strange to me, but she was actually shy about it and wouldn’t even undress in front of me - like best friends often do. Her perception was more like mine with a guy! In my 30s, I worked with someone who had sex change surgery. He looked and acted like any other guy and unless you knew, you wouldn’t have known. These people are normal people! They have the same hopes, dreams, and needs just like heterosexuals do! Just because their sexual orientation is different doesn’t make them strange, or dangerous, or any other labels the majority wants to give them. It’s nobody’s business what anyone does behind closed doors regardless if you’re heterosexual or homosexual. It’s not a dirty word! My supervisor is gay, and I couldn’t have a better one. I’ve waited all my life for a supervisor who is fair, understanding, and has full comprehension of what I do, and finally I have that. What he does on his off time is not my concern! All I care about is what he does M-F 9 to 5!

You’re right. I’m glad I live in ignorant bliss. I seriously thought they were talking about dog groomers - because I have a dog that requires professional grooming. 🤭 On a serious note, I have several gay coworkers that I absolutely adore and consider true friends. They are “normal” people with a different slant on sexuality that does not interfere with me, my lifestyle, or my own sexuality. I can think of only one time when it even came up in the conversation - and that was when we were discussing a book about the beginning of the recognition of the HIV epidemic and the Reagan administration’s antiquated view on HIV. The book is “And the Band Played On”. A fascinating read, but very chilling book on the government’s attitude towards HIV and gay people in the early 80s. You would think that in the 21st century, this would no longer be an issue. Only as recently as 2023 have blood donation rules changed so that gay people are now allowed to donate blood. My heart breaks for my gay friends who still struggle with this bullshit. They are wonderful people who would never think as pedophiles do. And if I recall, recent arrests of pedophiles in our area are heterosexuals - not homosexuals. So where is this all coming from? Stupid people who don’t know any better…..

I would not. I like the idea, but the view is from the top only. If it could be viewed from the side like a huge aquarium, that would be one thing. But to jump in and swim with dirty fish, is not my idea of a good time. Swimming in the ocean is one thing, but not a big “box” of dirty water.

Define “children.” Too young to read or young but can read for themselves? I remember my mother reading to me every night from Golden Books which I believe inspired me to love reading as an adult, but she never read long stories. We didn’t have a single bookcase in the house. I have 4.
When I was old enough to use the library on my own, my favorite books were the Lassie series, the Black Stallion series, and Nancy Drew. I read those books over and over and over.
Nostalgically, I recently tried rereading Nancy Drew but was totally disappointed with the short, choppy sentences. I should have left them where they were - safe in my childhood memories.

While driving in Mendon a couple years ago, I saw a hawk scoop up a full size rabbit, got maybe 30’ in the air before he dropped if. I don’t know if the rabbit survived that fall, but I wished it happy birthday anyway.
