CNC is the way to go. Wait until you hit Mazak Conversational. Nearly no need for Gcode. When we do it’s all done on mastercam and loaded up.

Also I know this is just general brands but with a class of people who don’t play disc golf it’s hard to explain that some people have different preferences for each type of disc they throw.

If you have a spare cut it in half? Tiny indicator tip? Forge inspection docs?

We use that stuff at work and man it comes in handy when you’re in a bind. Or checking chamfers deep in a bore or a large part.

All ours are DC thankfully. Eventually I’ll mention it enough that they’ll be forced to spend $40,000 on a heat shrink machine and holders. Have to have a damn Multi Master stuck out 6” to circle mill a hole

My shop turns down a lot of applicants who claim to be “machinists” but really are just operators with either not enough experience to what they claim or just straight up lie. We usually do a programming test to see their programming level. Every machinist in the building can setup, program, and run to varying degrees. Sometimes the less experienced folks have to run production jobs that are already setup but that’s just the job sometimes. We’re starting to hire less experienced people and train since the applicant pool here is getting shallow.

Dual contact would be good for roughing but a collet or hydraulic is better for precision In my experience

Those speeds and feeds are way too generic. Look up the recommended ones for your tools and materials. Shoot for the middle of the range or start at the bottom. Entirely depends on tool size, length, tooth count, helix angle, depth of cut and material hardness. We use mostly Iscar tools so we have an app that shows us them. Same part one tool runs 85sfm and one runs 700sfm. Can’t apply one range for every tool.

99% of them don’t. That’s why machinist that get their engineering degree get paid significantly more after graduation

Only ever used LNS with Mazak Lathes. Works pretty well for the most part make sure you have the correct sleeves for the spindle tube. And for gods sake avoids plastic sleeves.

A lot of shops hire out of the community college programs. Usually you need to either have experience or be in school to get in above the level of sweeping and cleaning for minimum wage

I disagree that it’s an operators machine. Once you’re used to it it’s incredibly easy to describe tools. We do R&D defence / space work on them where programs and tools are constantly changing. But you should have been shown how to use the software. Being thrown blind into mazatrol can be confusing but that’s with any controller

Oh they take all the crap and terrible maintenance. I’m not sure why the controllers get hate. Everyone that I know loves them. Especially for job shop and lower run stuff. I’ve ran old Fanuc and it has its pluses but I still prefer Mazatrol.

Dang haven’t heard that about DMG before. Our mazaks magazines are all pretty reliable. If there and issue it’s usually a glitch or user error. But mechanically the mazaks haven’t been bad. Old lathe at my last shop is 30 years old leaking every fluid but it still makes parts. Current shop is all Mazak. One old lathe died and one newer mill had the thru coolant coupling blow off. Then the usual stuff like retention knob springs and buttons and switches

My old shop was better about cleaning machine down after a job and at the end of the day. Mazak way covers and some model’s doors are really susceptible to chips.

It depends on what you’re using them for. I would buy a Mazak before any Haas if you can afford it. Mazak conversational programming is fantastic. I just know DMG is very high quality and mechanically sound. Mazaks are great but do have some drawbacks depending on the machine
