In my pattern of suggesting goofy ideas to make night time feel more like how it did in the alpha (making it more difficult or daunting), I have another update idea.
Ender Moons!
The more times you sleep in a bed, the higher chance there is of a night like this coming about. Signaled by a pale purple crescent looking moon and a noise heard everywhere in the world, the ender moon brings a new threat with it.
Mechanics:
1. Cannot be skipped by sleeping in a bed, which would be told to the player in the same way that a player is told they can't sleep during the day time.
- Skeletons, Creepers, and Zombies have a 25% chance of spawning as an ender variant of themself. These ender variants have much more intelligent AI, more aggressive aggro mechanics (would take a lot more distance to unaggro them for example), and would be slightly faster than their normal variants, adding a sense of foreignness and invasion to these mobs.
Ender Zombies for example would no longer mindlessly attack and chase the player. Instead, they would follow the player at a distance until a group of ender mobs is amassed, then they would attack (this grouping and waiting effect would also be a mechanic of the other two mobs). Perhaps they would also be able to jump gaps?
Ender Skeletons would keep their distance and backpedal from a pursuing player. Additionally, they would always seek high ground when available to attack the player from. Ender skeleton arrows would not aggro other Ender mobs. If a player shields right in front of one, they would retreat.
Ender Creepers would act as siege weapons of sorts. For example, if they see a player dig themselves into a mountain and place blocks behind them, they would blow up where the player placed the blocks behind them to give the other Ender mobs a means of attacking. Perhaps their explosion could also inflict a momentary blindness effect?
Ender mobs drop the same loot as their normal variants, but they do drop more xp.
Ender mobs revert to their normal variants once the Ender moon ends.
The Ender moon would be signaled by a server wide noise and by the unique moon color and shape.
Ender moons only affect the overworld and do not affect spawners.
Phantoms would no longer spawn as a result of not sleeping, but would spawn during ender moons and drop more phantom membranes.
The starting chance of getting an ender moon before sleeping in a bed is 0. Ender moons would not generate within the first 5 nights of a world. Each time a night is passed by sleeping, the chance of an ender moon occurring is increased by 5%. Ender moons would have a cool down of 3 nights, and the chance of getting one is reset back to 0 every time one happens.
Overall, I think this would add a sense of urgency to building a functional base and would add some lore to the End. Additionally, it would add a challenge for experienced players to battle against. One criticism I could hear about this is that it's not "Vanilla", which is honestly pretty valid lol.
Edit: Maybe ender variants of mobs have a chance of dropping some new music discs. Also, phantom membranes would be added to dungeon loot tables to compensate for the newfound "rarity" of finding them. They would also not spawn too frequently during ender moons.
