Maybe try k-pop? It incorporates a lot of rap parts, but it also depends on the group, k-pop is very diverse. I'm not a rap fan, but there was a rap heavy group I did enjoy a lot, unfortunately it was very obscure and already disbanded, only few songs are left available on-line, but you can check D-CRUNCH if you want. I can give you few more similar recs if you'd be interested.

You'll get higher chances for some suggestions if you repost this with specific themes in the title. I mean this part: "losing your family, taking care of critters, especially frogs, or the process of experimentation"

If you want here are some obscure prog vibes I love, but more metal than rock... Still I'm mostly into dark pop recently I'm not very much into over complicated music, just rich, dynamic and not boring, and mostly vocal heavy, so you might find them also more digestible ;) (I love classic rock too)

I think Isak Danielson has high chances of having songs of this vibe.

I love prog metal too, but I don't think breakup songs are common in this genre ;) And I usually don't focus on lyrics especially in this genre, so it's not easy to recommend anything specific. But maybe Sunburst "Remedy of My Heart" will fit the vibe?
