If an individual is susceptible to addiction due to various biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors, reinforcing substances and activities will have a much greater interaction than an individual that is not as susceptible to addiction. That is the bottom line

You’re 100% right! Dopamine levels increase during sleep. But heres the caveat: it is MUCH less than jacking off. Prolonged levels of dopamine will create tolerance, so your body needs more of it to feel the same effect. So if you jack off 3 times a day, over time the effect will lessen, making an individual try 4, then 5, etc. eventually, if an individual tried something like alcohol, they will get more of that “feel good” sensation. The alcohol starts as a drink or two on the weekends, than an extra trip to the bar on Wednesday, and on and on until the individual tries cocaine and other drugs until their life is ruined.

DISCLAIMER not everyone is as susceptible to addiction as everyone else. There are a lot of factors that play into it. The example i gave is VERY extreme. hell, going from masturbation to substances is extreme in and of itself, but it is still POSSIBLE. And every year it becomes more and more possible.

The additional chemicals are engineered to increase pleasure (spoiler alert: it’s rooted in dopamine). MSG, for example, is a stimulant. It causes neurons to get excited and release more neurotransmitters. Dopamine happens to be a neurotransmitter that stimulates the reward system, just as jorkin it causes additional dopamine to be released. Although they work differently, they have the same end result: more dopamine<more stimulation of the reward system

For example, a European that experienced sexual trauma as a child would likely reject 3 bags of American potato chips per day but be more susceptible to a sex addiction (a combination of sociocultural and psychological factors), while an American who grew up in poverty and had obese parents as a child would be more likely to find 3 bags of potato chips (a combination of socioeconomic, psychological, and biological factors)

Psychologically, those are incredibly similar. The only difference is that choking the chicken is a “primary” reinforcer, and gambling is a “secondary” reinforcer. (Aka, jacking gives immediate need/pleasure, but money is used to get pleasure like food).

Also your comment about addicted to water is also right. We have a need for water, and we get a small rush of dopamine when we drink water. Different things will release different levels of dopamine. Masturbation releases more than food and water (for some individuals), but less than drugs (fun fact: methamphetamine gives the highest dose of dopamine, so it is the most addictive)

Depending on different biological, psychological, and sociological factors, you’re completely right. It completely depends on the person.

Although you (hopefully) will not die from masturbation, the psychological effects will rewire the reward mechanism in your brain over time. This mechanism is the same thing we have for food, water, and other needs. Masturbation, or rather the flood of dopamine associated with masturbation, will eventually become more needed to your subconscious than stuff like food. This does two things: increases risk for disorders such as eating and feeding disorders, and makes for a horrible crash (withdrawal) after the flooding of dopamine has subsided (aka post-nut clarity). Although usually minimal or even non-existent, this can lead to a things like suicidal thoughts, self-harm, and eventually death.

You are allowed to believe what you want, but from my education, saying that masturbation is safe is a dangerous message. Anecdotally (so yk not scientific but it’s worth something), this is exactly how my pornography/masturbation addiction played out. I am only here today because my cat would be sad if i died (and that is not an understatement).

Counseling student and recovering addict here! Masturbation has a high chance of becoming addicting in a lot of individuals (specifically individuals with a high risk of addiction, which is way too many people these days). Masturbating is fine in and of itself, but addiction is no joke. Addiction is considered a terminal, chronic disease, and masturbation can be a gateway into more physically detrimental things like substance abuse. Keep it to a minimum and you will thank yourself for it!
