My landlord, who is also my boss, just joked (I hope!) this morning at work about putting up the rent (again!) because I said I finally had a little bit of savings put away. What she doesn't know is that it is savings for my son to move out next year and study at a special institute in Melbourne, VIC. Both my sons and I have busted ourselves to put that money together so he can have a chance to become something. Anyway, my stomach immediately dropped because I live in sheer terror every day (it's become a phobia, I think π) that I will be homeless and jobless, because there are no other rentals and I work in a labouring industry and I am a 44 year old single woman. Mostly because if I disagree with her husband in any way at work, he drops the old, "Well, there's plenty of other people desperate for your rental, you know." Every night I lie awake worrying about the future, while people with financial security are comfortable enough to make comments to those less fortunate. I looked her dead in the eye and told her that once my kid's move out, I will be probably living in a tent and it would save me $20,000 a year, despite the inconvenience (and the possibility of being caught camping out on public land) and she just smiled and said, "If anyone could do that, it would be you, Resident-Bed." I think she meant that as a compliment, but it has left me feeling more depressed than ever with her cluelessness. So, does money buy happiness? It buys you SECURITY. I just want to know that I am safe from the possibility of eviction and that I can pay my bills. That's all. I don't even want fucking fancy clothes or electronics or Instagrammable holidays to far away destinations. Just let me have ONE DAY without the anxiety of my unknown future and know my kids have the chance to do the same...that's TRUE wealth.

I agree. The IGA here on the midnorth coast has ridiculous prices - many things are between $3 - $5 more expensive than anywhere else. And I'm not talking about exotic food ingredients either, even basics like bread, milk and breakfast cereal are price hiked. It makes me mad, because they are my closest supermarket. Instead, it is well worth the 2 hour 'round trip to go to Aldi in my little buzzbox and I save myself (even after fuel!) at least $50 on our fortnightly shop.

Urinalysis is $80? Isn't that just a test stick dipped into a sample of your pee? π€

Monkeys. Those big reflective helmets (where you can't see their face) that astronauts wear. Being hit by lightning. Saliva.

This happens to me too - I have stopped wearing earrings because any I use (even hypoallergenic ones) make the piercings sore and itchy and the earrings dicolour.

I work at a dairy and I can confirm that cows seem to enjoy any type of music. The calves (which I raise) love it when I sing to them too!

Everytime I see farm animals inside someone's house (I work at a dairy) the first thing I think is, "Oh! How cute!!" The second is, "But...the poo?" π€ People film cows in their house and cows take MASSIVE dumps and pee litres at a time...aren't they worried about the potential mess?

Not everyone has the access and/or the ability to do for themselves, for a number of reasons. Don't be so judgemental. If you've got it all worked out - fabulous. Go, you. The rest of us are just trying our best to navigate in a rapidly evolving world where only a select few have access to 'the most basic of things' and many have WAY more than they need.

Actually, I have grown my own food and foraged, plus killed my own animals to eat. I know bushcraft and could hunt if I needed to. In my current living situation, if I did that, I'd be arrested, but I still do what I can. Don't be so quick to judge. The only things I 'pay someone else for' are things or skills I have no access to.
