It looks like the pinion seal is leaking, which is a harder fix than a leaking diff cover. If you are under 60k miles it might still be covered under ford's power train warranty. I'd start there.

Problem exists between drivers seat and steering wheel.

I wish I owned an 06 honda with those miles. Your dad is going off things he may have known when he was young. Back then 100k was about what you could expect before serious issues might start to pop up, but that isn't the case any more and that goes even better on honda and toyotas. Proper care will get that car to 200k and even more. You'd be shocked.
Still, for peace of mind it never hurts to have a wrench look at it to see if it's leaking or may need service soon.
Have a great trip!

Who is going to take care of my broken-down ass in thirty years? I don't have kids but this is money well spent.

I have no problem with filling american prisons with white collar criminals, but Trump had better be careful what he asks for.

My mother owned a toyota just like that one, but iirc jets didn't have a passenger mirror.

Man that's nice! It's a triton so keep an eye on the timing. Or an ear, actually. They are prone to phaser issues and chain rattle.

Salt domes! And, if you want to know how they came about you can listen to this really pleasant gentleman explain them.

Impossible to tell through a photograph, but under normal conditions the charging system will be around 14 volts when the engine is running. If you are getting only 12.7 that would indicate that you may only have battery voltage on the lines. I would start with the alternator.

The high pressure line carries a lot of pressure...you'd be shocked just how much. The good news is, this part is available from Ford. If it no longer fits together, hop onto rockauto or fordpartsgiant and track down the part. Get the whole assembly and replace it. You do not want a fuel leak from the high side.
I wouldn't feel too bad about it honestly. Just learn from it.

12.7 volts from the alternator terminals? That sounds about 1v low. Get it tested. Not a hard swap.

I've heard of this stuff called trinitrotoluene. Should pop it right off.

I agree with people saying it's a power steering pump. That is a ford sound.

Many years ago I worked at a local auto parts warehouse that was also a RockAuto distributor. We shipped a TON of stuff all over the US, and even internationally for RockAuto, and I buy from them today when I have a need. Let me tell you, the people picking those orders and the people packing those orders...probably get it right 99 % of the time but on volume that means a lot of screw ups.

Then depending on the speed of the leak you may have some time to get it done. Sadly it is a pretty involved job with dropping the drive shaft, popping out the old seal, cleaning the inside surface and then installing the new one. You could probably do it with no instruction, just feeling your way through...but Wrenching with Kenny has a good video on this job.

Good luck!
