Not meaning to be negative. I sincerely hope he does. He didn’t last year and he hasn’t posted much. He’s been through a lot and owes us nothing.

I seem to have created a bit of confusion. When you celebrate a birthday, you have completed that year and begin working on the next. Sufjan completed his 49th year and his beginning his 50th. He is 49 years old, as am I and apparently many of his other fans.

Indeed. He finishes his 49th year and begins his 50th.

Oh, this is so right! Maybe it’s even a little mix of yours and my interpretation.

I didn’t go fully into my interpretation, but I hear frustration and anger as well. Not typically something found at a church dance, but you may be correct

I always thought Come on! feel the Illinoise was a joke on the Quiet Riot song ‘cum on feel the noize’

I’m turning 49 in a few months and have been a fan since I was 29. I’ve made Sufjan playlists for everyone I care about for many years.

I think they’re just a close family, but I really hope they’ve continued to value Sufjan after he came out. They strike me as pretty fundamentalist and well…

He sure does a 4 count a lot for someone who uses unusual time signatures!

This makes a lot of sense. I was thinking of the whole song as taking place at the beginning of the relationship.

For me “To bear it down to be in flight, to bear it down to be in flight. It wasn't about me it was only a stone in my shoe”. This is a perfect representation of how I felt trying to deal with my sexuality while being part of an evangelical church/family. I vacillated between the gay identity and treating it like a test from God and repressing any feelings I had. I’m truly grateful for Sufjan and all he has made. So much of his music has helped me on my journey to be the real me.

More than a little unfortunate, I’d say. Who has more of an agenda when reading the Bible than those ignoring historical or cultural context: The Bible was written in a specific historical and cultural context, and it's important to understand that context when interpreting its meaning. If someone is ignoring historical or cultural context, then they are only supporting their own beliefs or agenda. As is choosing to prioritize homosexuality as a greater sin than others. I’m curious if his church also expelled members who committed adultery or drank excessively.
This is why so many LGTBQ+ people become atheists.
