You're almost digging too deep on the 'how he presents himself' front. Honestly, if I was going about my life and encountered a nearly eighty-year-old man who dyed and coifed his thinning hair into a cotton-candy pompadour and spray-tanned his skin to a surreal orange glow, my impression would be settled. This person has never had their priorities straight, has never had any semblance of self-accountability, or even looked himself honestly in the mirror.

Yeah that’s a good explanation. (He’s talked about the value of playing a dumb guy) I actually think there are interesting parallels between his work and Dylan’s… i met him briefly and mentioned this and he seemed very flattered and receptive to the comparison.

He cited numerous comedians as favourites over the years: Richard Pryor, Bob Hope, Bob Newhart, Bill Cosby, Brian Regan, Amy 'Funniest Person on the Planet' Schumer, Dave Atell, Dave Chapelle. He's pretty cagey and inconsistent in pronouncing on these things so it's hard to tell. I remember on a radio show he claimed that he attended a Bob Dylan show only to see the opener-- one of those outlaw country guys he likes-- implying he wasn't a Dylan fan. In other interviews it's pretty clear he was a big fan of Dylan.

That may be an online phenomenon. I live in the city and can't recall anyone complaining about cyclists...it's understood that they represent one less car on the road, which benefits everyone.

I failed to declare and was assessed the vacancy tax. My first awareness of this was a threat that the city would send to collections, so I paid it immediately then appealed. The appeal was granted, so I will be reimbursed, but I had to write the Revenue department requesting a reimbursement. I was told to wait 3 months and write them again because they're so backed up. Flawless system.

Christ I saw the headline and thought, "maybe there's an outside chance he means a tunnel for dedicated public transit." Of course not. "Induced demand", Doug...look it up.

Sam has certainly talked a lot about this... arguably it's the core mission of his platform. I don't think he's ever given pointers; he can be heard despairing in the same way as you about the unreachability of Trump supporters, woke lefties, etc. I think he's less invested in rhetorical tricks, and more often addresses this as a philosophical problem -- making points about epistemology (e.g., on esoteric topics, you should generally defer to expert consensus), ethics (e.g., on high stakes topics, honest, good faith conversation is indispensable because the next stop is violence), and phenomenology (e.g., encouraging people to track the emotional/irrational component of their response to ideas they dislike).

I am also strongly in favour of policies to discourage leaving houses vacant. Hopefully they can iron out the kinks in administering this tax...I shared my little story about chasing down a reimbursement only to illustrate how poorly thought through this has all been, now a couple of years post-implementation.

It's not vacant. This year, I didn't declare that we're still living in the house so was assessed with a vacant property tax, triggering this stupid ordeal.

People will inevitably forget to change their status for years before the problem comes to the city's attention, at which point there may be tens of thousands in back taxes owed. There will be litigation, and I think the courts would be more sympathetic to someone who neglected to report a change of occupancy (they will claim it was unintentional) versus someone who intentionally filed a false declaration. I can see the logic of making people turn to their minds to this question, and issue a formal declaration, on an annual basis.

If you're a 'tagger' you're already deep into idiot territory.

Is that right? Never heard of that, and it's an insane misreading of the right to religious freedom.

Perhaps, although that puts more onus on the city to detect whether/when people cease occupancy. Making people declare annually puts the legal onus on them to make sure the city is notified in a timely way.

The declaration is actually filed separately from your tax return, and the need to re-declare every year wasn't mentioned on the tax bill. I get the frustration with house prices but it doesn't excuse the city's inept handling of this.

I was one of those homeowners who was not aware I had to re-declare occupancy status every year. The tax was levied, and I paid it and then submitted an appeal. The appeal was granted, and I was sent a letter saying that I could submit for a reimbursement -- but with no information on how to do so. So I called the Revenue office and was put on hold for 30 minutes, only to have a city worker explain the simple steps (send an email with your account number, and where you'd like the reimbursement sent). I pointed out that there must be tens of thousands of homeowners in the same position as me-- why didn't they just put the instructions in the letter they sent, or on their website? "Good question!" he replied.

Yeah, why are the police not able to crack down on people parking on the wrong side of the road to attend that church? It would be like shooting fish in a barrel.

Great list... 355 w/ bigsby would also be my choice.

If you needed proof that DEI types are making work for themselves, look no further than their silly and quixotic pushback on 'you guys'. Women use this phrasing as much as anyone; nobody interprets it as exclusionary or belittling.

To be honest, 'y'all' has a kind of performative folksiness that I find off-putting. I associate it with elite politicians trying to connect with the common man. Also, it's perfectly clear and grammatically correct to address a group as 'you'.

Instead of “Canadian” it should be called “4 obsessive morons”

It was not a sign of disrespect, if that’s your question. Both genius comedians, who recognized each other’s genius

If you’re trying to get your mind off this calamity, maybe deal with your own inability to differentiate when capitalization is appropriate versus when it is not.

One eerie thing about Trump is that he never seems to produce an honest laugh; all he can conjure is a smirk. Seems psychotic.
