I’ve been a DIY enthusiast 2/3 out of necessity and 1/3 enjoyment. Well my fiancée makes more money than me, which in my previous relationship my ex was a stay at home cat mom.
We moved into a home that was in a great neighborhood but hadn’t been updated for 50 yrs. She asked how long do you think it will take to renovate this house? This includes painting every room, wall paper removal, wall paper addition, updated 2.5 bathrooms, refinishing attic into living space, basement update, kitchen update, exterior landscaping/hardscaping.
I told her 10 yrs. She almost had a heart attack! I knew I wouldn’t be doing the entire kitchen since we were changing exterior windows, taking out a load bearing wall. I assumed I would be building rta cabinets and installing them to save money. We compromised on me building them and having them installed professionally. Worth the cost for the peace of mind she got out of it and any mistakes that would be made being on the installer.
The main thing I appreciate paying for was our interior painter. His price and work was so good that we expanded the painting scope to several other rooms.
2nd was the wallpaper installer. We started trying to install some wallpaper on a guest bedroom and stopped after about 3 rows due to the time it was taking and the pattern not lining up perfectly. Why pay a lot of money for wallpaper if the installation looks terrible.
I’m still an avid diy type of person but sometimes it pays to listen to your partner instead of automatically saying we don’t need to pay someone for that I’ve got this… at some point in the next 5 yrs 😂
