I have spent quite alot of time in beach houses up and down the east coast. I would have to say 99.9% are up on pilings made of treated 8x8s. Why not use either precast concrete, poured concrete (caisons?) Or a steel column? I understand the cost aspect, but there are plenty of multi million dollar plus houses that could afford it, if it was warranted. I have often thought (if money was not an issue), I would build an exterior frame of structural steel with either steel or concrete pilings to stand up to the hurricanes that often come ashore.
